Weisman: Where are the Matt Kemp doubters tonight?

The Ghost of Matt Kemp…no more. He looks lively!

The tweets and comments you would see ridiculing Matt Kemp over the past year and a half were predictable, given the wave of negativity that can flourish online, but still plenty vexing.

Kemp would get torched for not being productive enough, regardless of how healthy he was. He would get torched for struggling to stay healthy at all.

His track record, seemingly, was worth nothing. The “What have you done for me lately?” gang never had it so good.

Tonight’s two home runs, two rousingly authoritative home runs in the Dodgers’ 6-2 romp over the Giants (recapped by Earl Bloom for MLB.com) don’t ensure that Kemp will regain his near-MVP form over the long haul. But it does put a spotlight on how silly it was for anyone to give up on him.

...Maybe Kemp doesn’t want to sit on the bench. Maybe he doesn’t express that feeling well 100 percent of the time. Should that, or the injuries, have meant that he should be tossed aside like garbage?

Kemp had earned some rope, some patience, some faith, more than some people were willing to give him.

It was just one game of two homers tonight. It was just one series with 10 total bases, a walk and a 1.242 OPS. No one knows how many games he will play this year. But I bet more than a few people who doubted him are thinking twice now.

Boy, the tone in this article here seems negative and a bit over the top (not that this has to do with Kemp, but I do not consider 6-2 to be a "romp"). Kemp had a very good game; he is a good player.

It does strike me as funny that paragraph 1 talks about the past "year and a half)", while the 3rd paragraph critiques the "what have you done for me lately" crowd. At what point does a lack of productivity drop from the "what have you done for me lately" to his "track record"? That seems a fair question, as we just flogged people over the head with Kemp's very good series vs. the Giants (and I guess ignored the past year and a half, as not track record).

I guess I don't follow enough Dodger fans on Twitter (mostly because I don't use Twitter) but I thought the knock on Kemp the last year and a half was that he couldn't stay healthy. Having one great night doesn't really change that.

bfan,

The problem is that there were many folks in the Dodger corners of the web that were a bit nasty when it came to Kemp last year. Folks booed him at Dodger Stadium when he struggled after returning from his shoulder injury. Weisman has a far different role now (employed by the Dodgers) than he did last year, but there were quite a few commenters at his old website that weren't exactly forgiving in regards to Kemp. I think this post is kind of a response to that kind of stuff. A guy last year created a "Don't Boo Matt Kemp" twitter account just to remind folks that it wasn't an effort thing with him, it was more of a recovery thing.

* To be fair, Matt Kemp is by far my favorite Dodger (Kersh is right up there, as well).

Wasn't the "complaint" that Kemp was more interested in dating rap stars than committing to the 'Dodger way?'

Well I'm a Kemp fan, but any "where are the doubters now?" article based on one good game is just waiting for a Tuff Rhodes opening day reference.

And now all the Matt Kemp doubter doubters come out of the woodwork.

I wouldn't call Rihanna a rap star? But I can't think of anything that would be more appropriate for the LA way, than dating stars.

The headline is much funnier if you read it in an Edward G. Robinson voice.

Wasn't sure which starlet he was dating. Replace rap with R&B.

Weisman has a long history of defending struggling players. He stood up for Broxton when he was getting pounded night after night.

It's the time of year for it, anyway.

That Rihanna stuff is kind of old news. Like 2010 old news.

As a regular reader of Dodger Thoughts, Weisman defended Broxton when he was throwing up 154 ERA+ seasons and his commenters expected Broxton to be Gagne like.

I used to read Dodger Thoughts when I lived in Vegas and watched a lot of Dodger games. That was a good blog community, and a pretty early one. What happened?

Interesting fact about the Dodgers; no one outside of southern California actually follows them with any degree of fidelity.

I do have a friend in Little Rock who's a big Dodgers fan. I'm assuming he was dropped on his head as a child.

Weisman got hired by the LA Times and the Toaster fell apart. Then Weisman left the LA Times for ESPN. After his contract wasn't renewed by ESPN, he brought back Dodger Thoughts as its own site. And now he's blogging for MLB.

Actually, Weisman actually works for the Dodgers these days and isn't a Gurnick MLB type. The rest of your timeline is correct. If you google him, his official title is "Director of Digital and Print Content for the Los Angeles Dodgers"

I guess you're right. The blog he posts on is associated with mlb.com, though.

They almost all moved over to true blue LA which got absorbed by SB Nation a couple years ago..

hmmph... Fernando Tatis sees your Matt Kemp game and raises you April 23, 1999. One game does not a career make.
