HOW WILL THE YANKEES LOSE TODAY?

HOW WILL THE METS EFF UP SOMETHING FUNDAMENTAL THIS AFTERNOON?

Economical 1st inning for Zack Wheeler. 14 pitches, 2 Ks, touching 99 on the gun.

Amed Rosario! Who needs defense?
   5. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:21 PM (#5849044)
Dominic Smith! Steven Vogt's glove isn't getting broken in today...
   6. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:22 PM (#5849047)
Shaun Anderson allowed just two homers over his first four starts, now allows two to the first two batters.
   7. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:23 PM (#5849050)
Is Dominic Smith now good? How come he's only started 10 games?

Because Pete Alonso already has 20 HR & Smith isn't really an outfielder.
   9. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:30 PM (#5849056)
HR, HR, walk, single, 6 batters faced, all good for...2 runs.

#letdown

Can the Mets shove Conforto into CF so Smith can play a corner, a la Jose Martinez in StL?
   11. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:32 PM (#5849060)

They need to work on their sequencing. Very inefficient having the first two batters homer.

1-2-3 2nd for Wheeler. 21 pitches over 2 innings.

That's good.

They've had him play LF a couple of times this year and it is ugly. In fact, he's playing LF today.

There goes the perfect game...

Dom Smith beats the shift.
   17. JJ1986 Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:56 PM (#5849080)
If Dominic Smith can easily bunt for a hit against the shift, then there are a lot of other guys who can do it and should be doing it more.

You don't want to be clogging up the bases.
   19. Bote Man Posted: June 06, 2019 at 12:59 PM (#5849084)
I admit that I'm a bit out of touch, but why do I check to see what games start at 1:05PM only to find 2 games underway already in the 3rd inning?? Is it the Boston Marathon all over the country today or wha??
   20. PreservedFish Posted: June 06, 2019 at 01:00 PM (#5849085)
I don't think I'm buying the new Dom Smith yet, but it's fun to watch.
   21. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 01:02 PM (#5849086)
And there goes the no-hitter. #NotTodayBoss
   22. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 01:08 PM (#5849092)
And just like that, we're tied.

I knew that 1st inning was gonna bite 'em.
   23. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 01:12 PM (#5849094)
Wheeler's command of his breaking pitches seems to have deserted him.
   24. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:00 PM (#5849130)
Giants are up 3-2 in the 7th and so far they have no AB with a runner in scoring position...
   25. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:22 PM (#5849135)
Maybe I'm missing something here, but once Lagares and Nido got on and Mickey pulled McNeil from the on deck circle, why did he burn Carlos Gomez to bunt? Why not just send Wheeler up to do that? Now, you're a man down on an already-short bench.

And he ended up using McNeil for Rosario anyway.

I don't get it.
   26. JJ1986 Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:34 PM (#5849137)
Man, the ball is so juiced.
   27. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:35 PM (#5849138)
Todd Frazier! A clutch homer! (Those words haven't been strung together since late 2017.)
   28. Banta Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:46 PM (#5849140)
I'd like to compliment McNeil but when I started to buy in before, he got hurt. I'm better off doubting him and then he can lead the league in batting average.
   29. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:47 PM (#5849141)
Safe to say Mr. Melancon ain't got it today...
   30. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:49 PM (#5849142)
Familia in with a 4 run lead. What could possibly go wrong...?
   31. The usual palaver and twaddle (Met Fan Charlie) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:55 PM (#5849143)
Put it in the books!

A surprising, satisfying win on a Thursday afternoon.
   32. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 06, 2019 at 02:57 PM (#5849144)
The Cardinals voices are really making the hard sell for the Pujols visit in mid-June.
   33. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:01 PM (#5849146)
Rockies rookie pitcher Peter Lambert made his major league debut today - and singled in his first-ever major league at-bat! He's not completely useless with the bat, having gone 4 for 13 at Albuquerque.
   34. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:03 PM (#5849147)
Cardinals have 1st and 3rd, nobody out.

Wong, ahead in the count 2-and-1, swings at three straight pitches out of the strike zone, one out.
Wieters sees three pitches out of the strike zone, swings at all three, two out.
The pitcher then takes the best AB of the sequence, working an 8-pitch AB at the end of which he, too, strikes out, but at least he swung at three pitches in the strike zone.
   35. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:30 PM (#5849153)
Can't watch, so just following on GameDay, but the Cubs aren't making this Rockies SP making his ML debut work very hard - only 48 pitches through 4 and only 2 hits (0BBs).
   36. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:31 PM (#5849154)
Terrible ballplayer Ian Desmond, trying to save his roster spot while Charlie Blackmon is on the IL, doubles home David Dahl to put the Rockies up 2-0 in the fourth.
   37. rconn23 Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:33 PM (#5849155)
The Royals are just so, so bad. Just terrible approaches almost every at bat.
   38. salvomania Posted: June 06, 2019 at 03:37 PM (#5849156)
Let's see, after retiring Votto, Andrew Miller being left in to face Suarez with 2 on and the game on the line...

Let's check those splits:
vs LHB: .670 OPS allowed
vs RHB: 1.002 OPS allowed

What could possibly go wrong?

EDIT: Never mind, Schildt is bringing in Gant. I approve.
   39. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:11 PM (#5849165)
Not watching, but I'll assume Reynolds' double was maybe something that got lost in the sun/should've been caught, since Desmond didn't score from second on the play?
   40. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:12 PM (#5849166)
Ian Desmond just failed to score from second on a double. Would anyone care to explain this to those of us watching on GameDay?

Was a popup to short right that Bryant lost in the sun.
   42. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:14 PM (#5849170)
Bud Black is letting Peter Lambert, making his first major league start, bat with two outs and a man on third in the top of the 7th. There is a 99 percent chance that he will end up pulling Lambert in the bottom of the 7th.
   43. Brian C Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:16 PM (#5849171)
Oh dear god, they're making us listen to Jeff Garlin for another half-inning. This is torture.
   44. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:20 PM (#5849173)
Cubs being hopeless against a guy making his MLB takes me back to the mid-to-late '00s when it seemed like every schlub making his MLB debut would silence the Cubs over five to seven innings.
   45. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:22 PM (#5849175)
Wow, Lambert strikes out the side in the bottom of the 7th. Very happy to have been wrong.
   46. Davo (Love Won The Battle Of Stalingrad) Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:23 PM (#5849176)
The 1989 Padres: 9 hit by pitches in 6120 PAs.
2019 Tim Locastro: 10 hit by pitches in 67 PAs.

I don't know if you vastly over-estimated the odds of Black pulling him or if we just saw a rare 1% occurrence.

So, Tom, is Lambert a legit prospect such that the Cubs' performance today shouldn't be a huge surprise/disappointment? Or is this just one of those cases where a guy fluked out in his MLB debut taking advantage of a bunch of hitters who have no scouting report on him?
   48. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:26 PM (#5849178)
I'm not sure how good Lambert actually is. He had a 5.07 ERA at AAA this year, but that's at Albuquerque; the team's ERA is 6.47.
   49. Kiko Sakata Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:31 PM (#5849183)
Thanks, Tom. A team ERA of 6.47? Man that has to make it hard to judge your prospects (assuming that 6.47 is mostly park effect that would be true of both hitters and pitchers). Although, I guess it's good for the Rockies to get their prospects comfortable with playing in a great hitting environment.
   50. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:34 PM (#5849186)
The Isotopes have a starter named Pat Dean who has allowed 15 homers in 25 innings.
   51. Mike Webber Posted: June 06, 2019 at 04:43 PM (#5849195)
The PCL this year has a League ERA of 5.24 with San Antonio leading the league at 3.45 and Reno trailing at 7.01!

16 teams
Under 3.50 - 1 team
3.50 to 4.20 - 2 teams
4.59 to 5.00 - 4
5.00 to 5.70 - 5
6.08 to 7.01 - 4

Either way that was a meek offensive showing that looked a lot more like last week than the last few days.

PCL hitter-friendly parks plus MLB juiced baseball equals fandemonium!
   54. Master of the Horse Posted: June 06, 2019 at 05:18 PM (#5849211)
Moose with two more dingers today. That dude is having a crazy good season. And the projections had him getting a big boost from Miller but even after today his homers home and away are same. And his OPS is almost the same. So just really ####### good by this guy
   55. puck Posted: June 06, 2019 at 06:01 PM (#5849221)
Wow, Lambert strikes out the side in the bottom of the 7th. Very happy to have been wrong.

That move seems to be a Bud Black specialty though.

Lambert seems like a decent prospect...but he didn't have high K rates in the minors (7.5/9 career). Would not have pegged him for 9K's in his debut.

Speaking of Brewers and splits:

Christopher Kamka @ckamka 55m55 minutes ago

Christian Yelich since 2018 All-Star break

Road: 63 games, .312/.412/.591, 15 HR 48 RBI
Home: 58 games, .395/,482/.943, 33 HR 70 RBI

The outlier here is the last week/today, not the last few days.

This Astros @ Mariners game is crazy. I hopped in the car to grab some dinner it was tied 6-6 in the 10th. I came back to the car, the Astros had gone up 7-6. Then the Mariners tied it back up 7-7 in the bottom of the 10th. Now in the 14th the Astros have gone up 8-7 and the Mariners have runners at 2B and 1B with 2 outs, Devenski facing Narvaez. Let's watch what happens...

Narváez walks. Bases loaded.

Long works the count to 3-1, but pops up a strike pitch to send his team to the wood shed.

Padres starter Joey Lucchesi at 64 pitches after 2 innings, down 4-0 to the resurgent Washington Nationals. Probably won’t finish the game.

Quick Chadwick Ratio updates for the Oakland Athletics:

1. three hits last night meant Jurickson Profar started tonight's game above the Mendoza Line for the first time since May 21, and for just the eighth time this season.

2. with his second-inning single, Khris Davis is hitting exactly .247, so all is right in the world.

Padres score 5 to take a 5-4 lead in the 5th, one out.

lazy fly to CF ball drifting toward 3B side, Machado tags to go to third. then he inexplicably slows up right before the base, then awkwardly overruns it to be the third out.

the 'book' on him is boring by now, but......
