His build can generously be described as “sturdy” and less generously described as “stubby,” all squat and densely packed. Astudillo is 5’ 9” and 225 pounds…
In 20 major league games, Astudillo has been behind the plate scarcely half the time. Otherwise? He’s filled in at second base, third base, left field, and he’s even done a brief stint in center. And, oh, yes, he made a pitching appearance, too…
But there’s something quite remarkable about what he’s done on this path. Astudillo, at every single level, has maintained a weirdly intense approach to plate discipline. He does not walk, and he does not strike out. He has never wavered in that austerity. As baseball becomes increasingly centered on the three true outcomes, Astudillo seeks his truth elsewhere.

1. PreservedFish Posted: September 19, 2018 at 02:30 PM (#5747512)Love him. Although the first name is a bit much. What's with all these names that look like typos?
Willson Contreras, Willians Astudollo, Welington Castillo. And they're all catchers. Bizarre.
Jaff Decker's name both is and isn't a typo. He's named after a family friend by the name of "Jaff"... who was supposed to be "Jeff" until they made an error on the birth certificate.
I was sure that "Amed" Rosario was a typo the first time I saw it.
Huh, didn't know that.
Well, one of them actually is a typo.
Yeah, but it you asked anyone who didn't know the names to guess which one, my typo would be the 4th guess :-)
I'd bet 5'7" & 250, at least. A shorter, stubbier, squatter John Kruk. A hero for non-athletes everywhere.
In nearly 3,000 professional plate appearances, he's struck out just 94 times.
I still follow him, but it is bittersweet for him. I think he had a great shot at the Hall, but now that is pretty much a no chance thing.
He took some practice at SS the other day but it was probably just to prepare for the shift
This guy is great. And now I know why all of a sudden people were seemingly posting pictures of Bartolo Colon during his brief stint with the Twins.
Is it misspelled or mispronounced?
If it was pronounced "Chooown" like Joan, the spelling would be perfect.
"Dwigt?"
"He probably did a find and replace for Dwight, but it obviously missed this one."
"own" is pronounced exactly like Joan. But Ch-own, could be pronounced like clown. The extras o's indicate the long o.
Or they might indicate that it sounds like "Choo-(Cl)own".
Why not write "Choan"?
This is why we need to use the International Phonetic Alphabet whenever possible.
That works too.

Well, if I knew that existed, I might.
My great aunt Jean was legally Helen, b/c the midwife was drunk and put down her sister's name.
That said, my jaw literally dropped the morning I learned that he'd cameo-d in center the night before; that should NEVER happen.
Astudillo was on this morning's Sportscenter Not-Top 10 plays, for a play that looked like it could very easily have also been in the Top 10. He fielded a bunt and threw out the lead runner at third while diving forward. But I guess because he's fat and kind of landed face-first, they added a funny sound effect and put it in the Not-Top 10.
