Will Mets’ near $200 million spending spree actually pay off?

Has a new era of New York Mets baseball arrived?

It almost feels that way, though we could never blame Mets fans for being skeptical.

Here’s what we know: After several offseasons where the Mets were barely a blip on the Hot Stove radar, new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has made up for lost time this winter. More significantly, he’s digging deep into the cash register and spending money the organization has seemingly tried to convince fans it didn’t have.

Given that this is the Mets, I suspect that the answer to these questions will make Betteridge proud….

The Mets have signed Jew Lowrie for $2/20. Good deal. Not sure what this means for the roster. Can't be good for Frazier.

Spending money to acquire good players is the new market inefficiency.

Boy this would be an embarrassing typo if I were a gentile.

If they keep playing good players, how is Tim Tebow supposed to make this team?

I get not wanting to end up in a repeat of last year's issues with roster depth (I mean truly horrific levels of desperation all around--catcher, infield, outfield....Rivera missed more time than expected though and Cecchini ended up gone the whole season) but at the same time, it seems like you hit diminishing returns spending where you already have competent players. Alonso of course is no sure thing, and there's a case to be made that getting him some seasoning at a real AAA hitting environment is warranted given his performance at Vegas (yay moving to Syracuse--Alonso's ISO at Vegas was matched by uberprospect Bryce Brentz), but barring a deal that gets Frazier off the roster, the infield is overcrowded with dudes who have legit cases for playing time. Frazier, Lowrie, and Cano are all established vets who I'm guessing aren't OK with bench roles. McNeil's performance last year justifies a starting role this year. Rosario's the only real SS on the club (Lowrie doesn't play there any more--so this signing doesn't even give them a backup SS). Rivera lost a year to surgery last year, but has done nothing but hit in his time with the Mets, definitely the guy I thought would step in to the Flores role (minus the power). And Davis needs to play regularly in the majors at some point, nothing left to prove at AAA. On top of that, for all the spending, they still don't have a lefty out of the pen *or* a CF who can be counted on. Broxton's a nice guy to take a flyer on, but they gave up a good but to get him. Cespedes is essentially a non-entity in 2019 according to Minaya. So the flurry is a bit dizzying and confusing at this stage in the offseason, we'll see where the roster's at once April comes around.

Might be some motivation here.
