If Tanaka can shut down the Red Sox like Happ and Severino did, and if Oakland doesn't put a kibosh on the grand strategy come the WC game, that HFA in the Division Series is something the Red Sox might need to be clinging to in order to prevent a 2001 Mariners repeat. Not that that could ever happen.

Last night the Dodgers pinch hit Puig in the bottom of the 7th with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, tie ball game.

The Rockies had a righthander on the mound (Oberg). Alex Verdugo and Chris Taylor were next in the order (Freese ended up coming in to PH for Verdugo, not sure what lefties were available.) They pitched to Puig, and he homered to make it 5-2, which was the final score.

Is that a no-brainer that Puig should have been walked? I'm always leery of loading the bases, even for the "force at every base" or double play reasons. But then Puig is red hot as well, which is what has everyone second guessing it.

What does the book say on this, conventional or sabermetric?

I'm confused. Didn't the Mariners have home-field advantage?

All that could be true - and man, I hope it is - but I think the Astros are still the best team. They've got the largest run differential now, easily the best rotation and a more balanced lineup to top to bottom than anyone else.
   7. Tom Nawrocki Posted: September 20, 2018 at 03:05 PM (#5748226)
I would have walked Puig, but if he were really that red-hot, he would have been in the starting lineup, wouldn't he?

Gerardo Parra and his 79 OPS+ started in left field for the Rockies, taking away any claim, moral or otherwise, they had to winning that game. If David Dahl had started all year in left field, the Rockies would be in first place.
   8. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: September 20, 2018 at 03:05 PM (#5748228)
I don't quite understand #3, the Sox magic number for home field is 1. They are no more clinging to home field than they are the division.

Furthermore, the Mariners didn't lose until the ALCS...
   10. Blastin Posted: September 20, 2018 at 03:21 PM (#5748244)
Yeah it's funny with all this stuff going on that the Astros might just turn it on and win again after all.
   11. stanmvp48 Posted: September 20, 2018 at 03:22 PM (#5748245)
Parra is a better than average corner outfielder but not only does he not get on base or hit with power, he pulls a lot of boners on the bases.

And they lost in 5 games, the deciding game being in Yankee Stadium. So, they clearly had home field.

I remember that series well. I think I won about a grand on that series. Gave it all back when Rivera chucked the ball into CF though.

Yeah, but nothing could've helped that team. The Red Sox with the HFA would be a solid favorite over anyone but Houston.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I don't quite understand #3, the Sox magic number for home field is 1. They are no more clinging to home field than they are the division.

The point is that the way they've played in Yankee Stadium, they might really need that HFA.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the Mariners didn't lose until the ALCS...

When it comes to the postseason, the only question is "Did you win the World Series?" Especially after you've had a season like the Mariners did. It isn't like they were the 1973 Mets.

I suppose it was nice that the Mariners squeaked by the Indians in the DS despite being outscored by 26-16, but after winning 116 games in the regular season I doubt if they were very consoled.

And they lost in 5 games, the deciding game being in Yankee Stadium.

Except for the HFA, that 2001 ALCS was a repeat of what the Red Sox had in 1999. 4 losses with a lopsided win in game 3 as a consolation prize. Game 3 of 1999 was Roger Clemens' worst postseason start of his career, and game 3 of 2001 was the worst postseason start of El Duque's.

OK? So they "might really need" something that they already have (assuming they don't lose 11 in a row here). Isn't that like saying if it wasn't for all his money Bill Gates would be clinging onto his mansions?

No, it's like the difference between three days ago and today. The way the Yankees were playing since the last time they met the Red Sox,** that HFA would've been like the cherry on top of the cake. Nice but almost certainly unnecessary for the Red Sox to win a 5 game series. Obviously the HFA question itself was settled many weeks ago, but if the current mini-trend continues, the Red Sox might well need it a lot more than they would've needed it before the current series began.

** And more specifically, the way Severino has been pitching since the last time he and Price faced off in Yankee Stadium. Prior to last night, he couldn't beat his dick, let alone hold down the Red Sox.
   18. Nasty Nate Posted: September 20, 2018 at 04:46 PM (#5748313)

I think Severino finally looking good, and getting Judge and Chapman back far more significant than "a small sample".

which is zero, in terms of predicting the results of the ALDS.

Without Judge and an effective Severino this Yankee team has zero chance in the playoffs. With them, they've got a shot.

   21. Jose is an Absurd Force of Nature Posted: September 20, 2018 at 05:15 PM (#5748328)
Is Chapman back? I know he's been activated but has he pitched? Judge back and Severino pitching well are obviously important. None of that is what he was saying and those things would have been true (and equally important) if the Sox had won the last two games as well.

Exactly. It's the difference between having a aemi-respectable chance of advancing and having virtually no chance at all. Again, not that complicated a point.

Wow, you are not kidding.

I just plunked my arse into my chair at work and finally got a chance to check the scores. The A's are really trying super hard to make those playoffs! Now only if the Red Sox could help them out a bit today and somehow cobble together some runs and win the East.

Does losing 2 games in a row constitute a disaster? I'm not seeing it, but you NY fans just keep up the good work. I must say you guys were mighty quiet the last 2 weeks on the chatter though....

If that’s your point that’s fine but it’s not remotely close to what you said. You didn’t mention Severino, Judge Or Chapman but did reference home field advantage. If your point is he Yankees are better with those guys healthy, yes true. Still has nothing to do with HFA.

They'll still probably lose the WC game, which I'm OK with as long as Boone and his staff get fired.

Longest active MLB on-base streaks (including tonight's games in progress):
1-t. Brandon Nimmo, 27
1-t. Anthony Rendon, 27
3. Tommy Pham, 22
4. Trea Turner, 20
5. Joey Votto 18

Anthony Rendon hits the 100th home run of his career. He now has 22 on the season and has been on-base in 28 straight games. Trea Turner also comes in and the Nationals trail the Mets, 3-2.

I know a certain Mintysoda Twin who'd sign on for that added passenger. A few Yankees might, too.
