Will Darvish meet Gurriel on the field and have a good cry like Jim Joyce and Armando Gallaraga?

HOW WILL DAVE ROBERTS FOLLOW MANAGEMENT'S PLAN TO DEPLETE THE BULLPEN TONIGHT??

Should be interesting, but this is the game I'll skip entirely, even on tape delay.

I'll watch a condensed version already knowing the outcome. 2-2 would set up at least a pair of amazing games.

HOW WILL DAVE ROBERTS FOLLOW MANAGEMENT'S PLAN TO DEPLETE THE BULLPEN TONIGHT??

It would be really something if in the era of expanded bullpens, we see a position player pitch in the World Series.

Really close series so far. One run differential, Dodgers relievers have given up four runs, Astros three.

How many series have gone seven games with that differential after three?
   6. Bote Man Posted: October 28, 2017 at 05:20 PM (#5564417)
First pitch can't come soon enough! I'm running out of booze.

Depending on which rumor monger you follow, Dave Martinez either is the new manager of the Nationals, will be the new manager of the Nationals, or not even in the running to be the new manager of the Nationals.

Back to btf after some computer troubles. My first thought is to declare game 2 of the world series the official beginning of a new baseball era:

The Home Run Derby Era

Obviously the era began months ago but weds game was the official debut.

Seriously i do find the current hr trend to be disturbing albeit not yet an aesthetic nitemare

The thing with trends is they represent outcomes whose rates are still in flux both pitchers and hitters continue to go for strikeouts and hrs respectly. My feeling is that when games are close or teams are evenly matched these trends will become even more exaggerated. Sort of like the way a lot of world series games in the 60s became even more exagerated version of the dead ball era

May be i am wrong just a hunch but i dont see the hr barrage ending this week
   9. Sunday silence Posted: October 28, 2017 at 06:51 PM (#5564449)
Thought no 2

Why didnt roberts do the double switch in game 2 inn 8 with grandal? So jansen goes into the 7th hole where the last out was made. Instead he used inf/of hernandez which limited his options later so belliger wound up on the bench. Weird.unless grandal has a sore arm or something?

3.
   10. Sunday silence Posted: October 28, 2017 at 07:01 PM (#5564455)
3 if roberts is so quick to go to his pen after 4 inn with no sign of trouble why wouldnt you pull darvish in the 2nd inn?4 My default strategy would be to pull anyone who gives up 2 hard hit balls in short order. Here darvish gave up hr an 2b and walk and roberts leaves him out for 5 more batters! Seeing his win exp go from 29% to 11

Da fawk is that? You can afford to unload your entire bullpen in inn 5 but not 2? Why?

In fact lets make that a checbox:

[ ] FAils to remove pitcher after two hard hit balls w/in 3 batters
   11. BDC Posted: October 28, 2017 at 07:40 PM (#5564477)
They've sneaked the starting times a bit later since the WS opened, haven't they? H:20 instead of H:09. I am sure there's some good TV reason for this but it's a bit insidious :)
   12. Rally Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:00 PM (#5564488)
Observation from the pregame show - Big Papi and A-Rod are not small men, but Frank Thomas looks like he's as big as those two combined.
   13. shoewizard Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:14 PM (#5564493)
Really would be great if this series never even makes it back to LA
   14. shoewizard Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:19 PM (#5564494)
My observation from the pregame is they really want the Dodgers to win because they want a 7 game series. Understandable.
   15. shoewizard Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:30 PM (#5564495)
Chris Taylor killed the D Backs this year, batting .346/.393/.596, and he has had a terrific post season. Although that was just his second hit of the series, he has 4 walks, and 11 walks vs. just 6 K's in the post season overall. I have been so impressed with the quality of his at bats, and his patience. He's been such a tough patient out. Fouling off the tough pitches, and taking some pitches that are really hard to take.

So I was kinda surprised to see he had just 50 walks vs. 142 K's in 568 PA this year

I was looking for signs that he has truly achieved a sustainable level, but I doubt 121 OPS+ is repeated next year. I mean, I realize thats a no shiiit sherlock observation on my part. But there will be a lot of narrative about him, however I just wouldn't bet on more than 100-110 OPS+ going forward.

Roberts lays down an over managing marker early with that delayed steal. Berlinger, the way he has been going, could have used the advantage of having Morton in the stretch.
   17. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:33 PM (#5564497)
MLB should have realized it majorly screwed up in implementing replay the first time a broadcaster said something like "Why not challenge this one, right? No sense in ending the game with a challenge left in the manager's pocket."
   18. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:37 PM (#5564499)
How long do you keep Seager at SS in his career? I don’t think he will age well there. I can see him at 3rd in a couple of years.

Altus was at a much different place in the box tonight. Is it a lefty-righty thing?
   20. Tony S Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:39 PM (#5564501)
Wood got behind all three Houston batters, but got them all out.

I didn’t notice a difference, was he closer to the plate?
   22. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:43 PM (#5564503)
Nice play by Morton
   23. yo la tengo Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:44 PM (#5564504)
Altuve is what I meant. Yeah, he was closer to the middle of the box than he was last night
   24. yo la tengo Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:44 PM (#5564505)
Did Buck and Smoltz say that both Morton and Wood were drafted by the Braves? That would be an oddity in a WS game, wouldn't it? That both pitchers are drafted by the same team?
   25. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:45 PM (#5564506)
Another ####### thing that is clear by replay but "not reviwable." What a crock of ####.
   26. Hey - you and Tommy Lasorda...I hate Tommy Lasorda Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:48 PM (#5564507)
Seems like an obvious thing which could be reviewed. Is there any reasoning behind what is reviewable, beyond balls & strikes NOT being reviewable?
   27. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:49 PM (#5564508)
Hit by pitch is reviewable, is it not? Why would hit by batted ball not be?
   28. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:50 PM (#5564509)
People are giving Gurriel a standing ovation?? Are you f***ing kidding me? I get the home crowd not wanting to boo him, but come on.
   29. Tony S Posted: October 28, 2017 at 08:53 PM (#5564511)
Well, with that GIDP hopefully Gurriel's done his penance.

Nice job pitching to those last two batters. All they were going to do was foul those balls off - if they got on them at all. Morton impressive 1st time through.

That statement from Darvish last night was amazing. Following ths worst night of his professional life he showed incredible grace and generosity of spirit. I want a Darvish jersey now.

Also, Manfred did an incredible job wrapping this scandel up so fast but also somehow making it seem like due process was given. If this was mishandled it could have been an ugly storyline that overshadowed the play on the field. I think he pit it behind them nicely.

She's actually released a few albums as half of the duo She & Him.

Seems completely odd that these two pitchers are holding these two offenses scoreless. Wood has, however, thrown a ton of pitches. I guess the argument is that he won't pitch again until March so there is that

True. I mean, is there any possible way for something involving Zooey Deschanel and a ukulele not to be twee?

Anyway, back to the game. Don't want anyone getting mad.

This is about the DVR-iest game ever. I wish I would have checked to see how it long it just took me to "watch" 4 innings. no real drama.

still, I didn't mind the late innings of Game 2, which realistically you mainly could just skip the commercials. sure, shave a couple of seconds between pitches, but you couldn't get too far ahead of yourself or you might overrun the drama. that was fun.
   54. yo la tengo Posted: October 28, 2017 at 09:31 PM (#5564549)
Why are Buck and Smoltz already talking about using Jansen for more than one inning? What is the sense in that thinking?

Does Bellinger look like this against curveballs all the time? Also, when did it become automatic that changeups are supposed to end up in the dirt? Am I misremembering Glavine's career? I remember his changeup dropping all the time, I don't remember it ending in the dirt all the time

C Morton - pitching great, with some fine D plays backing him
A Wood -- allowed 10 batted balls, zero of which became hits. Pitching with good fortune.

This could end up being a test case for the "would Roberts pull a pitcher with a no-hitter going?" question. I bet yes.

I'm not seeing a lot of real hard contact, except a couple of foul balls. He's inducing weak contact by staying on the edges and of the plate.

Roberts did it to Rich Hill in the regular season two years ago, he'll certainly do it with a WS game at stake.

Neither lineup has seen these starting pitchers much at all. Both pitchers are also commanding their pitches. A recipe for a pitchers duel. Which I like.

Hit by pitch is reviewable, is it not? Why would hit by batted ball not be?

Especially since it is a subset of fair/foul.

Fair/foul is only reviewable in the outfield. Ball-off-the-foot being a subset of infield fair/foul is specifically why it isn't reviewable.
   72. Lassus Posted: October 28, 2017 at 09:47 PM (#5564568)
I'm watching the game while looking for AIRBNBs in London.

The original Stand Up to Cancer commercial with Ron Darling holding the "My catcher" sign still makes me tear up. He looks unbelievably heartbroken and angry all at the same time.

Roberts pulled Hill from a perfect game because of the blisters.

Hill also through a no-hitter through nine in Pittsburgh before losing the game on a HR in the tenth.

They pitch well as a team.

We don't have a double no-hitter going here, but back in 1917 Fred Toney and Hippo Vaughn each finished nine innings with a no-hitter. They both pitched the tenth and one of them (I think Vaughn) lost his no-no. Toney got his no-hitter and the win.

What’s the rule now, would McCann have had to move away from the plate if the runner got closer? He was straddling the baseline when he received the throw, had the throw been later, would he had to move out of the way?

Astros have a luxury of not only Bregman being a true SS, he also has not lost his "alpha" tendencies playing 3B.

and he is (and Correa is) younger than Judge, Sanchez, and Bird. those teams might meet again in the postseason someday.

He has to give him a path to the plate. It's hard to say, but he had his legs apart and Barnes likely had a path to the lane.
