Weiner says health has declined from brain tumor, baseball union will appoint deputy

Speaking Tuesday to the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, Weiner said a No. 2 will be appointed “within a week or two.”

He also said former union head Donald Fehr and No. 2 Gene Orza will not return to the union.

Does it make me a bad person to use an article about a guy's brain tumor just to illustrate bad copy editing to my students (i.e., "gravely")?

Michael Weiner's commitment to his job is remarkable.

Sigh. I feel for the family and how they have to deal with the death sentence that he is experiencing.

And from a baseball perspective, it is difficult. We had finally moved past the nasty labor-management relationship due to co-operative efforts of Rob Manfred and Weiner in the past few years. I worry that the Selig offensive goes beyond his own rehabilitation and into pushing the union when they appear weak.
