WINTER MEETINGS DAY 3 CHATTER

Will the Mystery Team be revealed?
Will Greinke finally sign?
Will there be a trade that busts a block?
Will the Opryland be revealed to actually be a TARDIS?

Only time will tell…

3 and 20 for Scutaro, huh? Wow.
   2. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: December 05, 2012 at 09:42 AM (#4317430)
Good for Marco but "wow" is the appropriate term.
   3. Gamingboy Posted: December 05, 2012 at 12:11 PM (#4317589)
Wonder how much of that is a "Thank You" for the postseason?
   4. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: December 05, 2012 at 12:20 PM (#4317598)
I like the Giants' thinking this offseason: "Well, we won the World Series with the team we had. Let's just re-sign everyone!"
   5. Bourbon Samurai Posted: December 05, 2012 at 12:40 PM (#4317624)
Worked last time they did it! Atleas, Aubrey Huff didn't keep them from winning again two years later.
   6. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: December 05, 2012 at 12:56 PM (#4317656)
Rays, Rangers, Diamondbacks, and Indians are talking a four-way trade. Man I hope this goes down.
   7. JJ1986 Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:01 PM (#4317666)
I would guess Shields to Texas, Holland to Cleveland, Cabrera to Arizona and Upton to Tampa. Plus prospects.

That trade goes to 11!
   9. dr. scott Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:26 PM (#4317718)
Wow, seats at AT&T park are going to be really expensive the first part of next season huh...

If they can stay in the race they will be expensive the whole season...

does anyone else offer Marco even half that? i thought the best he could do would be 1 6 with maybe some options. I guess without thong master Huff someone needs to be the overpaid old guy. that being said... good for Marco!

edit: Also, If the giants can pull a right fielder out of their a$$, they have a good shot at the post season agian.
   10. Greg K Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:40 PM (#4317731)
Jason Grilli's agent is Gary Sheffield?

Huh.
   11. Sweatpants Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:47 PM (#4317739)
I logged in just to say that. I had no idea that he was doing that now, and for some reason I find it incredibly awesome.
   12. Honkie Kong Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:50 PM (#4317748)
There was an article a month ago on Sheffield and his post career moves. Fun article. Good read. Got no link to post right now
   13. JJ1986 Posted: December 05, 2012 at 01:52 PM (#4317751)
Even weirder, Yuniesky Betancourt's agent is Alex S. Gonzalez.
   14. Gamingboy Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:03 PM (#4317767)
There was a rumor earlier of Morneau to Orioles for pitching prospects.
   15. DL from MN Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:05 PM (#4317769)
If the giants can pull a right fielder out of their a$$

Josh Willingham for Panik and Okert? I have no idea if that's fair or not but Josh Willingham might look really nice to teams after a) the other outfielders sign and b) their budget maxes out
   16. JJ1986 Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:11 PM (#4317773)
They're going to be paying Pence an awful lot of money. I can't imagine he doesn't start.
   17. zonk Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:24 PM (#4317799)
Jason Grilli's agent is Gary Sheffield?

Huh.

Is he going to tank Grilli's contract because Grilli sucks and he wants to represent someone better?
   18. Ivan Grushenko of Hong Kong Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:32 PM (#4317806)
I would guess Shields to Texas, Holland to Cleveland, Cabrera to Arizona and Upton to Tampa. Plus prospects.

Arizona seems to really be getting screwed there. Upton for Cabrera? Why wouldn't Cleveland just take that instead of Holland? OTOH, Texas is making out like bandits.
   19. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:37 PM (#4317816)
Jeff Keppinger to the White Sox. Roto is reporting Upton is who TEXAS wants.
   20. Gamingboy Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:37 PM (#4317817)
The Orioles have signed Nate McLouth. Look out, Yankees, because McLouth is back!
   21. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:42 PM (#4317825)
I would guess Stephen Vogt to Texas, Wilmer Font to Arizona, Joe Paterson to Cleveland, and Cord Phelps and Tim Fedroff to Tampa. Based purely on how disappointed the assembled ranks of media would be.
   22. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:44 PM (#4317827)
Wil Nieves re-ups with Arizona.
   23. eddieot Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:48 PM (#4317833)
Sheffield also reps Josh Banks.
   24. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: December 05, 2012 at 02:49 PM (#4317835)
Gary Sheffield is an agent? What's next, we find out Raul Mondesi is a congressman?

Only interesting insofar as it narrows the Yankees' options at 3B even further. Can't wait to see what they're going to pull out of their hats here.
   26. Greg K Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:02 PM (#4317855)
For some reason I find the mlbtraderumors headline "Five teams have genuine interest in Hannahan" amusing.

As if they have to clarify that these teams aren't looking to have him play 3B for them ironically.
   27. Greg K Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:07 PM (#4317861)
Though those teams could be just aiming to get off to a good start.

On opening days Hannahan is 7 for 15 with 3 home runs.

Youkilis makes sense: They can offer a bigger 1-year deal than anyone else without affecting their luxury tax implications for 2014. He gets a chance to prove his health and get a better multi-year deal next offseason.
   30. AROM Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:15 PM (#4317873)

I had to look it up to determine that you're talking about the shortstop who came up 4 years before the other one, playing for the Blue Jays.

His full name is Alexander Scott Gonzalez.

The other had no middle name (at least according to bbref) but a very memorable nickname. He is:

Alexander Sea Bass Gonzalez. Making them easy to confuse even with middle initials.

   31. Greg K Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:19 PM (#4317878)
My handy way of telling them apart...one of them had a cameo on the Newsroom and one didn't.
   32. Greg K Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:21 PM (#4317879)
Bay to Seattle reported as a done deal.
   33. JJ1986 Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:22 PM (#4317880)
I remember it because the Blue Jay was in the shirtless shortstops picture, so S is for Shirtless.

*sigh*

My Mariners sure have a long way to go, don't they.

Well, hopefully they can complete a King Felix extension this winter. That'll make me cheer up.

I'd love to see it, if only because it would carry on the rich tradition of Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, and Johnny Damon.
   37. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:39 PM (#4317905)
Eric Chavez to the D-Backs.
   38. Dock Ellis on Acid Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:41 PM (#4317910)
1/3 for Chavez. Will he be the starter? I'm a little surprised he didn't stay with the Yankees.
   39. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:43 PM (#4317917)
The Yanks are supposed to be in on Schierholtz, too. Why all the frugality this winter?
   40. Jose Is The Most Absurd Thing on the Site Posted: December 05, 2012 at 03:49 PM (#4317936)
Eric Hinske and Eric Chavez in the same place? That's going to be confusing for me.

Assuming the Phils break out of their off season lethargy, I'd think they'd give Youk 2 years. They are desperate for any kind of RH power and they think Cody Asche will be ready in 2014; it would make sense to have a vet around who could spell the lefty hitter on occasion as well as fill in for Howard.

Chavez for 1/3 as a parttimer for the Phils could have led to a cheap, if meh, 3B combo with Kevin Frandsen, leaving money for 2 OFs and a setup man.

Philly makes sense, but if the Yankees offer, say, 1 year at $13m, would they be able to offer a 2-year deal that makes it work his while?

One of them started with the Blue Jays and one started with the Marlins. The Blue Jays one came first and is from Miami. The Marlins one came second and is from Venezuela. The second one is Sea Bass. Apparently he got the nickname from Marlins legend Kevin Millar.

This is all why we badly need a constitutional amendment banning the combination of "Alex" and "Gonzalez"... I believe the Rangers have another one toiling somewhere in the bowels of their farm system who also happens to be a pseudo-crappy SS.

EDIT: Yup - though, he seems to be a 20 yo still struggling to get out of the frontier league, so we may be spared him... According to BB-REF, the Orioles drafted one in the 11th round of the 2010 draft, but it would appear that he didn't sign... so the amendment is still needed.
   48. Random Transaction Generator Posted: December 05, 2012 at 04:14 PM (#4317974)
The fun part about all this:

Alex S. Gonzalez played with the Jays and a Florida team.
Alex "Sea Bass" Gonzalez played with the Jays and a Florida team.
Kevin Millar played for both the Jays and a Florida team.

(Sadly, he did not play with Alex S. at any time.)

That's okay. He's from...huh...Venezuela.

The one that played in the Boston minor league system (2005) was from...huh...Miami.
And Baltimore drafted ANOTHER one in 2010, but he hasn't played yet.

Probably not. Do the Yanks have enough room to offer him 13 though? I thought they were tight against the cap.

Mine is: one of them kicked a routine double play ball to cost the Cubs the 2003 pennant, and the other got a World Series ring as a result.

   56. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: December 05, 2012 at 10:53 PM (#4318294)
Theo Epstein knows how much the Cubs fans love stopgaps, so he's added Nate Schierholtz for 1 year and $2.25M.

Would have liked to see him stay with the Phils. Would he have gotten that much in arbitration?!?
   57. Bruce Markusen Posted: December 05, 2012 at 10:58 PM (#4318298)
All I've got to say is this: what a dud of a winter meetings so far. There hasn't been a significant trade of any real substance. (I'm sorry, but Yuniel Escobar doesn't cut it.)

The biggest free agent signings have been Napoli and Victorino, but they're hardly blockbuster signings. The two big prizes--Hamilton and Greinke--remain unsigned.

Make a big move, somebody.
   58. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: December 05, 2012 at 11:02 PM (#4318299)
No blockbuster signings? Did you miss Mike Zagurski joining the Pirates?!?
   59. zonk Posted: December 05, 2012 at 11:10 PM (#4318301)
I'm perfectly fine adding Schierholtz, but I'm not sure I see where he fits... Assuming Brett Jackson is going to be given a chance to K 300 times in CF and absent Soriano/DeJesus being moved -- there's already Campana and Sappelt to be the 4th/5th OFers.

I suppose Nate can hit - and neither of them can -- so that's something, but both Campana and Sappelt are 26 and cheap (though, pretty sure both have options left).

   60. Gamingboy Posted: December 06, 2012 at 12:30 AM (#4318351)
I blame Greinke and Hamilton. They are holding the whole thing up.

There's no way that the Royals would consider trading Wil Myers AND another prospect for James Shields, right?

There's no way that the Royals would consider trading Wil Myers AND another prospect for James Shields, right?

In last week's Heyman article that was posted, I predicted a Shields for Myers + Kyle Smith trade.

To me, at least, it has seemed like the writing is on the wall that Shields is Dayton Moore's white whale. Pretty sure Friedman knows it and is taking advantage of that to get the maximum return. It doesn't hurt that the writing seems to be on the wall that Dayton Moore's job seems to be dependent on a a big boost in the standings in 2013. Any GM should be trying to exploit the fact that KC is going to be willing to pay more than it should in future talent to get MLB ready talent.

I think there is a slight risk that KC opts for a FA pitcher instead, but if KC lands a pitcher via trade, I'd expect more than just Myers to be the price that is paid. (Note, I think that is a massive overpay; I simply think it will happen.)

And I've been posting this in the Royals threads for the past couple of weeks but I'm pretty convinced that Dayton Moore believes that Wil Myers is blocked at the MLB level. He can't play DH because you've got Billy Butler there. He really isn't suited for CF. And the corner OF spots are already filled with Gordon and Frenchy. I think this trade would be a lot less likely if Moore thought he had a spot in the lineup to give to Wil Myers.

I weep that Wil Myers could be seen as blocked by Jeff Francoeur. My daughter is barely blocked by Jeff Francoeur.
   64. Yeaarrgghhhh Posted: December 06, 2012 at 11:01 AM (#4318503)
Shields had a weird season. His K and BB rates were excellent, he gave up fewer hits than IP, and he a good HR rate, and yet he still had a 108 ERA+. Did the bullpen allow a lot of inherited runners to score?

Anyway, Shields is a good pitcher, but unless they sign him to an extension, trading Myers for him would be really, really dumb.

I interpreted the rumors (or maybe just assumed) that it would be Shields plus something for Myers; not the other way around.
