It's the format that MLB has chosen.

You say this as if I have to like it.

You play the hand that's dealt. I'm sure they won't feel this way, but there should be no shame in losing a one-game playoff - it's pretty much a crapshoot.
   305. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:01 PM (#4255685)
Being a Braves fan since 1991 has been a unique experience. I'd never argue that it's anything but overwhelmingly positive; I'm from Kansas City, I've seen true fan misery. But in terms of sheer quantity of October frustration and pain, the Braves really are unmatched in recent history.

Except by the Indians.

Oh, go to hell Kellogg. If down the middle at the knees isn't a strike then nothing is.
   307. DA Baracus Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:02 PM (#4255687)
Listen, I ####### DESPISE this new system. But I still love baseball, so I can still be happy watching an elimination game.

That's because the team you root for isn't playing.

OH #### YOU UGGLA.
   308. Gamingboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:02 PM (#4255688)
Uggla just thought it was a Yankee Stadium All-Star game. CONRADIAN.
   309. jack the seal clubber (on the sidelines of life) Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:02 PM (#4255689)
what a play by Uggla.

Uggla super Conradian
   311. Lassus Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:02 PM (#4255691)
Yes, she and Rory are very very much gone.

And for all the lead-up to it, it was a real snorer. I mean the actual ending, the episode was decent enough, but the "OMG FINALLY GONE" was completely dull.

Also, did I imagine Amy being a famous model? It never came up again. PLlblblblblblbbbbbbbbbb Moffat.

Braves becoming unraveled.

You say this as if I have to like it.

True, sorry didn't mean you have to like it, but the teams went into the season knowing what it takes to make the post season and the results if they don't win the division.

I don't see why the team with the fourth best record in the NL has the right to complain about having to play the team with the fifth best record in the NL. When it's possible that the team with the best record in the NL is going to be forced to play the team with the fourth or fifth best record, and having to wait a day to figure out where they will have to fly out to.
   313. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:03 PM (#4255693)
Now the Braves fans have something to blame on Uggla.
   314. bunyon Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:03 PM (#4255694)
You don't have to like it Baracus. But if that's the case, I recommend doing something else you do like. I mean, I could totally get not liking this game and deciding to go do something else. But why watch and #####?
   315. Dr. Vaux Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:04 PM (#4255697)
Except by the Indians.

The Indians were the best team in baseball how many times? How many times were they the second best? Once, and they lost to the best that year. The Braves were probably the best team at least seven or eight times, and one the World Series once.

Unfortunately, 95% of baseball fans don't understand this. And 95% of posts I'm reading right now are calling the Braves chokers. For most fans, this is the game that matters. This is the game that defines the season.

And that bothers me. Maybe it shouldn't, but it does. The Braves had a very good season regardless of how this silly Selig short-attention span game ends.

Come on. He's a baseball fan, and his team is in the game. Baseball is like crack. You can't get away from it, even if you want to. I virtually checked out for a lot of this season because I hated the new format, but my girlfriend pulled me back in by deciding to be an Orioles fan. Now we're sitting here together ######## about how they have to get eliminated in just one game, though it's a little better since they'd have been in a one-game playoff for the wild card under the old rules, too.

100 percent this.

4th best record in MLB.

They are behind the Nationals and the Reds and tied with the Giants. That is fourth best in the NL, or you can call it third best either way, the Cardinals are only one spot behind them in the Nl.

Disgraceful that TEX and BAL should be in this one-timer while DET skates in with the same record as STL.

Well, technically, TEX and BAL would be playing the game tonight no matter what, since they tied for the best WC record...
   341. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:12 PM (#4255723)
Another three or so runs, and the Cardinals bullpen might be able to keep this game close.

I cannot put into words how much the the projected outcome of the Braves/Cards game pleases me.

Even though as a Nats fan I fear the Cardinals...Jesus Christ they're doing it again.
   347. zachtoma Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4255730)
Well this game is another October disaster for the Braves, I don't know why I chose to go into this one with any sense of optimism. Chipper boots it and gives the Cardinals a decisive advantage in the playoffs, it's like 2001 all over again - happy last game of your Hall of Fame career. I feel sick.
   348. Lassus Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:14 PM (#4255731)

Wait, seriously people: we're not allowed to watch the games and b*tch here in the comments about what's going on in them?

That's the entire point of these threads, right? I mean, that's what I plan to be doing in them. Give DA Baracus a break.

It's the same argument. The Braves were the better team over 162 games in many ways.

Yeah, my comment was over the top. I'm sorry. I'd forgot you were a Braves fan. My point was, you said it was "unexciting". And I didn't mean "love it or leave it" - I really was just sort of curious. If you don't like the format and don't find it exciting, why watch?

And forget my comment about no shame. There would have been no shame losing 4-2. But the defense has not been good (I missed Chipper's error).
   355. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:16 PM (#4255738)
None of the camera angles show Kozma scoring.... Uggh....
   356. zachtoma Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:17 PM (#4255739)
The Cardinals are the anti-Braves in the past few years, very rarely among the best few teams in the NL but when they get into the playoffs - unstoppable. They might make another run this year.
   357. salvomania Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:18 PM (#4255740)
4th best record in MLB.

Braves have a better record than 12 NL teams, the Cardinals have a better record than 11 NL teams.

The TBS main feed didn't even catch it until after it happened, so it was really bad camerawork all around.
   359. bunyon Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:18 PM (#4255742)
From a Braves fan standpoint, the thing that sucks is: if this format were in place last year, we get in. If last year's format were this year, we're in the LDS. It is pretty crappy timing.

But, at the end of the day, my Braves haven't actually WON anything in these two seasons. Neither season comes anywhere close to the pain and anger of 1997.

   361. Gamingboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4255744)
Hey, one brightside is that if the Cardinals win the World Series again, they'll pull ahead of the Yankees in the "Best Franchise in the 21st Century" standings....
   362. cardsfanboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:19 PM (#4255745)
It's the same argument. The Braves were the better team over 162 games in many ways.

So were the Nationals over the Braves.... The Braves should be happy to be in the dance at all. It's bad enough for the Nationals that they have to play a team that couldn't win their division.
   363. zachtoma Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4255746)
I think the Cardinals are about to overtake the ineffectual and basically pathetic Mets as my most-hated NL team.
   364. Depressoteric feels Royally blue these days Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:21 PM (#4255747)
I can't shake the feeling that my overwhelming sense of relief right now, about not having to face Kris Medlen and the Braves in a short series for the NLDS, is going to turn out to be one of those horrifying "be careful what you wish for" moments when the goddamned Cards do the same goddamned sh*t they do seemingly every friggin' year and connive their way to another World Series over the Nats' corpses.

All that said, I'm still glad it's looking like the Nats won't face Medlen. That guy gives me hives.

That's a fine argument if you want to go back to 2 divisions. But with 3 divisions having a team take a week off is a bug not a feature.

That is a stretch to be honest. Cardinals only have made it to the playoffs twice since 2006. If your only qualifier for best team is win loss record, then you are looking at it wrong. The Cardinals had better Run differential than everyone but the Yankees and Nationals. Had a six season stretch from 2000-2005 where they averaged 95 wins a year(and won only 83 in 2006 then won the world series)

Oh god, Chipper Jones is having an absolutely awful game.

Well, that AB was shorter than I imagined.

Lassus, surely this must be bittersweet for you, to see your greatest foe go down so quietly...

Yeah, I expected him to get to 3-1 before weakly grounding out.

Chipper hit that fairly well, just right at DeScalso.

LOB through seven innings: Cardinals 1, Braves 7.

Did I miss Kenny Rogers choking on a chicken bone?

Got to thinking: Who was last guy with 0 professional managing experience to win the World Series?

Heh. It's not that bitter. Sorry, Braves fans.

Yeah obviously he was trying to go into RF and score two, but... it just didn't work out. Holliday just showed him how to do it.

And now Chipper turns a hot shot into a double play.

He was on the Daily show(or Colbert report) this week(I can't remember, I don't watch any of their interviews that feature entertainers) I thought according to the star(or enquirer etc) that he was supposedly dying.
