The Braves' color guy just said that he was looking up Washington weather reports when Heyward robbed Molina's homer in the second. Someone might want to mention the 2-3 LDS structure to him.

Not that it's going to matter at this point.

Got to thinking: Who was last guy with 0 professional managing experience to win the World Series?

Brenly.

(I can't remember, I don't watch any of their interviews that feature entertainers)

Ditto, though I made an exception for Jon Stewart's interview with Olivia Wilde last week. That was a good decision. Good Christ, she is striking.

Bob Brenly for the Diamondbacks.

The pitcher?

D'oh.. I had forgotten there was another one.

Bob Brenly for the Diamondbacks.

(Checks)

Yup, he had coaching experience, but no managing. Thanks.

I do make exceptions if it's a good comedian...not really for hot women though.
   411. Greg Pope thinks the Cubs are reeking havoc Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:45 PM (#4255797)
The Braves should be happy to be in the dance at all. It's bad enough for the Nationals that they have to play a team that couldn't win their division.

Isn't that preferable to playing a team that did win their division?
   412. Gamingboy Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:45 PM (#4255798)
Wild thing...

I know it's only for this year but I do like the possibility that the 1 seeds could have only 1 home game.

I want to dislike the chop, but it's always cool when you can get a crowd to do something in unison. The wave is cool the one out of 1000 times it actually works right.

If the Cards won the Series Matheny would be unique in his circumstances. Bucky Harris is the only rookie manager with zero previous coaching or managerial experience to win the Series, but he was an active player at the time.

Isn't that preferable to playing a team that did win their division?

Yes, and isn't it preferable for the Braves to have to play a team that they posted 6 more wins than?

You can torture the logic anyway you want, but it doesn't matter, there is nothing that the Braves have to do, that makes their complaints any more legitimate than the Nationals or Reds complaining about the Braves in the post season.

The left field umpire has no business making an infield fly call.

First postseason forfeit?

Agree with 440...horrible call, don't know if it will affect the game yet. Three runs is still three runs. Although bases loaded one out vs 2nd/3rd two outs.

That's just a horseshit call. The Braves needed to outright protest this game, it's utterly ridiculous to call an infield fly on that ball when he did.
   460. zachtoma Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:55 PM (#4255846)

From the replay, I still cannot believe that call was made when it was made. The ball's behind the shortstop falling on open grass when the umpire put his arm up.
   469. bunyon Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4255855)
Fredi shouldn't still be in the game. And the ump should be fired. As I say, the OUTFIELD umpire can't call the infield fly rule.

#### it, call a forfeit. Darling says Holbrook was nearly hit. Damn shame he wasn't. Run over him with the jeep.
   470. Benji Gil Gamesh Rises Posted: October 05, 2012 at 07:57 PM (#4255856)

Contrarian thought asked on TBS: Did either the SS or LF give up on the ball when he heard/saw the infield fly rule called/signaled?

From the replay, which admittedly does not include sound, the LF ump puts his arm up after the SS gives up on the play. Which strikes me as insane, but here we are.
   494. Dale H. Posted: October 05, 2012 at 08:01 PM (#4255880)
It's not protestable.

"4.19 No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire."

"2.00 The umpire must rule also that a ball is an infield fly, even if handled by an outfielder, if, in the umpire’s judgment, the ball could have been as easily handled by an infielder. The infield fly is in no sense to be considered an appeal play. The umpire’s judgment must govern, and the decision should be made immediately."

So it looks like a judgement call. A really crappy judgement call.

I'm not a Braves fan, but this is ridiculous. Protest the game and dump the whole umpiring staff from the playoffs..

If the game gets forfeited, do the Packers fly to DC to play the Nationals?

I mean, wow.

Honestly, does anyone know: can you protest a game over a IF rule call?

You can protest a rule error but not a judgment call. If the umps think it was ordinary effort then it's an awful call but not protestable. If the umps say its any catchable ball or something like that then you could protest.

So, what's the actual rule? Sounds like the "ordinary effort" part is key? Location on the field doesn't matter, it seems (assuming a high enough popup a guess).
