hmmm.. Hughes was probably safe there
   102. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:42 AM (#4378884)
too bad it's a DH rule game, or maybe they could get Hong Chih Kuo there there ;)

I didn't get the Hong Chih Kuo bat flip until I saw this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=8EOotZPM4x4. And then I was amazed.

Wang is pitching well.
   103. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:43 AM (#4378885)
I thought Hughes was safe. The first baseman really sold it well though.
   104. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:44 AM (#4378886)
Barksdale is neighborhood playing it tonight.
   105. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:45 AM (#4378887)
Ah, the WBC, where one finds out that the interesting pitcher one would like to see more of washed out of the Reds organization in 2007 and has been kicking around the European leagues since.
   106. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:45 AM (#4378888)
Wang's only at 38 pitches? He can go 6! I'd imagine that's pretty huge in the pool round.
   107. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:47 AM (#4378889)

Yeah, it is. Although if the Taiwanese get a large enough lead they might be able to pull him so he can play in a future game this round.
   108. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:49 AM (#4378890)
Juuuuuuust a bit outside.
   109. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:50 AM (#4378891)
I'm not being dazzled by the umps tonight.
   110. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:52 AM (#4378893)
I feel both jealous of and bad for the baby in a bright blue 'fro wig.
   111. Jay Seaver Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:53 AM (#4378894)
Aw, Lin's not in the Red Sox system any more? I really wanted to see more of him last year, just because he at least looked like he could play center.
   112. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:53 AM (#4378895)
Adamson has done well in right. I don't think Snelling would have done that well.
   113. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:53 AM (#4378897)
If Australia can get Wang out of there soon somehow they are hanging around enough to have a shot. Taiwan has let them off the hook a couple of times, this game should be out of sight already.
   114. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:56 AM (#4378898)
Working the count would help.
   115. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:56 AM (#4378899)
Wang can throw 11 more pitches and pitch again this round, otherwise he's done. He can wait a day and pitch again, but would only have 15 pitches after that. I'd say you take him as long as possible, Australia isn't a bad team and you want to bank wins in a pool that has 4 legitimate contenders.
   116. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:57 AM (#4378900)
Anyone know what makes Mike Walker eligible for Team Australia? I just realized he's the one Brewer I couldn't account for on WBC rosters.
   117. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:57 AM (#4378901)
That 1b needs glasses.
   118. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:58 AM (#4378902)
I'm sure Wang impressed the scouts by not injuring himself covering first. Way to go.

Not really, they have Hong Chih Kuo as their closer, of course Kuo might pull a Snelling too though.. but if he doesn't he's basically unhittable.

Aw, Lin's not in the Red Sox system any more? I really wanted to see more of him last year, just because he at least looked like he could play center.

His plate discipline isn't enough, though even then he probably should have a job as a 4th OF that can steal bases
   120. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 01:59 AM (#4378904)
Justin Huber! He was going to be a great Met!
   121. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:00 AM (#4378905)
Wow, Kuo is on that roster. He washed out of Iowa this year--Iowa! the team with all the injured players that kept getting poached by the Big Cubs--and I didn't expect him back anywhere.
   122. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:00 AM (#4378906)

well he only injures himself if he's actually running on the line ;)

Wang doesn't have the velocity to be a major league starter anymore. Still, he's gotten a lot of ground ball.s
   124. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:01 AM (#4378908)
Good job for Walker. Let's see if he can keep that up for Huntsville this year.

Agreed.

Who the hell is manning the cameras? That's the second time they've completely misjudged a ball to RF.
   127. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:03 AM (#4378911)
probably, though it is still early spring, someone should at least take a flier on him in AAA or something to see if he can get it up in a month or two.
   128. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:04 AM (#4378912)

I'm reasonably sure it's a Taiwanese crew... but, uh... you'd think they'd be familiar with baseball.

Drinks Foster's?

   130. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:05 AM (#4378914)
Warwick Saupold. THat's an Australian name!
   131. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:06 AM (#4378915)

Right, and given who major league teams run out as their 6th/7th starters during the season he's probably worth it. But I wouldn't expect anything much from a guy throwing in the mid-80s.

BOOM! HOME RUN!
   132. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:06 AM (#4378916)
Saupold probably hasn't given up a lot of those playing in the FSL in 2012, eh?
   133. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:06 AM (#4378917)
...And that's a Taiwanese boomer.
   134. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:07 AM (#4378918)
Really, really confused by what looked like a tomahawk chop by the fans.
   135. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:07 AM (#4378919)
yeah that was terrible, the CPBL don't do that either.

Peng is one of CPBL's best pure hitter of all time, but he's a bit old and doesn't have enough power nor fielding to cut it at a higher level.
   136. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:10 AM (#4378920)
RollingWave, is there an English language site with CPBL stats?
   137. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:11 AM (#4378921)
Well, that's one way to limit the damage.
   138. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:11 AM (#4378922)
Pick-off. Huge. Especially after that double.
   139. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:12 AM (#4378923)
Warwick ain't exactly fooling anyone right now.
   140. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:13 AM (#4378924)
I wonder what Travis Blackley could have done against this lot. Probably the same thing he did today in Arizona, just with more television coverage.
   141. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:13 AM (#4378925)
Adam Bright.

I have this image in my head of him and Grant Balfour watching the game together, only Balfour threw something at the TV back during the first inning when Barksdale blew that call, so now there is a big blotch on their TV screen.
   143. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:15 AM (#4378928)
That's what's frustrating, it's not like players don't get hurt all the time in spring training, and it's not like there aren't a lot of rules in place to protect pitchers. I really hope in 4-8 years the best pitchers from each country are allowed to/feel comfortable participate/ing in the WBC.

eta: Balfour's control has been bad enough in the past that the TV might be fine.
   144. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:17 AM (#4378929)

Doubly frustrating because Balfour can't pitch for anyone right now (although he is throwing. GRANT! KNOCK IT OFF! YOU'LL GET HURT AGAIN! :ahem:)

Shush. I still wonder what would have happened if the Brewers had managed to keep him. He probably would have been awful, because it's the Brewers and the 2007 team did not get that sort of lucky.

Wang and his DPs....
   150. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:23 AM (#4378935)
3 DPs in one game. Yeah, if I'm a GM I'm calling his agent about a minor league contract.
   151. morineko Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:23 AM (#4378936)
Do you think the Twins would be interested in Wang, or were Pelfrey and Correia enough?
   152. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:24 AM (#4378937)
Not that they have had a lot of difficult chances but the Taiwanese defense has done a nice job. They've been very smooth in all these DPS.
   153. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:26 AM (#4378938)
I have to wonder if, on the MLB level, if Wang would be a good guy out of the bullpen, especially when you need a groundball.
   154. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:27 AM (#4378939)
My reading of the WBC rules says that if you start a PA with under 65 pitches you can finish the PA. If I'm correct, you let Wang go into the 6th and hope he can get through 2 batters, right?
   155. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:27 AM (#4378940)
   156. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:27 AM (#4378941)
This is awesome.

ehh, if you think that announcing is awesome you certainly haven't seen some of the older classic games where Taiwan upset either Japan or Korea, those are truly truly insane.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjLxZ-r6rP0

this was probably one of the most memoeralbe walk off game against Korea (in OT in Japan, and the stadium was packed with Taiwan and Korean fans, insane) it send Taiwan to the Olympics for the first time since 1992. the announcer sounded like they were getting a heart attack (the guy that hit that is the same as the catcher in this game)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqmEQ9QTAhs

and that was the inning before the walk off... the emotion in these games is really off the scale, I remember I was in my university library when this happened and the whole library suddenly erupted into cheer and the folks who didn't know what happen was totally dumbfounded on what suddenly everyone else was yelling in a library

(unfortunately, the emotional pitcher in this clip was also busted a few years later for.... you guessed it... gambling scandal and is now in a world of trouble.)

Also, I'm sure the Japanese accouncers probably went bat #### insane when they won the WBC.)
   157. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:28 AM (#4378942)
(post deleted since somebody finally responded to what I said)
   158. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:30 AM (#4378943)
Clarence - that is correct and I agree with the strategy.

GB - a friend and I had that exact conversation earlier tonight. If you can keep the ball on the ground and throw strikes teams need 2, maybe 3 hits to score a run against you. If you've got anything on the ball tags useful. Le a guy like that start a clean inning and he could be tough. Not clear to me that Wangs stuff is quite good enough but he seems worth a look.
   159. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:33 AM (#4378944)
Brendan Wise's 2011 ERA with Toledo: 1.90
Brendan Wise's 2012 ERA with Rochester: 5.64

Wonder which will show.
   160. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:36 AM (#4378945)
With Dening and Hughes coming up, I'd at least let Wang start the inning.
   161. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:38 AM (#4378946)
As part of the "Give Chien-Ming Wang a Job" discussion: to give a point of reference, there were 38 starting pitchers with an ERA+ below 80 last year who got more than 40 innings. 16 of those had an ERA+ below 70.

Aww, they didn't have him come back out. Taiwan needs a Moneyball manager!

eta: of course, there's probably good reasons to have your lefty reliever start the inning against 2 left handed batters.
   162. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:38 AM (#4378947)
Chien-Ming Wang is trending worldwide, apparently.
   163. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:39 AM (#4378948)
Yao-Hsun Yang (pulls out program) pitches in Japan for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawk.
   164. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:40 AM (#4378949)
Yang's a pretty good pitcher in the NPB, and should be a completely different look from Wang.

also, his brother is also on the team and playing in Japan
   165. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:43 AM (#4378950)

   167. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:45 AM (#4378952)
As Luke Hughes walks back to the dugout, he looks to first, towards his eternal nemesis: Lance Barksdale. Yes, Lance Barksdale, one day, Luke Hughes will have his revenge....
   168. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:46 AM (#4378953)
I doubt many people could hit that pitch
   169. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:46 AM (#4378954)
No more shutout.

ETA: THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T TAKE OUT THE SINKERBALLER!
   170. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:46 AM (#4378955)
Also, I should note that the gun reading on our local gun seem to be at least 3-4 mile faster than what' showing on the screen ... the announcer keep saying that Yang is sitting around 147-149 which should be over 90mph, but the screen gun says he's in the mid to upper 80s. so one of the gun is surely wrong.
   171. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:47 AM (#4378956)
Stefan Welch go boom-boom.
   172. Mess with the Meat, you get the Wad! Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:47 AM (#4378957)

   173. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:48 AM (#4378958)
nasty pitch there... but he also left one in the lefty wheel house and got burned
   174. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:49 AM (#4378959)

No, it's just because they're Australian. It's a scrappy country.

I think there many be a cubs minor leaguer on Taiwan's roster

Hung-Wen Chen is in the Cubs organization.

I'm packing for a flight but did Joe Magrane just name drop The Weathergirls?

I loved the deathly silence that fell over the crowd on the Australia homer. Great atmosphere at this game.
   178. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:58 AM (#4378964)
it is unforutnate the the US don't care as much about this, but for non US country / team pretty much every one cares a ton about the WBC.. I suppose if the US lose a few more time they probably will start to care more.
   179. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 02:58 AM (#4378965)
Ryan Rowland-Smith being used now? I'd have thought they'd save him for a start...
   180. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 03:01 AM (#4378966)
The US already cares a lot more than they did in 2006, a lot of US players pushed their teammates to play in 2009 after the early exit of the 2006 team. By the time we get to 2021 it'll be like the US in Olympic basketball, nothing less than winning will be enough. And it won't be that easy, because there's a lot more variability in baseball than basketball and there's at least 5-6 challengers to the US for the baseball throne even right now.

Oppa WBC Style!

   184. RollingWave Posted: March 02, 2013 at 03:08 AM (#4378971)
ok, the KM and Mile gun is clearly off by a lot, and it's probably the miles gun that's wrong, there's no way Kou's pitch is not 90mph just from looking at it or how the hitters are reacting
   185. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 03:09 AM (#4378972)

   189. The Clarence Thomas of BBTF (scott) Posted: March 02, 2013 at 03:13 AM (#4378977)
If the MPH gun is off by a few MPH that is really good news for Wang. If he's in the high 80s, he could definitely be a spot starter for about half the teams in the majors.

Jeteresque!

Curiosity factor, and I want to see Masahiro Tanaka. They say he's the next in line of Japanese pitchers introduced by the WBC that then jump to the USA.

Seriously. I can manage this for a few weeks every year or so, for major sports tournaments like the WBC, Olympics, and World Cup. And the WBC doesn't even count, considering that in less than a week everything will be in my time zone.

I always tried to throw sidearm in little league. Unfortunately I was really shitty at it.

OK, so it's not a tomahawk chop, just a general thunderstick chop. It makes a lot more sense listening to the cadence of the chant.
   195. Gamingboy Posted: March 02, 2013 at 03:24 AM (#4378983)
Rollingwave, just out of curiosity, what would you say the level of play in CPBL is? A-ball level? High-A? AA?

Hard to say, a lot of folks say it's like high A, I guess between that to AA, the best players are AAAA players like Chen Chin Feng and Hu Jin Long so I guess that is about right. the varation can be big, the all star team probably would be more like a AAA or AAAA team. but there's not enough of them.

Mutombo is just one of these people that makes me happy to see. He could read the news and I'd smile all the way through his report on infant mortality rates in third world nations.
