Why Adrian Gonzalez can bother the Mets’ clubhouse | New York Post

“You don’t want somebody saying and talking the things he talks about if he’s not being productive, because he will have an opinion on most everything,” Valentine said. “That bugs some people, but it never bugged me. That’s what you’re getting into, and I think it’s well worth a half-a-million bucks. It’s a heck of a little gamble.”

Beware, Mets. You are THIS CLOSE to not having a Bobby-Valentine approved clubhouse atmosphere.

“He can really talk — he is a smart guy and he is excessive in his willingness to share his thoughts,” said Bobby Valentine, who managed Gonzalez with the Red Sox in 2012[...] I think it’s excessive to some people, because he really does talk a lot.”
“You don’t want somebody saying and talking the things he talks about if he’s not being productive, because he will have an opinion on most everything,” Valentine said.
Like, as he's saying it he's exhibiting the very tendency that he's describing. Truly amazing.
“He was one of the guys I really was able to talk to in Boston,” said Valentine, who managed the Mets from 1996 to 2002. “There was always a connection in my mind where I kind of followed what he was saying.
Yes, I can see how Valentine might be able to relate to someone who cannot discern when to keep his opinions to himself.
“If he was saying the same stuff to me and then saying it to some of the guys, maybe they didn’t like hearing it. That was a weird group that he was with up there [in Boston].”
This was just a gratuitous cheap shot, but it amused me. Keep fighting that fight, Bobby.

Bobby v should run for president. He overwhelms you words and enthusiasm but no real thought structure

Don't know if this is the default Mets thread now, but: report is that Mets wouldn't part with Nimmo in a McCutchen deal, which is what prompted the Bruce signing. That's an interesting wrinkle, and defensible stance on their part, esp given how little Bruce cost. Doubt that Bruce on his own will outperform McCutchen in 2018, but 3 years of Bruce + 5 of Nimmo>1 year of McCutchen.

So, in other words, as long as he's a productive hitter, no one will care what Adrian says.

Same rules as in every other clubhouse. If Bonds and Kent hadn't consistently helped the Giants win games, no one would have put up with them, either.

All I know is that when Adrian was with the Padres there were never any complaints from anyone that I saw or heard, but then, that was during his most productive period, so maybe no one noticed.
