Why Jamie Moyer isn’t a Baltimore Oriole

Jamie Moyer is baseball’s unlikeliest story. At 49, and coming off of major elbow surgery, he’s not only become the oldest player ever to win a game, he’s also managed to pitch well enough to be considered the Rockies’s ace, though that may say just as much about the Rockies’s other starters as it does about him.

...

Nevertheless, none of this would have ever happened had the Baltimore Orioles stayed true to their word.

Jamie Moyer is a great story and no one likes Dan Duquette.

Having said that, if we go back to 1996, in five April starts Moyer had a 6.59 ERA and a 7.77 FIP. After a strong first start, Moyer allowed 20 runs in 20 innings and was sent to the bullpen. Twelve of his next 13 appearances come as a reliever and his one start he allows 4 ER in 3 IP. Then Moyer makes four straight starts before being traded.

I have no doubt that the '96 Red Sox clubhouse was a disaster and it wouldn't surprise me if Moyer asked for a meeting with Duquette and the Duke blew him off.

But Moyer was not jerked around in 1996 as much as this article makes it seem. His usage seems perfectly reasonable.

This should have great potential to be a meme.

Strange that apparently the Padres weren't interested (story mentions his family is in SD and he hoped to sign with the Angels to be close to them). And you'd think Moyer would rather have that velocity and elbow in that park than Coors.

And entertaining -- Moyer has the best ERA+ in the Rox rotation and the 2nd best is 23-year-old Drew Pomeranz.

Been a fan of Moyer since his original stint with the O's a thousand years ago, and love how he's kicking father time's ass up and down the block. But truth be told right now he'd be the 8th or 9th best starter in Baltimore's system. Would Moyer be okay with being AAA Norfolk's long man out of the pen? Hardly.

Sometimes things work out just the way they're supposed to.

Looks like Moyer's about to lose a possible win.

This reads more like a writer with a vendetta against Duquette than any kind of fair description of what happened.

If Woody had gone right to the police, this would never have happened.

Then on November 8, the Orioles announce that after a search that saw them rejected by nearly every capable candidate in baseball, they've hired Duquette.
From the article.

Jerry DiPoto took the Angels job (who wouldn't?) and a Toronto assistant was offered the job but chose to stay with the Blue Jays. His reasons are unknown. I don't know of anyone else in baseball who was offered the Oriole job and turned it down. There are only 30 of these jobs in existence. Last year only LA and O's had a vacancy and I imagine the Orioles had plenty of applicants.

Duquette has turned out to be very impressive so far. I am a bit curious as to why he wants Miguel Tejada on the team. Doubt there is much left in the tank and he will only take playing time from younger players. Giants found Miggie really only can play 3rd these days and if Brian Roberts returns to play 2nd, then Robert Andino will need playing time and a position. Wilson Betemit, Ryan Flaherty and Mark Reynolds have covered the starts at 3b. All seem to have more of an upside.

Supposedly LaCava wanted free hand to clean house and fire anyone in the organization, and Angelos vetoed. Depending on who you ask, this was because Showalter wanted some say as well. Who knows?

The other GM candidate who walked away was De Jon Watson, who supposedly thought he was being jerked around and was only brought in for the "Rooney rule". Again, who knows?

Tejada is being allowed to work out for the team at his request. He's not really viewed as a solution and he's being given a shot as a favor due to his history with the org. Once again, who knows?

I do know that Orioles would be smart to keep looking for a 3B. Yet another Reynolds error just extended an inning late in a tie game with the Red Sox.
