Willie who? TBS botches another Hall of Famer’s name

Gurt Cowdy never would have stood for this!

ue

Dear TBS, we get that you’re still relatively new to this whole Major League Baseball postseason broadcasting thing. But try to get the names of the game’s greatest players right.

The network that brought you Carl Ripken Jr. — while Ripken was calling the game on TBS! — added a new gaffe to the mix. Meet Willie Mayes, one of the few players to play in the postseason as a 20-year-old and in his 40s.

Thanks to Butch.

Tee hee.

Sheesh, these are typos. Standard production errors. It's pretty sloppy for national TV but it's not really an affront to the game's history or any BS like that.

What's the big deal? That's probably how Mays himself writes it about every third or fourth time at his book signings.

They meant Willie Mays Hayes.

This doesn't jive with the graphic. Murray was 23 and Rickey 22 when they first played in the postseason.

This would be even better if the graphic was a picture of Billy Mays. Also, I assume the graphics person is either someone's nephew or a really, really hot chick.

Yeah, Billy Mays, Bill Murray and saxophonist Joe Henderson.

I've always been fond of Cal Ripkin, Jr. and Mark McGuire.

Yeah, the graphic actually noted players who first played in the postseason under 24 and also played in the postsason over 40. But you can read all about this guy's hilarious snafu in my blog item devoted to it.

Will Minor League Guy make an appearance in the NLCS?

I noticed too. The silence from the booth as they internally debated whether to mention the typo was priceless. Sadly, no one had the stones.

That was an embarrassment and hopefully that gfx PA was fired from FS Midwest. Not to mention "Minor League Guy" is now one of the best 3 prospects in the sport.

I dunno, as a one time thing I think it's kind of a hoot, not to mention that MLG will always have something unique about himself to be able to tell his grandkids. You've gotta leave room for a little spontaneity among the drudges, although in this case he should have definitely been warned not to do it again.

Firing someone over that alone would be grossly overreacting.

17. Wasn't that a preseason game? I kinda figure if he's not in the regular season media guide I'm not too surprised a tech missed his name, and certainly can't work up any fervor over it.

I think he over-relied on Andrew Jones.

Funny thing is, if one of the Cardinal position players does get hurt in the NLCS, he actually MIGHT make an appearance as he would be the best option - but they'd probably go with Ryan Jackson instead.

Pulling one's Gary Pettis in public is a sure way to get arrested.

Nothing to say other than I am psyched to see Joe Henderson make it on to BBTF. He's one of my all-time favorites.
