HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?

New York Yankees
1. RF Andrew McCutchen
2. DH Giancarlo Stanton
3. CF Aaron Hicks
4. 3B Miguel Andujar
5. C Gary Sanchez
6. SS Gleyber Torres
7. 1B Luke Voit
8. 2B Neil Walker
9. LF Brett Gardner

Well, here's hoping Sanchez is back ... and healthy this time.

From RAB:

While Sanchez was out the Austin Romine/Kyle Higashioka catching tandem hit .201/.258/.350 in 231 plate appearances and opponents went 43-for-56 (77%) stealing bases.

Damage limited for Tanaka.

Could have been much worse.

Meanwhile FOX Sports continues to show a damned college football RAIN DELAY rather than show the Yankees game as scheduled. It's on MLB.tv, so ... ok, but seriously???

Meanwhile FOX Sports continues to show a damned college football RAIN DELAY rather than show the Yankees game as scheduled.

Welcome to FOOTBALL SEASON IN AMERICA!! Fox would rather show a football player taking a nasty dump than any other sports live-action. Being a Saturday I thought I might pay a late lunch visit to one of my local sports bars, but then I remembered: FOOTBALL!!!111!!11 so...nahhh. Pretty amazing that even the mighty, mighty Yankees get shoved aside, though.

Oh, looks like Daniel Norris is pitching a perfect game against the Yankees through 3 innings.

Had the Yankees YES broadcast via MLB Extra Innings until about 5:15 PM, when the blackout screen came on when they went to commercial before the bottom of the 5th, and never came back to the game. Football was still on FS1, and I don't think they blackout Extra Innings for them anymore, just sometimes show the Fox broadcast on Extra Innings. The only other game now in progress, Mets @ Giants, is still being shown. Cable company telephone technical support system doesn't seem to encompass contacting technician or service provider who throws the wrong switch, just hapless agent offering to refresh the cable box. By the time I'm done with them, the game is on FS1, although I missed the Torres HR. Have had similar problems on very rare occasions - once they blacked out every game - but it should never happen. Grrr.

Extra Innings now has the Yankees game again - not sure if my complaints contributed to fixing the glitch, but all is well for the moment.

[edit] Nope.

Would be nice if Betances could come through here ...

Dellin does it despite dinged digit casting doubt. 2-1 NYY.
   15. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 01, 2018 at 07:11 PM (#5737476)
Well, that's how to make 2 hits count ...
   16. Jay Seaver Posted: September 01, 2018 at 07:27 PM (#5737480)
Well, Eduardo Rodriguez looks pretty good coming off the DL. Not sure about NESN's new "Christian Vazquez's crotch" inset, though.
   17. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: September 01, 2018 at 07:38 PM (#5737482)
Should’ve gone with “despite dinged digit delivering doubt.” It was there for ya’ man.
   18. Jay Seaver Posted: September 01, 2018 at 07:39 PM (#5737483)
EdRod's first two innings: No hits, 5 strikeouts. That's not bad.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2018 at 08:09 PM (#5737490)
Poncedeleon pitched 10 1/3rd innings against the Reds without allowing a hit.... back to back doubles when he finally allows a hit to them.
   20. Jay Seaver Posted: September 01, 2018 at 08:10 PM (#5737491)
Four innings, ten strikeouts, and even more amazingly, <55 pitches, which is just not what I expect from Rodriguez at all.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2018 at 08:18 PM (#5737493)
double, double, single, double so far from Poncedeleon after allowing his first hit against the red.
   22. Jay Seaver Posted: September 01, 2018 at 08:18 PM (#5737494)
Kind of early for cycle-watch, but Jackie Bradley has the triple and the homer in his first two at-bats.

The NESN commentators are so dumb, it ain't even funny.

He'll probably screw it up by hitting a hr instead of a double.

Jesus Christ, White Sucks... just go home and die.

Bradley hit one to the wall in left for an F-7.

Rodon channeling Matt Young on that throw. Was I the only one who thought the first baseman could’ve made a better play on it?
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2018 at 09:15 PM (#5737519)
Cardinals being manhandled by the Reds...4-0 in the top of the 7th. (I think this is the second largest deficit the team has seen in about a month)
   29. phredbird Posted: September 01, 2018 at 09:18 PM (#5737521)

d@mmit, it's over, isn't it?

   30. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2018 at 09:23 PM (#5737523)
Shildt got his contract, he doesn't need to win anymore for at least two seasons.

Just kidding, although I think he makes very curious choices on his relievers, I do like his quick hook for starters, something that isn't that common in the game anymore. (we talk about bullpens etc... but a pitcher being pulled in the third is some what rare in today's game.... Shildt has no qualms about doing that...and I do like that.)
   31. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 01, 2018 at 09:24 PM (#5737524)
Potentially awkward moment for tonight's Blue Jays game against the Marlins in Miami.

The Jays are losing badly, so they might just bring in the reliever they called up from the minors.

His name?

Jose Fernandez

Austin Davis has a card in his back pocket of scouting reports on players. He’s been using it all year. Joe West came over, ask to see it, then just took it away. Kapler came out to argue, said it wasn’t in the rulebook that he couldn’t have one, but West wasn’t having any of it.

WTF does that even mean ?!
   35. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 01, 2018 at 09:43 PM (#5737531)
Two hits so far tonight for the Nationals terrific teenager Juan Soto, including a double (20) that knocks Ed Kranepool out of 10th place on the Age-19 Leaderboard. Perhaps of greater interest, Soto continues to be #1 for Age-19 in OPS (.934) & OPS+ (143, before tonight's game). I don't think folks have fully appreciated how well Soto has played this season.

Since cfb commented on JBJ he has filed out to the wall in left and the wall in center. He’s a combined 8 feet from a three home run night.

I don't think folks have fully appreciated how well Soto has played this season.

Some of us have wondered repeatedly when Deivi would ever give Juan Soto a break, since the kid has played every game since coming up to D.C. Deivi said last week that he asked Soto and the kid eagerly said he wanted to play; because you can ALWAYS trust the word of teenagers who feel they are invincible. Said he wouldn't give Soto a break until September. Says September here on my calendar.

Buck sez if Soto gets a day off at reasonable intervals he would be even more outstanding than we have yet seen. #FireDeivi

Matt Kemp launches a 3 run bomb to center and the Dodgers lead 3-2. If Jansen makes it stand up the west is even.

Untarped in DC. Nationals pick up a run, making it 3-2 Brewers, with bases now loaded for Juan Soto, bringing about the always exciting PITCHING CHANGE.

EDIT: TWO-RUN SINGLE FOR THE TERRIFIC TEENAGER! 4-3 Nationals.
   53. Bote Man the walk-off king Posted: September 02, 2018 at 12:28 AM (#5737571)
OK, maybe Juan Soto doesn't actually need a rest. Experts are covfefeing.

The Mariners are trying to stave off a devastating loss. An 8-1 lead is now 8-7 in the ninth with a man on first and no outs.

Not sure I understand the Cardinals' starting Luke Weaver today... I thought he'd been moved to the bullpen with Mikolas/Flaherty/Gant/Gomber/Poncedeleon pitchiung well, and Weaver ... not.
   60. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 02:31 PM (#5737696)
OK, four of the first five Reds' hitters have reached vs Weaver, he's thrown a wild pitch, and two runs have scored (so far).
   61. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 02:36 PM (#5737698)
Cards on the verge of getting blown out in the first inning. If they drop this one it'll be their first series loss since just after the All Star break, when they dropped two out of three to ... the Reds.
   62. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 02:37 PM (#5737700)
Wow, bases-loaded GIDP to escape the inning with just two runs scoring. That was huge.

   64. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 03:00 PM (#5737712)
Weaver loads the bases again in the second inning. He's walked 5 in an inning and two-thirds.

I hope the relievers are ready.
   65. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 03:01 PM (#5737713)
Amazingly the Reds have 8 baserunners in two innings and just 2 runs scored.

BREAKING NEWS: Grain Beetles Halt Padres Beach Hat Giveaway:
The San Diego Padres halted distribution of beach hats as a giveaway on Saturday after experts found what they believed to be grain beetles in some of the packaging containing the items. The Padres said in a statement that they were advised that the grain beetles "pose no health risks to humans, but we decided to act out of an abundance of caution."
. . .
It was not immediately clear how the beetles were discovered. Fans who received the hats before Saturday night's game against the Colorado Rockies were asked to exchange them for vouchers.

Grain beetles are microscopic insects known to infest stored dry goods.

Looks like that hat would throw a lot of shade, from the photo at the link, although the grain beetles may affect some sensitive types appreciation of said chapeau.
   69. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:05 PM (#5737746)
Bader with a two out infield single to tie the game up. I know he's not going to win or come in second for Roy, but it's looking like he has a real shot at third place.
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:08 PM (#5737748)
Bader did something I haven't seen before, it didn't work out, but it was a heads up play.

3-3 score, bases loaded 2 outs, Bader on first base, a ground ball to the second baseman, who decides he's going to go for the force at second.... Tosses it to the shortstop who is covering, instead of sliding, Bader runs through the bag and keeps running. The throw, just barely beat him, but if he would have been 1/16th second faster he would have been safe at second and the go ahead run would have counted.
   71. Lassus Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:15 PM (#5737750)
These Mets/Giants games have been pretty fun baseball.
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:19 PM (#5737752)
Pena with a near perfect bunt for a single... bases loaded no outs bottom of the ninth..... Cardinals looking for their 11th walk off win of the season, and I believe 11th consecutive series victory?
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:20 PM (#5737753)
Jose Martinez is up to bat, the Reds have two outfielders it looks like. (Yep, right fielder is playing mid shortstop)

Professional hitter strikes out, been struggling today with 4 strikeouts.
   75. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:22 PM (#5737755)
Probably the worst AB of the season for Martinez... Needing to make contact, he swung at 5 pitches out of the zone, the last one in the dirt, with the bases loaded.
   76. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:23 PM (#5737756)
Cardinals fail to score in a bases loaded no outs situation, while playing for one run.
   77. salvomania Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:25 PM (#5737757)
Pretty sad inning for the Cardinals: load the bases with nobody out in a 3-3 game in the bottom of the ninth, and Martinez gets himself out, Ozuna hits a weak tapper on the first pitch, and DeJong pops out.
   78. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:33 PM (#5737759)
Bud Norris coughed that up...5-3 Reds.
   79. cardsfanboy Posted: September 02, 2018 at 05:35 PM (#5737761)

1-1 in the seventh.

was out in the world today and heard that big spot in the Yankees-Tigers game on the car radio.

Tigers lead, 8-5, bases loaded, 2 outs in the 8th for the Yankees. PH Greg Bird swings. Octagenarian Yankees radio man John Sterling launches into his HR call triumphantly: "IT IS HIIIGH, IT IS FAAAAR, IT IS.... caught at the wall."

Sterling later admits that the ball would have hit the wall if it hadn't been caught. no RR-robbing catch here.

I'm all for not discriminating against old or blind people, but it seems like vision would be a useful tool in a radio play-by-play guy's toolbox.

Happy Shohei Ohtani Day, everyone.
So, yes, some people knew.

Ohtani's fastball is anywhere from 92-98 tonight, and he's throwing a whole lot more of his curve and slider than he did early on. I wonder if that's part of the plan to mix it up, but that lower velo is definitely something to keep an eye on.

That homer was definitely not part of the gameplan. Two-strike breaking ball.

TRVIA for today:
Which MLB has the highest net BABIP advantage in 2018 to date? It's about +.039; offense BABIP much better then defense-allowed BABIP, about 125 hits' worth, going into the weekend.

With a 40-pitch first inning, Eovaldi does not seem to be doing much to help save the bullpen after yesterday's game. Good thing it's September and roster limitations don't really matter, I guess.

That lower pitch speed is likely what keeps him on the mound.

How does one find league-wide situational splits on B-R?

Go to a league summary, say 2018 AL. Run the cursor on Batting on the "2018 AL bar", and in the drop down you will see "league splits" in the first column.

Guess the Cubs will need to score more than a run today.
