Whitlock: It’s time the Royals invested in Bonds

Barry Bonds should be wearing a Royals uniform this season. The game’s greatest hitter has yet to retire or be convicted of a crime. He’s been railroaded by the commissioner, a publicity-seeking federal prosecutor and the hypocritically self-righteous segment of the baseball media.

While virtually every other steroid cheater continues to play the game without incident or much backlash, America’s home-run king is being treated like a heavyweight champion with the audacity to conscientiously object to the Vietnam War.

...I could only find one man adamantly against my plan to bring Bonds to Kansas City.

“I don’t think you can sit out that long and still play,” former Royal Brian McRae told me. “He’s 45. His body is worn. He’s had the hip and elbow injuries. He popped his quad and hasn’t been working out much. I just don’t think he can still be effective.

“The Royals need to be a playoff team with the players they have.”

McRae is wrong. The Royals need to make a playoff push by any means necessary. And Barry Bonds needs to fail at least once before I believe he can’t play any more.

Thanks to Worn Body Barnald.

I guess he decided that Jeff George isn't coming back and now it's time to beat a new hobby horse for a while?

Dude is 45, hasn't played in 19 months, and just had surgery on his quad. I love me some Barry and think someone should have taken a chance on him last year, but the bog guy is done.

In all seriousness, the Royals should start taking a look at guys like Jim Edmonds and Ray Durham. If Willie Bloomquist is patrolling your outfield, you probably need help.

Ray Durham can play the outfield? Now? Could he ever play the outfield?

Teams have been trying to get Ray Durham to play the outfield for years, and he's steadfastly refused. Even now, he'd rather be retired than play the outfield.

The Royals could use Durham at 2B too. Callaspo could move over to play SS for the struggling Aviles, or move to 3B and move Teahen to the OF, while Guillen DH's and Jacobs and Butler platoon at 1B.

Other possible investments for the Royals:

Stocks.
Real estate.
Precious metals.
Money market funds.
Asian currency speculation.

Rebuttal Headline: Bonds with Zero Interest.

Bonds would have been a good pickup for anybody last year. I'm going against my own projection system with the opinion that his age, length of layoff, and injuries make it unlikely.

There sure are plenty of minor league OF's who could help. I really wonder what it would take to get the Rockies to part with Matt Murton, but if you're just trying to get someone better than Willie Bloomquist out there, give me a day and I could come up with 100 candidates. (Including Bonds - even if he's toast he'll outhit Willie when he's 60).

Mike Aviles - the question is, what happened in 2008? He wasn't much of a prospect before that, and is playing like a non-prospect now. Age 27 superfluke?

I'm betting he's a fluke, like a ton of others before him.

Does Edmonds still want to play?

Aviles's power is real, but the BA was a fluke.

Does Edmonds still want to play?

I think so, but he wants to be a starter (not platooned), and he wants to play center field. I don't think it's a good idea for a team to grant both those wishes right now.
