Cutch creates a run!

Bryce Harper 2-run HR in bottom of 9th ties game 3-3. Cardinals had walked him 3 times today.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?

Possible rainout, since it has been pouring in Texas all day long and there's more rain in the forecast tonight. But given MLB's detestation of rainouts and doubleheaders, I would imagine they will wait as long as it soggily takes and get the game in.

If I hear that ####### Guinness Blonde commercial twice in a row one more ####### time on Red Sox broadcasts I'm going to ####### lose it.

Edit: sorry, had to get that out. Carry on.
   105. salvomania Posted: September 03, 2018 at 04:24 PM (#5737984)
Incredibly, the second day in a row the Cardinals fail to capitalize on a late-inning bases-loaded, no-out scenario, beginning with Jose Martinez (GIDP today after swinging at five pitches outside the zone yesterday) and then follow it up by having Bud Norris allow multiple runs (three in the 10th yesterday, two so far in the 9th today) to blow the game.
   106. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 03, 2018 at 04:31 PM (#5737985)
This game might get ugly fast ...

Rizzo gives the cubs a 3-2 lead in the 8th.

And it's not going well.

Somehow only giving up *3* runs in that inning seems a small victory ...

A VOIT VOLT!!!

3-3!

Big boy. And that was no meatball.

Cardinals' defense again once again unprepared in an obvious sac situation.

Cardinals' magical run coming to an end against the sub-.500 contingent...

Love Ken Singleton, glad he's coming back next year.

Stupid Maddon. Taking it out on the ump because Edwards can't throw a strike. None of those pitches Maddon was ######## about were particularly close.
   116. Meatwad Posted: September 03, 2018 at 04:57 PM (#5737998)
Carl didnt seem to have it. Not sure why he was left in.
   117. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 03, 2018 at 04:58 PM (#5738000)
Harper homers in the 9th, sac fly in the 10th. Pretty good guy to have.
   118. Man o' Schwar Posted: September 03, 2018 at 04:59 PM (#5738001)
You have to pull Edwards after he walks Braun. No way that was ending in anything other than another walk.
   119. perros Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:02 PM (#5738002)
Don't make the first out at third, Matt.
   120. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:02 PM (#5738003)
Running onto the field DURING the at-bat was particularly stupid.

Exactly. Guy totally lost his composure after the walk. I've never even seen Edwards emote much, good or bad.

Why does gore have batting gloves in his hands
   123. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:11 PM (#5738009)
It would be nice if CC would stop giving up runs ... This would be a good inning to begin.

[edit] Doesn't look like it ... but AJ Cole is not the answer.

[edit2] Damn, well done!

Not gonna be extras today.

Absolutely pathetic

Not a hit in the inning
   127. Meatwad Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:21 PM (#5738014)
Well the hbp does set up the double play at least.

Let's review. The last 7 batters Cubs pitchers have faced have been walk, walk, groundout, walk, HBP, strikeout, HBP.

Fitting end I guess. What a meltdown those last two innings.
   133. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:29 PM (#5738021)
He might have actually gotten him if he'd gathered to make the throw and stepped on the bag as one coordinated motion. Instead he stepped on the bag, patted the glove, wound and threw.
   134. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:35 PM (#5738025)
That's a tough play regardless, going 3 to 1 to get a fast runner. I'm pretty sure he at least had the force at home.
   135. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: September 03, 2018 at 05:55 PM (#5738028)
but AJ Cole is not the answer.

Like I stated ...

That was indeed, kind of dis-gust-ing.

But , I am kind of an Athletics fan this series. I want the A's to win the DIV.
And the Yanks to beat the Mariners in the Wildcard.

Anyone with me on THAT ?

   141. TomH Posted: September 03, 2018 at 07:00 PM (#5738041)
so, if the Mariners take the WC and the A's take the West, HOU goes home? I'll give 100-1 on THAT, baby!

I knew , something like that was coming, and I deserve it.
Do it , BASEBALL GODS !

just caught the replay of Joe Maddon getting tossed out not only for arguing balls and strikes, but for arguing against a clearly inside pitch being called a ball.

watching pratfalls by arrogant people never gets old.

acolytes will claim he's playing 4th-dimensional chess
:)

Peter Alonso hit a walk-off, two-run homer in his final at-bat of the season (and the Las Vegas 51s' final at-bat as a Mets affiliate, and at Cashman Field.)

Alonso's season ends with a .285 average, 36 home runs and 119 RBI. His next stop is the Arizona Fall League.

Grounds out to 1B.

Hmm, good idea to watch Rays@BJ's ?

Billy Ripken interesting on the MLB Network.

showed a botched pickoff by Cubs today, and another recent one as well. in both cases, the 2B-SS were not in sync as to being prepared for the throw - because the shift left them out of position.

that seems like a universal opportunity for teams whenever there is still a shift, even with a runner on first. I'd be amused if these things were so well exploited that teams gave up on the shift altogether - at least when there is a baserunner.

Have you ever played baseball above like little league level ?

The worst thing about the whole Sabermetrics stuff is : any lunatic can post his or her opinion on how BASEBALL works.
Even though, never having played a single inning of it. That makes me sad. It is such a great game, even without the STATS crap.
   151. Howie Menckel Posted: September 03, 2018 at 08:24 PM (#5738064)
Justin Turner was 0 for 16 career against deGrom in the regular season - but 5 for 6 against him in the postseason, with 3 doubles.

Turner just blasted a long HR. two batters into the game, and deGrom knows that down 1-0, the best the 8-8 hurler can do is try to battle his way into a no-decision.

Now what? The Nationals no longer have a AAA affiliate. Do they do the "everybody move one team to the left" dance?

last time the Mets beat the Dodgers was David Wright's last game in MLB. (until this month, maybe. it's complicated)

deGrom with his 12th 2-hit game - most in MLB since he debuted - and he knocks in the tying run

many are appalled by his multi-tasking, and wish to end it.
Scherzer also annoys them.

total coincidence that both are superstar pitchers - as are Kershaw and Bumgarner - who can extend their edge, as long as they get to bat against inferior pitchers.

Dodgers baseball in September is unwatchable. Roberts uses three pitchers to get through the sixth.

LOS ANGELES -- Jose Reyes leaned forward in his chair in the visitor's clubhouse at Dodger Stadium, shaking his head as he acknowledged a truth he'd rather not admit.

"I know I'm not going to be here next year," Reyes said Monday. "So, for me, it's taking every opportunity and trying to enjoy the game, because I don't even know if I'm going to be playing baseball next year. I just need to enjoy this month of the season around my teammates, because I don't know what the future holds for me."

OPS+ in 2018 is 69
age 35, can't really field any position adequately

career year was with the Mets, but it was in 2011

I don't want to be the one who tells him that it's time - but someone will have to do so

From Mike Axisa's game recap over at RAB:

Boone Strikes Again: What impossibly stupid bullpen management. There are eleven guys in the bullpen, the Yankees were down one run with a runner on second and one out in the fourth inning of an important game, so of course Aaron Boone goes to A.J. Cole to face the middle of the order. Cole allowed the inherited runner to score (of course) and then gave up a home run (of course) in the fifth to turn a one-run deficit to a three-run deficit. Brian Cashman has to take Cole away from Boone like he took Scott Proctor away from Joe Torre back in the day. Boone keeps bringing Cole into winnable games and they become unwinnable games. And because that’s not bad enough, Chad Green entered the game with the Yanks down three in the sixth. Why not use Green in the fourth? I didn’t think “use your good relievers in important situations in important games” is something a front office would have to explain to a manager, but here we are.

Gotta love the Scott Proctor reference ... and he's right.

Boone-y might be great with the kids, but he's an absolute idiot in the dugout.

deGrom knows that down 1-0, the best the 8-8 hurler can do is try to battle his way into a no-decision.

and he succeeded. 1 ER, 6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K - and he battled to the no-decision.

deGrom is making the old-timers "but he pitched to the score!" hang their heads in shame (or do they)
