George Wright was a Texas Ranger outfielder of the 1980s who came out of nowhere to be a pretty good player in his mid-20s, and then saw everything collapse – I am not quite sure why, maybe he was just playing over his head. He ended up making extended swings through Mexican and Japanese leagues, so he stayed healthy well into his 30s, but he just stopped being good enough for major-league baseball.

I learned of George Wright when I read "If I Never Get Back" about 25 years ago (starting to feel old...). But outside of that novel, I've heard/read very little of him.

The "Grace's XI" against whom Wright played in Boston in 1872 was actually R.A. Fitzgerald's touring all-amateur MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) team, of which the young W.G. Grace was a member (he was 24). Harry Wright but not George also played against the first English cricket team to tour North America, in 1859, an all-professional team captained by George Parr.
With Grace's presence, Fitzgerald's team was the strongest English cricket team ever to tour North America; the amateurs were as strong as the professionals at that stage. (For all kinds of social reasons, amateurs and professionals tended not to tour together, until the Australian tours of the 1880s.)

Nice article. John Thorn is a fine baseball historian who takes the time to research and preserve history that deserves to be shared.
