Yankees vs. Jimmy Yacabonis. Please offense, do your job.

Yacabonis

THIS IS A MADE-UP NAME!!

If you experience yacabonis for more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention ...

I'm going to miss Kenny when he's gone after this season.

And made up name guy who is objectively terrible retires the Yankees on 11 pitches.

Thank you Aaron, for picking up that bullshit.

And now Sir Didi!!!
   13. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 09, 2018 at 04:48 PM (#5707301)
Judge RBI single salvages what should have been bigger inning but for bad base-running, takes 2nd on missed cut-off man throw, then scores on Didi single. MLB not the same since they stopped public floggings for missing the cut-off man.

Sabathia's been squawking all day about getting squeezed by the ump, but every time they've shown the replay the umpire's gotten in right. Nice to see an umpire that calls the real strike zone and not the "personalized" one.
   20. Howie Menckel Posted: July 09, 2018 at 06:09 PM (#5707331)
the Phillies just clinched the NL East - after I just heard them say that 15 of their 75 remaining games (including 2 today) are against the 1962, er, 2018 Mets.
   21. Loren F. Posted: July 09, 2018 at 06:33 PM (#5707339)
I'd like to propose a new strategy for the Yankees: Severino every fifth day, and all other games pieced together by relievers. Sabathia becomes a crafty long reliever. Frazier becomes a slugging reliever! Walker becomes a... well, a reliever! Everyone is a reliever! And Gray is DFA'd.
   22. Bote Man Posted: July 09, 2018 at 06:36 PM (#5707341)
"A.J. Cole replaces Jonathan Holder"

Well, you can kiss this game goodbye, Yanks fans!
   23. Loren F. Posted: July 09, 2018 at 07:15 PM (#5707351)
Left a clearly gassed Sabathia in one batter too long. Didn't pinch hit Gardy to deliver the tying sac fly instead of strikeout-prone and less-experienced Higgy. Maybe the O's would have won it anyway, but count this another game where Boone's "managing" seemed underwhelming.

No matter the opponent, those road wins are hard to come by...really glad Boston already has 34 of those in the bag.

Red Sox already up 2-0 on new guy Pearce's HR. So far that's turned out to be a great little trade for the Sox.
   26. Howie Menckel Posted: July 09, 2018 at 07:40 PM (#5707358)
Mets-Phillies 3-3, bottom 10th, PH Flores leading off.
he already has 3 of the Mets' (feeble) 4 walkoff RBI this season and of course has a few rather famous finishes.

2-1 pitch, he says - and I think genuinely believes - that the pitch nicked his sleeve. lengthy review (sigh) finds no evidence of it.

next pitch is 3-1 - and Flores bonks it off the LF foul pole for now the most career walkoff RBI in Mets history.

career 99 OPS+ (wait, maybe 100 now), and gamely fakes his fielding way across the INF.
but if Wilmer wants to be Queens Borough President someday, he might run unopposed.
   27. Howie Menckel Posted: July 09, 2018 at 07:44 PM (#5707359)
stat on screen shows Nationals SPs with a 2-16 record and a 6.60 ERA in their last 28 starts.

that seems... suboptimal.

amazing that:
- they are 9-19 in those games
- Max Scherzer pitches for them
   28. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 09, 2018 at 07:47 PM (#5707361)

As if Scherzer was someone special. He has two weird different colored eyes... and a nasty knuckleball. Given.
But he is also very human and in his heart, deep down, a Yankees and Giants fan.

Max Scherzer ! -hearts-

Ok, so the Yanks lost to the O's. I call the Red Sucks lose to the Rangers in 11 innings.

The O's have a chance to salvage some respect by taking 2 from NY, that would be nice.

Not sure who Andy would be supporting in that game? NY so they can keep close to Boston or the O's so they can maintain some dignity and to be rightly call a MLB team.

Andy, you around? Just curious about this....

Kevin McReynolds 8

He is not on the NL ASG roster.

Too bad Betts is part of that heap of losers. He should be a Yankee, not Machado.

per 37, the Mets announcer just said "they should launch a criminal investigation" if Aguilar - one of the 5 finalists for the final spot - doesn't win the fan vote.

Ken Rosenthal reporting that the Yankees are showing "increased interest" in Manny Machado.
always good to hear a ballclub is trying to stay competitive.

Saw the Phils-Mets game, and once again disgusted with dunce Kapler.

Pinch hitting Valentin instead of Cozens with the bases loaded and 1 out, needing a fly ball to take the lead.

Buntin with men on 1st & 2nd and nobody out, right after the guy on first beat out a sacrifice attempt. Luckily he didn't bunt into a double play, but cam close.
   43. Walt Davis Posted: July 09, 2018 at 08:44 PM (#5707389)
He is not on the NL ASG roster.

The HR lead is impressive (and I hadn't realized) but he's started just 62 of Milwaukee's 91 games. He became the pretty much full-time starter when Thames got hurt and Braun didn't seem too adept at 1B. Now the Brewers are frequently playing Thames in the OF ... that can't be good.

They need to get rid of the player's ballot or at least cut it back substantially. For a guy like Aguilar -- I'm not sure he was even on the ballot which basically means he wasn't eligible to be named a starter by the fans or a backup by the players. And having been a half-time player to this point, it's not likely the players would have been giving him a lot of votes anyway. By the time the fan and player ballots are taken into consideration, there are only a few spots left to name and those often need to be used on sole team reps. I can't recall what problem the players' ballot was supposed to solve but I'm pretty sure that nearly every snub over the last dozen years or so is due to that silly system. (I suspect that an easy fix is that the players only get a "selection" when their starter choice is different than the fans.)

Aguilar since the end of May: 320/371/767 with a HR about every 9 PA, as many HR as singles (13). Also a 30% K rate. Hitting 471/1129 on-contact. I predict a regression in the second half! :-)
   44. Bote Man Posted: July 09, 2018 at 08:46 PM (#5707390)
Juan Soto came to the plate for the 3rd time with his batting average drooping to a lowly .298 for the first time.

He solved that problem by smacking a solo shot into the mezzanine deck, BA back up to .303 where it belongs.
   45. rconn23 Posted: July 09, 2018 at 08:54 PM (#5707395)
I mean, why shouldn't the Yankees try for Machado.? There is no viable top flight pitching option. Happ? Hamels? No, thanks. The offense stinks right now and needs another bat. And Moose Tacos is not the answer. They don't need another sell out for power, low OBP guy in the lineup.

Primey for the best question of the day. The Yanks are 16-6 against the Red Sox/Astros/Mariners/Indians and 4-6 against the Orioles and the Rangers.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The O's have a chance to salvage some respect by taking 2 from NY, that would be nice.

Obviously I like them both, and when they play each other I root for the one that's got the best chance of going the furthest in the postseason. Think of a pair of horses with a common owner, but only one of them's good enough to compete in the Triple Crown races.

Plus, if the Orioles keep losing they'll get a #1 draft pick. But I still can't root for any other team against them, so that part of me is conflicted.

(And no, I don't want the Yankees to get Machado, unless it's necessary to keep him from the Red Sox. I'd much rather he stay in Baltimore.)

If Cessa can give the Yanks 7 good innings I won't consider the evening a total loss, even if the Red Sox hold on and win their 24th straight. Give Cessa/Germán/Loaisiga a bit more experience and that starting rotation will start looking respectable.

Sources: Dodgers have stepped up pursuit of a position player and are looking beyond Manny Machado. Have had conversations with Reds about Scooter Gennett, Twins about Brian Dozier and Mets about Asdrubal Cabrera. Dodgers’ versatility allows them to pursue a number of positions.

Given his poor track record, I would take 6 from Cessa and turn it over to Green/Shreve rather than gamble on Cessa going through the lineup yet again. In addition, if Cessa is someone to ever be relied upon, I'd err on the side of pulling him an inning early to let him have a confidence-boosting start instead of the risk of leaving him in just long enough to implode. But he's also done better tonight than I could have hoped, so I'm seeing anything beyond 5 IP as icing.

Just 4 years off. The ballot stuffing took place in 1956 and 1957, when the Cincinnati newspapers led the same sort of "vote for our players" crusade that nearly every team openly does today. The Red Sox are even promoting a Benintendi vote with a big message on the field. At least that's what you see on TV.

In 1956 the Reds fans elected 5 of the 8 starters, but when in 1957 they upped it to 7, the Commissioner overruled 2 of the 7 and then subsequently gave the vote to the players.

Of course the ballot stuffing's infinitely worse now, since you don't have to buy a newspaper and a stamp for every ballot you fill out. OTOH the fans today generally get it "right" the great majority of the time, or at least within shouting distance of it.

In 1939 the managers picked the starting lineup, and Joe McCarthy not only picked 6 Yankees, he let the 5 Yankee position players play the entire game. Of course the AL won the game.

Cessa was ok tonight, but I'm fine with never seeing him Gray make another start for the Yankees.

NOW it's fixed.

49 pitches thru 4 for Hendricks. Very good to see.

Javy just got javy'd by Hansen.

2 errors by rizzo this inning, that runner and run is all on him.

Oh, FFS. Just your routine score from first on a wild pickoff throw.

Rizzo can't really afford to be fielding like David Ortiz with the way he's been hitting.

that runner and run is all on him.
Eh, from third to the plate was on Javy getting Javied rather than Javying.

It's just like having Lester on the mound.

Excellent last pitch to Belt. Hendricks has to be encouraged by this outing.

Eh, from third to the plate was on Javy getting Javied rather than Javying.

There was only a runner on cause he dropped a throw. Then he whiffed on the pickoff throw that let Hansen get all the way to 3rd. So javy gets 6%, Rizzo the rest.

It looks like Hendricks can go another 10 innings today the way he's throwing.

Doesn't look like there's a drop of sweat on him.

Well, it’s San Francisco- it’s probably about 62 degrees there now.

Neither team really wants to score it seems.
