Orioles published their Wild Card roster. Also with 11 pitchers (Saunders + backup starters Britton and Johnson + two semi-starters Hunter and Arrieta, 6-man bullpen), only 2 catchers (Wieters! and Teagarden!!), 6 infielders, 5 outfielders, and one very slow DH. [Britt Ghilori]
Britt was a swimmer in college and is probably reasonably fleet of foot. I don't know how good of a hitter she is.

I'm just wondering how Buck got her on the roster, and why she's starting at DH.

So I just messed with my MLB AtBat app and I was able to get the feed for the game. It looks like I'm going to have a stationary camera (I can choose from several angles). That's pretty nifty.

I'm reading the at bat thing, and it looks like you have to pay for it? Why? Isn't it's only purpose is to allow you to watch your subscription for mlbtv.com... You are paying for that feature already, it seems somewhat redundant to be forced to pay for a viewer also.
   106. Best Regards, President of Comfort, Esq. Posted: October 05, 2012 at 04:47 PM (#4255424)
Download the free version of At Bat and log in with your MLB account.

And MLB At Bat, without an MLB.tv subscription, allows you to listen to the radio broadcasts.

Okay, downloading At-Bat light. Should be helpful on trip up and down from Baltimore (the Baseball gods willing). My data plan will not die in vain.

It's very unclear - this happened to me at the start of the season. Do NOT pay for At Bat if you already pay for MLB.tv. Download the free At Bat Lite and then log in - it converts itself to the pay version without charging you further.

Also, the TV feed works on my older (2.3) Android phone but not a much newer (3.1) tablet. Stupid Android fragmentation.

The ad says 10 different camera angles, I'm only counting 6. I'm hoping the "high home" is the angle that shows the entire infield. It would be really cool to have the camera angle that shows the defensive positioning during the game (I honestly don't think fox sports midwest has that option ever, it seems like they almost never show it, when it's arguably the single best camera angle for replays to show off the defense.)

I think more angles are added later. No reason to see the dugouts, for example, before the game itself.

Hinske over Francisco also allows Fredi to use Martin Prado as the backup to 3B, SS, or 2B as needed. The only other SS he has on the roster is Tyler Pastornicky, who can't play SS.

Note: I don't need the atbat app, was just reading about it because of the other posts on it.

I think I'm warming up to this format. It's a gimmick. But it's a gimmick that will provide a lot of crazy fun baseball.
   116. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 05, 2012 at 04:53 PM (#4255440)
I count 7 though I'm not entirely sure what the hell a "Super Mo View" is.

On my app I've got the score in the top left and then on the right a little icon to see the box score, 3 little dots that allow me to see other scores and a tv icon that...well it doesn't seem to do anything right now. I'm hopeful that will allow me to change views as the game progresses.

Like Preservedfish, I get the feeling that in future years I'm going to love this format. But this year with the Orioles, it's going to drive me crazy.

They have the high speed camera they use for the super slo mo. It's the view from that camera (but played at regular speed).

They aren't showing anything right now (at least on my phone). All I've got is a note telling me that the event will begin shortly.

And I'm with the Fish. As gimmicky as this is it's basically two Game Sevens in one day. Someone's season is going to end today and particularly with the AL game it's two teams that it will be really crushing for I think.

It would be more crushing for the Rangers, as they were, y'know, supposed to be the best AL team since the 1990s, or something. The Orioles would be crushing, but not jump-off-a-bridge level.

Yep, nothing showing yet, but I'm somewhat giddy with the concept of being able to choose the camera angles.

I have pretty much supported this format since about a month after it was proposed, I had to be convinced, but ultimately I think it's the best format as far as compromise can go. You can never satisfy the traditionalists of course, but this strengthens winning the division, it even helps the wild card team that easily wins the wild card(like the Braves) in that they can give themselves their best pitcher for this one game format. Yes there are always going to be years that you might not have an exciting finish, but that has always been the case, in the pre-wildcard days you might be lucky to get one race a year, in the pre-divisional days, some seasons September was just a waste of everyone's time(see 1968) At the same time you have to balance it out so that there is some teams going home disappointed.

Don't think the Orioles would be crushing at all. They have exceeded every expectation and should be happy as heck. Of course every team that loses will be crushed in a way of course, but I don't think that the Orioles will be particularly crushed.

As much (justifiable) criticism as Braves' fans have gotten for their lack of playoff enthusiasm over the years, it looks like they've packed Turner Field and come energized.

   133. Gamingboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:11 PM (#4255465)
It appears that they still don't have all of the camera angles. Have to wonder if maybe it's because this could end up being a one-game deal: why bother putting in all of the cameras when they'll have to take 'em down if the visitor wins?
   134. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:14 PM (#4255466)
I don't like that I have to get out to change views but that's a quibble. I mean hell, the ability to do this is something that was unfathomable to me as a kid. I remember watching games on a 12 inch black and white TV #oldfart

Gotta mess with this. I think Quad View is the winner just because of the options. Not sure what the bottom right option on that view is but the guy running it got into someone's whiskey collection early.

With the Cardinals offense in September, that would be 10 runs more than needed.

I agree but I think it would be a bit empty to go through all they went through, make the playoffs and then play one road game and be done. You're right, they should be playing with house money but I think the format changes that. It would have to suck after 15 years to not even get a single home game.

Quad View is the winner. Top left is the traditional view from behind the pitcher, then high home view on the top right so I can see everything that happens then bottom left and right are first and third base line views. Both of those cameras move too much.

Noooo... I think the tomahawk chop is worse than those. It is literally tiresome: it actually has a narcotic effect that stifles enthusiasm. And it happens during the game, like at all points during the game, endlessly. "Sweet Caroline" is just a dumb mid-inning ritual.

I just discovered the regular MLB.TV lets you change broadcasters (so's I could listen to the radio team if I infinitely preferred them, for example). But the postseason.tv doesn't give you the same option.

I don't understand why I can't pay a fee and stream what they're showing on TBS.

Jeff Kent

Who is Brian McCann?

You have to be ####### kidding me.

If I was a Reds fan, I would be whining about the time out :)

Just when I was wondering if Kyle Lohse is actually a good pitcher now.
   181. PreservedFish Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:43 PM (#4255524)
Also, Jeff Kent was a career .290 hitter. Not TTO.
   182. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:44 PM (#4255525)
What was the purpose of that bunt? Setting up the lineup for the next inning?

Does the timeout count as an umpiring gaffe?

Can I really not listen to the game streaming online for free ? WTF is wrong with MLB ? I listened to the Cards-Rams game last night without any problems.

If this game ends 2-0 that timeout is going to be, ah, scrutinized.

Let's see, if the umpire does his job correctly---he doesn't call time when the pitcher has already started his motion---then it's a 0-0 game after two.

Instead, the ump gaffes and now it's 2-0 Braves.

I know Ferdie looks like a genius now for starting Ross, but jeez,, was that a lollipop change up or what?

It was pretty much the exact same pitch that struck him out on the previous timeout. Not sure why he went back to the same pitch. It's never going to work twice in a row.

I myself am not sure about the gaffeworthiness of that. MLB needs a Kevin Pereira.

McCann on bench [X]
   190. PreservedFish Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:48 PM (#4255539)
Why on earth is David Ross a backup? Ross backing up McCann reminds me of Todd Pratt backing up Piazza.
   191. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:48 PM (#4255540)
I think it's ridiculous that they are allowed to have a one game roster, but at the same time, this is the type of bench that I think baseball should be shooting for on a daily basis.
   192. esseff Posted: October 05, 2012 at 05:49 PM (#4255541)
It's possible, of course, that the umpire yelling, "Time" might have had an effect on Ross' swing-and-miss.

Bottom line, the umpire's decision to call time after Lohse began his wind-up affected the results of the game, one way or the other.

I went ahead and am listening to the national broadcasts....and they are talking about the Cardinal injuries.... Let me explain something, those injuries were expected, maybe not the Carpenter injury, but for the most part the Cardinals should not have been surprised at the number of games lost to injury this season, it was well within expectations. You get an old team, filled with players who haven't been healthy over the past four years, you have to expect injuries, to woe is me at the end of the season is not being realistic.

Why bunt with Prado? Just hit and run.

Cardsfanboy- I actually just rewound to check the location of the two change ups. The first one was a good one- down and on the corner of the plate. The second one was up and over the plate. If you throw the change twice in a row, the second one better be a quality pitch.

No. Because that would be ridiculous. It's only happened twice ever. Why the hell would I put a no-hitter on the list. Oh, right... because baseball is weird.
