Wong would rather be traded than platoon at second base

Second baseman Kolten Wong expressed confusion and frustration Sunday about the news that the Cardinals are considering a platoon approach at Wong’s position to start the regular season.

“You know what, that’s out of my control,” Wong said before the Cardinals played the Marlins in a Grapefruit League game at Roger Dean Stadium. “I was told that I was going to be the starting second baseman. If that’s what they want to do, then that’s their decision. The thing with me, and my frustrations is that, I think when you give someone a contract and you expect him to be the guy, you should have belief in that guy. It’s hard when you don’t feel that belief. But it is what it is. If that’s the case, then I’ll be ready to do what I gotta do to help the team win.”...

Wong has not requested a trade but confirmed he would rather depart if he is not going to be a regular starter in St. Louis.

“One hundred percent,” he said. “One hundred percent. I don’t want to be here wasting my time. I know what kind of player I am. If I don’t have the belief here, then I’ll go somewhere else.”

The things you can say when you have signed a $25 million contract

My big takeaway from that article is a lack of communication between management and Wong. It should be fairly easy to try to explain to him, that the team has a quality bench, players who will need to get 200-300 pa, and while he is struggling, it's a good way to get them at bats. It's not that he has a significant platoon split, but that they (Garcia/Gyorko) will benefit more from seeing left handed pitchers more.

Wong will still probably start in over 125 games this season and will have over 500 pa.

The Cardinals have Gyorko on the bench, a guy who hit 30 homeruns for them last year, they have Matt Adams on the bench, a .770 ops hitter, and Garcia is a league average player. These guys need playing time. The guys who are struggling will lose time, regardless of contract situation.

Based on the season he had last year and the other options Wong isn't speaking from strength.

I mean, I get it. There are 30 teams and Kolten Wong is one of the top 30 second basemen in baseball. "It's no fair, just trade me to one of the two or three teams who don't have any better options than me." It just....doesn't work out that way.

I think this puts him one step closer to becoming one of the Cards' bedrock guys. Telling other people how to do their job for no particular reason other than being butthurt is one Page 1 of "The Cardinal Way".

If Wond doesn't want to get platooned, he should play better. His career 92 wRC+ vs. RHP is barely acceptable. The 71 he's put up against lefties is decidely not.

He's lucky they haven't given the job to Gyorko flat out.

He can always retreat to the family ranch holdings on Mars.

Pwatooning is the Wong way to go.

I don't think offseason Buggalo wrangling is doing his baseball career any favors...

That's just Wong.
