What the heck is The Eck talking about? |

Red Sox broadcast need more Eck.

Ecksplanation: An important home run, but not a grand slam.

Proper use in a sentence: “Ortiz has to be the Red Sox’ all-time leader in Johnsons.’’

Don't think I've ever heard Eckersley but if this is any indication he seems like a douche.

If I were doing the headline, it would read, "What the Eck is 'e Talkin' About"

I'm great fun at parties.

The very opposite, as far as I can tell - as they say in the article, this is pretty spontaneous, and it tends to be O'Brien who underlines it (Orsillo did at first, but eventually he just let Eck be Eck). He can be blunt, but for an old jock who made the Hall of Fame, he tends to come off as delighted by how great this generation of players is, a guy who has stayed a fan rather than become a curmudgeon. Heck, he makes a three-person booth work, because he seems to love talking baseball with other former players.

The only downside is the terrible disappointment when he does one series and then Steve Lyons does the next one.

Agree with Jay that Eck is a joy to listen to. He's very into the game, is a homer in just about the right amount. His expressions do not feel like they are forced.

I still remember back in 2003, Eck did a Sox game against the Brewers. Milwaukee had Glendon Rusch starting in the middle of a terrible year when the Sox offense was tremendous. After a couple innings, the Sox were teeing off on him and Eck said(barely paraphrasing) "They're gonna kill this guy. He's got nothin."

It was exactly what every viewer was thinking but no other announcer would have said it.

I like Eck but sometimes he can be a bit much. I like him in small bursts, a series here, a series there. Of course as Jay notes when Lyons is the other option it all goes to hell, he’s terrible.

Eck would be perfect for a national job. He loves the modern game and his criticisms seem reasoned rather than old man shouts at cloud type stuff.

Rough - I remember that too. He absolutely destroyed Rusch, it was hysterical.

One other thing Jay said is his ability to make a three person booth work. He’s always good but can take it to another level sometimes. The Sox have had him with Pedro a couple of times and it is fantastic stuff. Last year he and Remy did a game together where they started talking about going to Studio 54 in their playing days and you could visualize the NESN producer with his finger on the mute button.

Lastly, if it’s on YouTube somewhere try and find the conversation NESN had with Eck and Kirk Gibson talking about that game.It was a great great conversation.

You're not wrong Jose . . . great clip.
"We're connected. We're connected forever."
Nice stuff.

I didn't realize Eck invented "bridge" and "Johnson". I love the guy (he is the exact opposite of a douche, think "smart excited goofball") but did we really need 2 new terms for hitting a homer?

I am pretty sure "pair of shoes" is specifically a strikeout looking, and the batter is more or less frozen.

Watched Gumby's clip just now. 6.5 minutes well spent.
