With Kiermaier sidelined into July, time for Rays to make some big moves

A proponent of tanking.

Even if they still had Kiermayer there is no reason they shouldn't be exploring the trade possibilities mentioned in the piece. My issue with the "blow it up" idea is that teams should just take the best offer. If the Mets are willing to give something good for Wilson Ramos or any team is willing to give solid prospects for Alex Colome, of course they should do it. Any team should make a trade that improves their lot in life whether for this year or the long term. I have no problem with that, not all 30 teams should be expected to try and compete every year but just getting rid of good players (hello Mr. Jeter) to save money isn't making the team better.

Agree. There's a difference between making good baseball trades of present value for future value, and just trading everyone who makes any money, for whatever you can get.

Nobody will be buying until the end of May at the soonest, unless a team suffers multiple season-ending injuries before then.

Archer is really their only trade chit at the moment. Kinda ridiculously, it's still just 3/$27 left after this year. Pretty much any team would be happy to pick him up now.

Colome might have value later in the season but he's off to an awful start, his track record isn't particularly strong, he doesn't K many for a reliever and he's currently walking the ballpark. He does have two years of arb left but, if he does turn it around and stays a closer, those would probably cost his new team about $16 M total.

Ramos has been a good C but he was hurt most of last year and was somewhere between replacement-level and OK when he did play last year (0.1 bWAR but that's mainly a terrible Rfield which I trust even less for Cs). And he's off to a terrible start this year. Gomez is also doing terribly.

Sure, there are bits and pieces for which they could probably easily find a home but those bits and pieces won't bring talent back.

And it's early yet but Dickerson has a 158 OPS+, Odorizzi has a 188 ERA+ (but not the peripherals) and Longoria has been terrible while Arroyo has been terrible at AAA (probably getting his clock reset).

The Mets would be happy to rid you of this nuisance...

At the price of ...???

The question is not whether Ramos is of interest to other teams but whether the Rays can get anything to build for the future in exchange and how much salary do they have to eat to do that (Ramos is at $8.5 M for this year). There's no point (other than saving money) for the Rays to trade Ramos for the sake of trading him. So what prospect are you willing to give up for Ramos? The Mets don't have one in the top 100 at mlb.com, Sickels puts the two highest guys at B/B+ so if I'm Tampa, it costs one of those guys and maybe a lower tier guy.
