White Sox’s Welington Castillo suspended 80 games for PEDs

“I was recently notified by Major League Baseball that I had tested positive for EPO, a substance that is prohibited under MLB’s Joint Drug Agreement,” said Castillo via statement. “The positive test resulted from an extremely poor decision that I, and I alone, made. I take full responsibility for my conduct. I have let many people down, including my family, my teammates, the White Sox organization and its fans, and from my heart, I apologize. Following my suspension, I look forward to rejoining my teammates and doing whatever I can to help the White Sox win.”

We’ve heard this song before.

Well, at least he doesn't blame it on a doctor, or "supplements".

Honestly, I'm not so sure that we have. That sounds to me to be as close to "I took a banned substance. I knew it was a banned substance. And dammit, I thought maybe I could get away with it." as anybody. As snapper said, there's no "inadvertent" or "over-the-counter" or "prescribed by a doctor" in there.

Yeah. Good for him.

So much for his Hal of Fame chances.

EDIT: Somebody got to this joke first in the Dugout! But I'm still first with it in this thread.

That's a quality joke. And I saw yours first, so well done!

Agreed. He took full responsibility, didn't sugar coat it, and simply said he is looking forward to returning to his team after the suspension.

He took EPO. What was he thinking? Is he training for a marathon in his spare time?

"Somebody"?? At least credit me by name, sir. Hmph. Good day.

That was my initial reaction, too.

I want Tuesday's Orioles loss to the White Sox reversed.

Did anyone there make the "guess he won't be available to the Sox in the playoffs" joke yet?

Why is the suspension 80 games? The season is 162 games long. Suspending someone for half the season would be 81 games. Why not just do that?

But wasn't that only after he tried to create a fake website for the "supplements" he claimed to have taken?

Yeah. I haven't RTFA--did Wellington do that too?

Heh -

Actually, didn't he recently get benched for not running out a grounder or something?

Don't you want the first pick David? Never gonna get there if you win games against the Sox and KC.

I feel a bit bummed for Welington, always liked the guy, thought the Cubs treated him a bit badly and he's just bounced around since then, hitting well (for a C) pretty much wherever he went. And what a dumb substance to get busted for.

For anybody who doesn't know, as #7 implies, EPO is a substance taken by endurance athletes like marathon runners and cyclists ... especially for a grand tour. It increases the amount of red blood cells which improves oxygen "transportation" to the muscles which is primarily useful during extended periods of maximal effort like riding up an Alp. At best, it might shave a quarter-second off his inside-the-park HR time.

I don't think so. I was just saying that Melky's apology isn't a good example of contrition and taking accountability, b/c it only came after a buffoonish attempt at fraudulently evading responsibility.

I guess my sarcasm didn't come across. This could hardly be more different than what Melky tried to pull.

So he loses $4M of the 2/$15M deal he signed? So he gets $11M for using while playing in Baltimore. Pretty good deal.
