With Rhys Hoskins out, not too soon for Phillies to think about trading for a hitter

Trading for Machado now wouldn’t guarantee the Phillies could re-sign him in the offseason. It can’t hurt, though. If he feels comfortable here — and he’s already acquainted with several team officials, including general manager Matt Klentak and farm director Joe Jordan — he might be more inclined to stay. And there’s no doubt Machado would boost the Phillies’ chances of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

Other hitters will be available, too. Third basemen Josh Donaldson (Blue Jays) and Mike Moustakas (Royals) could be on the move. And if the Orioles really do blow it up, they could trade face-of-the-franchise center fielder Adam Jones, who will be eligible for free agency at season’s end.

Hoskins has a broken face.

Hoskins injury helps give more playing time to the other outfielders by the Santana signing, notably Nick Williams. They also called up Dylan Cozens, so corner/outfield bats aren't a huge need. What they need right now is a infielder/utilityman who can hit and play short. Unsure when Crawford is back, but right now, Freddy Galvis is outhitting all the Phillies SS except Florimon. That's bad.

Kingery is looking very much overmatched at the plate and short, and Valentin is last guy on the bench

Hey Manny, why did you sign with Philly?

Because farm director Joe Jordan and I chatted once at an O's function. Turns out he was somewhere in the O's minor-league admin when I was in the minors.

Anyway, Rhys Hoskins' injury should have pretty much no bearing on when and whether the Phils should trade for Machado. If they could have concluded a "fair" trade for Machado last week, they should have done it.
