World Series Game 2 OMNICHATTER

Well, after Justin Verlander’s dominating 14-strikeout complete game shutout tonig—- sorry, where did I put it.. oh, here it is: After Pablo Sandoval’s 3-HR performance, the Giants lead 1-0. Can the Tigers tie it back up? Will Madison Bumgarner recover from earlier to make this 2-0? Will we discuss various pop cultural mainstays? Only time will tell…

Detroit Tigers (Fister) @ San Francisco Giants (Bumgarner). 8 PM. FOX.

Good thing they put on Sandoval for no reason. Now the bases are loaded!

Oh god, It's GIDP time for Pence.

#271 - How do you get from rail-thin Ichiro, a right fielder, to Pablo Sandoval, a portly third baseman? Maybe I'm not drunk enough to get it?

In addition to 299, it's about batting approach, they both swing at (and make contact with) pretty much any pitch.

They showed it at least once before. HUGE upgrade over the playlist commercial.

Quite, even though it's still not really demonstrating a genuine use for the phone-touching feature.

Not sure I like either the IBB here or the Blanco bunt with Crawford/PH coming up. The bunt worked,

What's the WPA for the IBB here? +0.06 according to Fan Graphs. With the MVP up, probably more like 0.1

Pence is going to strike out. Grrr
   309. Baldrick Posted: October 25, 2012 at 10:57 PM (#4283831)
Well, actually, since Pence is basically just guaranteed to K, he can't GIDP I guess.

As a 30+ year Giants fan, I strongly expect Pence hits into a DP here. 50-50 it scores a run.

boy i hate intentional walks

ken macha loved the ibb. by 3/4 of his first season in milwaukee i had enough examples of these stupid walks blowing up in the team's face i could run a movie an hour long of scene after scene of games frittered away

that was my version of h8ll

I don't remember seeing a catcher line up as far outside as Laird is here.
   316. fra paolo Posted: October 25, 2012 at 10:59 PM (#4283839)
The worst thing is that if the Tigers get out of this, they could wind up in the top of the 9th with two out, a runner in scoring position and Don Kelly at the plate.
   317. franoscar Posted: October 25, 2012 at 10:59 PM (#4283840)
I believe they did tone down the anti-semitism for the movie -- at least I don't remember that character. I imagine Kinsella just had no clue about the Negro Leagues.

You and me both, Harveys. You've been watching baseball a lot longer than me. Is this just a recent manager fetish like I feel like it is or has it gone on pretty much forever?

They actually do. A few years so an MLB rep went into the Red Sox dugout to make sure Francona was seeing his jersey in the middle of an inning. Tito almost strangled the guy. In April, September and October games most of the player swear some kind of jacket or sweatshirt too.

nah, goes back forever. some managers were just crazy to walk guys. you used to see guys walk guys back to back to load the bases on purpose to set up 'a force at every base'. this was deemed a good idea

that seems to have died as a good idea.

   335. zenbitz Posted: October 25, 2012 at 11:04 PM (#4283862)
Someone - I think a McCoveyChronicles denizen named Sandoval "Fat Ichiro" (IIRC this was right around the time he was named Kung Fu Panda) in 2009 - when he seemed to hit everything within reach for a single. Then he hit 8 HRs in June and the Slap hitter meme kinda died. It was a great name though.

#306 - I believe the intended use for the Near-Field Communications modem is point-of-sale transactions. Don't know why they couldn't just show somebody buying a bunch of stuff at Target or something, come to think of it. Maybe they want to wait for some big name retailer to commit to upgrading before they'll show it?

#314 - Harveys, the cool kids use the numeral 3 to replace E, as in h3ll. If you've had enough gin you might not even notice.

Meanwhile, Buster Posey will be a 41-year-old in his final season, Pablo Sandoval will be running a Panda sanctuary in his native Venezuela (don't ask how he got the pandas), Sergio Romo will be the host of a "Candid Camera" show on MLB Network 2 and Brian Wilson, will, of course, be the first bearded President since Benjamin Harrison.

Quintin Berry AND Don Kelly are batting in the 9th inning? Good luck "getting something started".

@365 - He's been better than Wilson for a few years now. It was actually very interesting to see how Bochy didn't use him exclusively in the 9th until September... which I thought was pretty forward non-closer mania for a big league manager.

#314: If I had a dime for every time I screamed at the TV during '09 to the effect of "McClung can walk this guy on his own, you don't need to tell him to do it" I'd have...10 cents. But I'd have 80 cents more off the times he made Villanueva do it, same deal. 6 of the 15 walks Mark DiFelice issued in 2009 were intentional, by the way.

#374: Postseason commercial breaks are longer. Too much nonsense. Also, re the Giants in general this postseason, too many runs cause longer games.

We need RMc to pop in and tell us this series is over.

No need. The only way to make this a series again is for the Tigers to sweep three games in Detroit, and that ain't happening. More likely is a four-game sweep by the Giants.

Really, guys? You score three times in a game with JV on the mound and lose? You hold them to two runs in game two, and lose again, because you can't buy a f#cking hit off Madison Bumgarner? Really?

Not even going to try? Really?

Oh, well. I'm 47 now; I figure it's even money I live long enough to see Detroit in another World Series. (Hint: this team won't be back. They've already used their "Get Lucky And Make The World Series" card.)

Maybe someday.

   391. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: October 26, 2012 at 12:53 PM (#4284315)
The whole difference in this game might've been that the Tigers never learned a proper slide:
If Fielder stays to the outside of home plate he's probably safe. (seriously, WTF?)
If Infante slides straight into second he's probably safe. (SERIOUSLY, WTF?)
There's two outs + one run back, in a tight game. Jesus, guys. FUNDAMENTALS.
