I hope he at least gets on...
Holbrook should be gone.
I understand you're a pissed off Braves fan, and it's not fair that umpire stupidity might cost you a playoff trip. That said...
It's just a baseball game. The umpires aren't in cahoots against the Braves. It's totally pointless to throw ####, even if it's paper #### that can't hurt anyone. All it does is delay play and risk your team having to forfeit. It's not going to magically reverse the call or make the umpires become better umpires. Same thing with storming the field. I doubt that when you calm down you'll still think that storming the field would be a reasonable response to bad umpiring.

Umpire.
I think the umpire gave Chipper the call, but who cares.
Chipper Jones, Human Shield.
YES!!
I'm pretty calm, Alan. I didn't really expect us to win and I don't think we would have, necessarily, if the right call was made.
But, yeah, fans should express anger at that ####. Every fall we get some terrible call taht affects a game. We all invest a lot of time and effort and many of us money. I don't think we should all just sit on our hands and give a library clap because the nice little man tried hard. If MLB will discipline their guys or have some sort of merit retention, then fine. They clearly don't give a ####. If the rules don't apply to the league and the guys on the field then they shouldn't apply to the rest of us.
Freeman!
C'mon, it's three run homer time
If the Braves lose this the focus is going to be on the infield fly. But the Braves have had opportunities in each of the last three innings. A loss would be pretty squarely on the offense's shoulders.
So express anger. There's a big difference between booing loudly and longly and starting a mini-riot.
This.
That's what frustrates me the most about that call. All the talk tomorrow is going to be "Atlanta got screwed over by the umpires and the 1 game playoff system" when Atlanta's done a lot themselves to lose this game.
That's a question no one will ask Chipper tonight, tomorrow, or ever.
Yup, three errors and twelve menLOB. The call sucked but the Braves earned this loss.
You were fun to watch.
God, I am beginning to hate the Cards.
More importantly, now that the AAAA game is over, bring on the O's!
So let us know when a mini-riot starts.
Throwing stuff on the field isn't standard behavior for spectators.
Sure was. Wow.
Second that, Snapper......even more now
Bunyon was saying he'd have had no problem with the fans storming the field, which I'd consider a mini-riot. What they actually did was simply inappropriate and boorish.
Still, sorry to all the Braves fans not named Sam. No one should have to watch their team lose like that.
As a Cardinal fan, get used to it. The Denkinger call is all about Denkinger nowadays and not the fact that it only set up the tying and go ahead run.
Yes, they sure responded differently than the Red Sox did.
Now where did I put my old Smiths albums....
There was nothing more dangerous than an empty can thrown. That's not close to a riot.
Brian McCann gets in the game [X]
Got it. Edited it in.
Also, it means Michael Young is wearing a glove.
Edited to add, Never mind, it's on TNT
edit
Oh, TNT.
They aren't and it is.
It's still wrong according to what I understand the spirit of the rule to be, which is to prevent teams from turning cheap double plays by dropping pop-ups. There was no chance of that happening there.
From the rule book - When it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpire shall immediately declare “Infield Fly” for the benefit of the runners. If the ball is near the baselines, the umpire shall declare “Infield Fly, if Fair.” There was nothing immediate about that call.
Out of a hundred times that ball is hit, how many times is that call made?
Which is when the ball is 30 feet from the ground and the infielder is ducking for cover?
In any case, that is not an "ordinary effort" fly ball. Those fall in routinely if the OF doesn't get there.
That doesn't actually require the call be made immediately, only that the call be made as soon as it becomes apparent to the umpires that the ball is an infield fly (not saying that it was applied accurately in this case, only that the rulebook doesn't require the umpires call it right away).
* Seriously, I'm pissed - about the call and the state of MLB umpiring generally - but that call did NOT cost the Braves the game. It didn't help but, one out bases loaded has hardly been the Braves finest hour recently.
Sigh.
(btw, the rule even states that if the outfielder calls off the infielder to catch the ball, the infield fly is still called if the umpire believes the infielder COULD catch it.)
And, yeah, I know I'm a choir of one.
I'd be fine if someone would throw a cup at Joe Torre, too. On general principles.
