From RAB:

4:59pm ET: The moves have been announced. Sabathia is going on the 10-day DL with right knee inflammation. Also, Luke Voit has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton, and both Kontos and Torreyes have been called up. Jordan Montgomery was transferred to the 60-day DL to clear a 40-man roster spot for Kontos.

Just lovely ...

Eh, not ideal, but seems it's just the annual balky knee from CC. He'll probably miss one start and be fine.

I wonder if CardsFanBoy still thinks the Nationals will cruise right to the World's Series this year?

78° in Arlington and it’s been raining all day. Clearing now; they’ll get the game in (ARI @ TEX). Greinke vs. Colon, a fun matchup.

I’m actually at TexasLive!, our new drinks/food/music supercenter, or as somebody here called it, KeepBDCdrunk. A bunch of plastic restaurants surrounding a plastic band venue. I decided to eat at Troy’s! which may belong to Troy Aikman. Don’t see him here. And frankly unless Troy himself comes over to reminisce about the ‘90s Cowboys, I doubt I would ever come back here. But had to see it once.

this is the crossroads for Severino tonight (weather permitting):

1. the Mets almost never score for deGrom
2. the Mets hitters are too old, too young, and too bad

if he can't ace this test.....

highest OPS+, 2018 Mets, 50+ PA

1. NIMMO 133
2. Cespedes 127 (wait, he hurt)
3. ACabrera 126(he gone)
4. FLORES 118 (but Severino is not a lefty, alas)
5 Lagares 116 (he hurt)
6. MCNEIL (he rookie)
7. CONFORTO 112
8. BAUTISTA 101 (he old)

I thought it would be worse. and Austin Jackson 202 OPS+ in 44 PA

the annual balky knee from CC.
I mean, you can't really blame it.

Shouldn’t reliever Chad Sobotka have been part of the Gausman package headed to Baltimore?

Hah, I went looking for the “Like” button for #7.

This sounds like olberman calling the Mets game on tv. Is it?

Also, put me down as one who thoughts the nats would rally in the second half. But they can’t catch a break.

50 minutes till game time and this park is deserted - one of the last weeknights before the school year starts.

In an almost unprecedented development, I’ve at least heard of all ten Arizona starters, who are all good ballplayers except Jeff Mathis, who is at least famous for being bad.
   12. rconn23 Posted: August 13, 2018 at 07:56 PM (#5726062)
Yep, Sevy is officially broken. If this persists, the Yankees won't last past the WC game - if they make it to the playoffs.

They Jays are starting a pitcher for his first MLB game ever (Sean Reid-Foley) and a catcher for his first MLB game ever (Danny Jansen) in the same game.
I wonder how many times that's happened in MLB history...

RF Joey Gallo started in on a ball that flew over his head for a double, worst play I’ve ever seen him make.

Mets force Severino to throw 58 pitches in 2 IP.

I guess Calloway's pre-game reminder of that vaunted NYY bullpen kicked in, because they raced through only 12 pitches in a scoreless 3rd.

um, guys, it's the BACK END of the bullpen. chasing Severino in the 5th would be a good thing.

Smoltz on MLB Network today showed intriguing video of Severino continually missing the target by a foot in recent outings - and paying the price. plus he has already thrown more than 20 pitches with 2 strikes - and no he does not have 20 Ks in 3 IP.

being an old-school guy, Smoltz didn't like the week off from starts Severino got at the All-Star break.

oh, and Olbermann is actually good at this announcing thing. I wonder if some sort of surgery was involved.

told that famous story of Knoblauch's throw to 1st on a grounder landing in the seats and smacking his mom - a season ticketholder - in the face off a bad bounce. very funny that he said his mom loved the attention of being on the front and back pages of the NY tabloids for days.

Severino not mastering the concept of “shutdown inning” after his teammates tied it up.

The Mets even tried to Mets this game up as only they can and Sevy still gives up another dinger. Oh well, DeGrom at least isn't unhittable DeGrom tonight.

Conforto’s 3 ABs eerily similar in their awfulness.

I wonder if CardsFanBoy still thinks the Nationals will cruise right to the World's Series this year?

well only a ####### idiot would make any predictions about the post season, but after this four game series where the Nats will probably lose 3 out of 4, they should rebound just fine. But as far as the world series prediction goes, I'm taking the Cardinals to win it all no matter how they make it into the post season. Same as always.
   23. Howie Menckel Posted: August 13, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5726102)
so on a DP grounder, throw from 3B to 2B to rookie McNeil - who is well-trained in The Mets Way TM, so he doesn't know how to turn a DP - then throws the ball away to allow a run to score.

Gardner's slide is clearly legit to the bag - but doesn't he have to be able to maintain his hold on the bag? 19 replays and zero got that far (I would guess that he might have held the bag, but...).

ironically, in the next inning, Mets burned on that dopey "yes, he reached second safely, but his body popped up so the fielder knows to just keep tagging the guy in case of that millisecond....."

I didn't even bother not FF-ing thru the 5 minutes of replay - was he out?

man, I loved the idea of replay. over time, my fervor has diminished.

Olbermann is ready to abolish it. I'm not there yet, but hate myself for half-agreeing with him. especially on a night where he left his douchiness at home.

Why did Boone leave Cole in to face two left handed hitters with some pop? I’m beginning to think Boone isn’t quite sharp enough to manage a team with legit hopes of playing in the World Series (or at least losing to Houston in the ALCS).

He is an idiot.
   32. Howie Menckel Posted: August 13, 2018 at 09:52 PM (#5726125)
MLB writers last month said that the Yankees say they would never trade a rookie Gleyber Torres for 2 1/2 years of controllable deGrom - and the NYY callers on NYC radio agreed.

I didn't get it then, and I don't get it now.

a 122 OPS+ INF phenom at age 21 is a massive chip, even if the fielding is a mixed bag so far.

but um, deGrom is pretty good and the Yankees have won 1 World Series since 2000 and their roster only seems to need... another stud SP. and at the time they had plenty of INF so little hurt to the current offense (which when healthy doesn't need an offensive 2B anyway).

on my end, I'd rather have deGrom so all is good.
   33. Chip Posted: August 13, 2018 at 09:55 PM (#5726128)
(or at least losing to Houston in the ALCS).

Based on recent trends, they may have a shot at losing to Houston in the WC game.
   34. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: August 13, 2018 at 09:56 PM (#5726130)
DeGrom is only one Tommy J surgery away from being a total failure.
Torres needs to be kept !

Miguel also !

Get on base, Bird !
   37. Howie Menckel Posted: August 13, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5726134)
Mets lead cut to 7-5, a hapless Bird up for NYY with 2 outs no one on in the 8th - and the extreme shift lets him bunt for a hit and bring the tying run to the plate.

sure it's what's left of Torres and threat ends. and the Mets are not the only team, in this case, to be so stupid. but still.
   38. rconn23 Posted: August 13, 2018 at 10:16 PM (#5726138)

   39. Chip Posted: August 13, 2018 at 10:20 PM (#5726140)
That was a really bad play by Torres on what was a very low percentage shot at a DP to allow the 8th run.

   43. Loren F. Posted: August 13, 2018 at 10:38 PM (#5726149)
Based on his use of relievers, it looked like Boone decided the game was over in the sixth inning. But NYY came back, although the needlessly yielded extra runs put the game out of reach. Bad tactical decisions and I am unimpressed with the fundamentals of this team under Boone’s “leadership”.

Can you tell that I am down on Boone?

you may need to work on your overall reading comprehension.

"what's left of Torres" tonight was a 10 for 66 skid that turned into 10 for 67.

Marp with a 3-run homer to left center, off a decent pitch at the knees from a lefty, to give the Cards a 6-4 lead in the 8th. Yeah, he's still hot.

Cards are 16-9 under Shildt and have won 5 straight series for the first time since 2015. (Granted the last 6 games vs. Miami and KC, but still, they were losing series to bad teams earlier.)

Luis Severino has allowed 30 earned runs in his last seven starts.

Jacob deGrom has allowed 31 earned runs this season.

...........

also, Mets hit 5 HR tonight at Yankee Stadium.

they are playing in Williamsport, Pa on Sunday for that regular-season Little League World Series game against Phillies - gotta figure they are good for 3 more there
   55. Spahn Insane Posted: August 13, 2018 at 11:07 PM (#5726171)
Man, Martinez’s bullpen management and late inning strategy hasn’t impressed me at all. 20/20 hindsight and all that, but on consecutive nights he’s left a reliever who’d just loaded the bases, including two hit batters, in the game to allow a walkoff two-out grand slam, and tonight, failing to take what advantage the wild pitch offered by walking Carpenter.
   56. Perry Posted: August 13, 2018 at 11:30 PM (#5726179)
Great work by Dakota Hudson, coming in with 2nd and 3rd in a tie game with one out and retiring the side with no fuss. Unfortunately this was after Norris had already coughed up the save.
   57. Perry Posted: August 13, 2018 at 11:32 PM (#5726180)
Have to hand it to the Nats, fighting back in the 9th after what happened last night and after the Cards took the lead with a 4-run 8th tonight.
   58. salvomania Posted: August 13, 2018 at 11:33 PM (#5726181)
Another walk-off loss for the Nationals as Paul DeJong leads off the bottom of the 9th with a homer.

And boom, DeJong with the walkoff homer.

Well, the bullpen is a mess, not many good options out there. Bad timing, since the rest of the team has been better of late.

Dodgers bullpen blows its 4th straight late lead. Up 2-1 in the 9th, they surrender 4 two-out runs to the hated Giants. Will Smith now on to try to close out a 5-2 Giants lead.
