Will Duquette make an August trade? Probably. Will it make a difference? Most likely not - BaltimoreBaseball.com

How long can Duquette keep the Orioles viable?

Both of Duquette’s deals this July fit into that same category, and received a collective ho-hum from me and much of the fan base, Of course, acquiring shortstop Tim Beckham looks so far like a stroke of Duquette genius, and Jeremy Hellickson has been solid in two of his three starts.

And, so, I suppose it’s no harm, no foul if Duquette makes another deal this month to acquire a player that can be eligible for a potential playoff roster (trades can be made in September, too, but the players acquired in those can’t appear in the postseason). And I do expect it to happen (so does Rich Dubroff, Orioles writer for pressboxonline.com. He was my guest on my weekly WOYK radio show, which can be heard here.)

Acquiring Tim Beckham who has been hot for 13 games is a stroke of genius?

Even before the hot streak, it was a stroke of genius, or at least a stroke of luck.

3+ years of a cost-controlled league average shortstop for last year's 6th round draft pick? Sign me up.

14 games. Which have already produced more WAR than JJ Hardy did in the last three years combined.

Beckham now batting .500/.517/.897/1.414 as an Oriole in 58 ABs. I don't know if he's changed his approach at the plate since coming to Baltimore, but he certainly appears to be going to RF with power way more often now than he did with Tampa. According to the ESPN home run tracker Beckham hit twelve HRs as a Ray, with only one of them going to the opposite field. As an Oriole he's hit four HRs, and three of them have gone out the opposite way. I can't find anything that tracks double and triples, but my memory says that most of those have gone to the opposite field as well since he joined the Orioles.

Don't know if it was a brilliant trade that brought him to Baltimore, but if Beckham was stinking the joint up I know most people would be painting Duquette as the goat.

It was obviously a good trade. "3+ years of a cost-controlled league average shortstop for last year's 6th round draft pick?" pretty much tells you all you need to know. BTF called it a win for Baltimore before he was on the plane to Baltimore.

Is Beckham a terrible fielder? I don't get why you'd move him and keep Brad Miller, Trevor Plouffe and Adeiny Hechavarria.

C'mon, the quote was it "looks SO FAR like a stroke of genius."

Well at least we know he's healthy, so there is that.

Aren't the Orioles the kings of nixing a trade if the medicals look sus?

Odd trade for the Rays. I've been trying to squint and see what they did here and I must be missing something. I usually try to see an advantage that each side may have gained but this one has me perplexed.

Edited for spelling

Come on, where are you ever going to find two cooler names than those?

[5] Actually, it doesn't. Sometimes 6th round or later round picks have an unexpectedly strong debut and sometimes they've washed out within a year, so saying he was last year's 6th round pick isn't particularly helpful. Also, a 6th rounder is sometimes a signability guy now since there is a limit to the bonuses of top ten picks combined.

I'm glad I'm not one of your calculus students.
