Looking at Sportsnet's TV schedule, I'd be tempted to watch Cuba vs Japan at 5 AM next Wednesday, and the Puerto Rican pool games are all at reasonable hours.
It's semi-meaningful baseball in March, broadcast at bizarre hours. What's not to like?
Chien-Ming Wang (CT) vs. Chris Oxspring (AUS)
Masahiro Tanaka (JPN) vs. Rafael Fernandes (BRA)
Suk-Min Yoon (KOR) vs. Diegomar Markwell (NED)
Actually, those aren't that bad of match-ups..
Kyle Lohse, your country needs you!
Or, less likely but I guess possible, there's the chance that one of the previous players who turned it down has changed their mind (I seem to have read that Clayton Kershaw regrets how he didn't say yes- although if Kershaw were to join they'd have to make Holland or Gio Gonzalez a long reliever).
Actually, the bigger worry I have is that this Perez injury will make the Indians do everything-short-of-officially-and-publicly-restraining-him to keep Pestano from the WBC.
$70 on stubhub (hint: I've got an extra ticket I'm looking to move)
More than Brazil would like but fewer than you'd think.
Wang is auditioning for a MLB contract. Hope he makes it. It's been a long time since he's been healthy, but he was pretty good once.
Yeah, I just looked at their roster, they have a lot more players in pro baseball than I expected. China is really the runt of the litter in that division.
If Wang is you know.. anything close to Wang, Taiwan should do well.
Though it should be noted that interestingly, Taiwan and Korea both played poorly in exhibition games in the last couple of days. so who the hell knows. baseball on a small sample is insanely unpredictable.
*note: so am I, I am horrific at basketball.
Sure. You can always find some AAA journeyman or unsigned guy still trying to get a camp invite.
Wonder if Roger Clemens is is in game shape?
Okay, different prop bet that nobody is taking: What happens more within the next three of their teams games- Barry Larkin wins or Shane Larkin losses?
And that piece on 2009 was great. Delmonico was very candid and interesting.
Jose, I get the feeling that the naysayers don't actually watch the WBC, so they just assume that their assumptions are reality, when they aren't.
You know a call is bad when a batter has to be restrained from attacking the umpire by his first base coach in the first inning of the first game of an international tournament.
I love how the broadcast didn't even show a replay or mention that it looked like a bad call.
Also, that's not how I've heard Cheh-Suan Lin's name pronounced.
I don't know. It's very much a possibility that this is a pool feed that where the replay isn't available unless whoever is manning the control room decides to use it.
Taichung International Ballpark. It looks nice, I'm liking those retractable shades that can cover people in the upper-deck if it rains but can go back if it's not raining or something.
The stadium is really nice. What cities would get major league franchises if there was an Asian League? That's obviously crazy, the NBP and KBO would pitch a fit even with several of their franchises becoming MLB teams, and the interleague travel would be brutal even absent the 4th Latin/South American team needed to balance things, but I think there's enough baseball crazy places with high enough incomes to make it doable.
Agreed. Still a very blown call, but not as bad as I thought it was.
Unsurprisingly this early in the spring Oxspring seems to be a bit inconsistent with the curve so far. It seems like it can be a very good pitch though.
I cringed when I heard Snelling described as "willing to run through a brick wall". Yeah, that worked out well for him.
You were having Snelling face Wang, of course one of them would get hurt.
What's that the Taiwanese crowd is chanting? Is it the whole "Add Fuel" thing that the Chinese chanted back during the '08 Olympics?
he's still getting DP at a crazy rate though
edited for correct scoring
Getting upset about an injury to Snelling is also so 2006. I can't believe that he managed to get hurt in one ############# plate appearance. It's like someone cancelled Christmas.
The only chant I can really think of is "Yankees Suck", and that's not realyl a chant, more like a coordinated yell.
Does "let's go Blue Jays! clap clap clapclapclap" count? Maybe "M-V-P, M-V-P".
"hit , hit , homerun"
or "xxx, xxx, homerun" something like that
Okay, those too, but they all lack the complexity that Asia has. America hasn't had stuff like that since the Royal Rooters of the early 1900s
I was about to do the same thing, except replace 'ice cream' with 'frozen chicken burger'. I need something to take my mind off Snelling's Charlie Brown or Sisyphus-like existence.
