White Sox prospect Jake Burger tears Achilles tendon for 2nd time

Hahn said the long-term prognosis remains positive and he expects Burger to have “no restrictions” once his leg heals. Hahn said the latest injury occurred at Burger’s home in Arizona.

“He was walking in his backyard and took a step and unfortunately felt a pop,” Hahn said. “It appears nothing could have been done to prevent this, much like the first one.

“Doctors are very optimistic that this repair, the second repair, will take, especially with the graft-tissue attachment. It’s a step that’s made to help solidify the strength of the tendon and the repair.

Bad luck for one of the Pale Hose’s top prospects.

Jeff Kent is unimpressed.

Dan Marino's torn Achilles came as he planting his foot fairly routinely, IIRC. Sometimes they just blow out for no obvious reason.

I thought I remembered Bobby Tolan suffering a torn Achilles when he stepped off a curb to cross the street, but Wikipedia says it happened during a basketball game -- a contract-prohibited activity. Makes me wonder if he didn't try to cover the cause up at first.

When the posterior tendon on my ankle went out, it was just from stepping down to the street from a curb, like I'd done thousands of times before.

As he was putting away his crutches, he felt a pop.

So, as someone who is now afraid to take another step, ever, I am curious--was there any indication leading up to it? A little more soreness? Something?

I tore a groin muscle once a few years ago and in retrospect there was some indication. I had a point of soreness in it that I could feel slightly when I walked. WebMD told me (after it blew out completely) that soreness was from a very small tear already and rest would have taken care of it. I, blissfully unaware of this, instead chose to work through it and do heavy weighted squats. The rest is history, as they say.

My joints have always been pretty loose. For example, ever since I was a kid, I've been able to subluxate that tendon on both ankles at will by flexing the ankle muscle in a particular way, making a snapping sound like cracking a knuckle. And I'd sprained it maybe a half-dozen times before that.

As far as indications that it was about to blow, though? Nope. One second it was there, and the next, I was on the ground, rolling and swearing.

A guy on my baseball team was jogging around third base and ruptured his Achilles, he did the same thing to the opposite Achilles 4 years ago. He's also 50+ years old.

You have nothing to worry about unless you tear one. Then not only are you at risk for it to tear again but much more probable the other one will go as well.
