Kyle Gibson doesn't have much today, so, you know, pretty much your average Kyle Gibson start.

Carlos Carrasco is starting out equally garbage. It looks like Twins-Indians is gonna be a wild one.

Twins load the bases with no one out, then K-K-groundout. That was brutal.

New Orleans beat Round Rock 6-3 last night. New Orleans has a guy named Steve Lombardozzi, and I've reached the age where I seamlessly skip entire generations, because his father is named Steve Lombardozzi, was basically the same ballplayer, and I figured it was still the same guy.

I can tell my Delino Deshields apart.

This Indians-Twins game has settled down in a very disappointing, pitching-dominated way.

Lester's two worst starts this year now account for 18 runs (with a 19th on 2B) in 2 2/3 innings.

...and that's 19.

Hard to believe Lester could come close to replicating that awful start against Pittsburgh, but it only took him a month to do so.

I can see that happening with Eric Young Sr. and Jr. They have similar skillsets, though Sr. had a much more successful career. They are only 18 years apart in age. Junior was in pro ball while Senior was still active, but not in MLB until 3 years after Senior retired.

Griffey was only 19 years younger than his dad, and Raines Jr. was only 20 years younger than his. There wasn't much chance of anyone mistaking one for the other since in one case the Kid, and in the other the Pop, was far more famous. And of course both families had the chance to play in the same outfield briefly.

i wouldnt be surprised if the cubs get back into this game, the wind is blowing straight out.

When I was a kid making up players for my fictional baseball league there was the desire to have some juniors, but not the patience to wait 20 years or so for a junior to realistically play ball. We had Ryne Sandberg Solo, a jawa second baseman, win the rookie of the year as a 21 year old in 1985. In hindsight, it doesn't really make a lot of sense for a player to be named after Ryne Sandberg to be 21 just 3 years after Sandberg's rookie season. Maybe we should have called him Ryne Duren Solo.

Anyway, he had a kid who started as a 21 year old rookie just 8 years later. For that part I'll just assume that Jawas mature faster than humans. I mean, I have put cats in the league and if I wasn't the kind of responsible pet owner who has the vets spay and neuter, it is certainly possibly to have Fluffy Sr. and Fluffy Jr. in the same league, just one year apart in age.

There are few things that would make one nerdier than I was as a kid, but I think "making up fictional baseball leagues with players representing species and characters from Star Wars" might actually be one of them. Nice!

Twins had the tying run on 3rd base with nobody out, and couldn't bring him in.

This would be a hell of a comeback, but I have zero confidence in the Cub bullpen keeping Cincinnati at 9 for the rest of the game.

If the Cubs want to win this, they're probably going to need to get to 13 or 14.

exactly. The Reds have already used their two best available pitchers in this game (though, Raisel may be available in the 9th).

all tied up.

Kipnis with a homer, and now it's 7-2. The loss is going to put the Twins 1.5 games behind resting LAA and a full game behind resting KC in the WC2 race.

Give 'em an inning or two.

I don't know. It was all HRs in the beginning, and now runs scoring on doubles. I think they're running out of steam. We're going to have to start stringing some singles and walks together and small ball the way to 13 or 14.
   34. Random Transaction Generator Posted: August 17, 2017 at 04:33 PM (#5515661)
Josh Donaldson continues his torrid pace for August.

He was batting .383/.516/.894(!) for the month (62PA) before today's game, and he hit a solo shot in the first inning.
That's 8HR in 15 games.

Losing him for most of April and May hurt...
   35. Don August(us) Cesar Geronimo Berroa Posted: August 17, 2017 at 04:34 PM (#5515662)
Going into today, the Reds had a 5.95 era since the All-Star Break.... The starters at 6.46. And, that's with Luis Castillo pitching quite well...
   36. Brian C Posted: August 17, 2017 at 04:49 PM (#5515683)
Justin Grimm just threw a strike down the middle of the plate on a 2-2 count per Pitchcast, Turner started walking towards the dugout having struck out ... only for the ump to call the pitch a ball. Bizarre.

In other news, Justin Grimm has now given up 11 homers on the year, in what'll be 43.1 IP if he gets through this inning. That's just awful.
   37. slothinator Posted: August 17, 2017 at 04:49 PM (#5515684)
I look forward to the day Grimm is no longer on the Cubs so Maddon can't bring him in.

Ron & Pat are borderline incredulous that Iglesias is warming up in the 7th two days after getting 5 outs. It's almost as if this sort of thing didn't happen for several decades of ML history.

Jr. is one of those never-wases who is STILL beloved by some casual Nationals fans for his brief cups of coffee with the team. For a few years there, any time the Nats needed a player to fill in for an injured regular you'd read and hear his faithful scream for "LOMBO!!!" as if he were some great savior or sumpin.
   41. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 17, 2017 at 05:24 PM (#5515716)
If Baez-Happ had turned that double play, I would have bet all my money the Cubs win this game.

Hey, at least he keeps raising the bar. He hadn't recorded a clean inning yet, so he upped the ante today and didn't even throw a strike.

Four of their runs originated as walks.

Gary Sanchez 3-run HR. #22, and the guy missed a month of the season.

EDIT: That's 42 HRs in the 140 games Sanchez has played since he was called up last season. Not quite a full season for a catcher who hits well enough to get some "half-days off" at DH.

In 15 games, he has 9HR (2 today), 21 RBI, and is batting .400/.530/1.000

He (and Justin Smoak) might just drag the Blue Jays back into the playoff race...

Even if I were in favour of pitchers hitting flailing, I'd still want the exact same outcome in that at bat.

Up 7-0 and cruising, there's absolutely nothing to be gained for Severino from further adventures on the bases ...
