White Sox to lose Juan Nieves; Theo Epstein talks Cubs’ plans - chicagotribune.com

In other words…Cubs fans shouldn’t expect the team to make trades.

“We’re going to meet with teams and try to identify possible trade fits, but I don’t think it’s the type of offseason where we have a ton of fits with 25 of the 29 other clubs,” Epstein said. “We’ll pursue everything but realistically, our fits might be narrower this year (which would) give us more time to focus on the free-agent market.

“I think we’re going to have a fairly well-defined trade market early, because we don’t have unlimited assets to deal and we don’t necessarily have redundancy at positions in the big leagues or upper (minor league) levels.”

Darn. I like trades - they're the most interesting of all the transactions.

Agreed. Teams should at least shuffle 27-year-old AAAA lifers or swap a low-A live arm with control issues for a recent Dominican signing with a questionable makeup, just to keep things interesting for the fans.

(which would) give us more time to focus on the free-agent market.

Cuz last offseason I was so busy trading Zambrano, Marshall, Colvin and completing the trade for myself that I didn't even notice that Albert Pujols was a free agent. Jed will tell you, first time we played them, I asked "how come Pujols isn't in the lineup?" Man those were hectic times -- fun but just, y'know, hectic.

Did the reporter ask if Alfonso Soriano was available?

Without trades, I guess not.
