World Series schedule features earlier Game 3

As the final touches are being put on this year’s postseason field, Major League Baseball and FOX on Thursday announced the start times for the 2010 World Series—including the earliest first pitch for a Fall Classic in nearly a quarter-century.

Game 3 is scheduled to start at 6:57 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 30—at either Target Field, Rangers Ballpark, Tropicana Field or Yankee Stadium, as the American League team will be the host. The remaining World Series games are scheduled for first pitch to take place at 7:57 p.m. ET with the exception of Game 4, which will take place following the conclusion of the NFL on FOX, as in years past.

Of course, there will be a rain delay to foil Selig’s master strategem. Or, if in Minnesota or NY, snow.

Or, if in St. Pete, a power outage.

The AL doesn't have HFA this year. I had forgotten about that.

#### football.
I hope they get a bunch of scoreless overtime periods that day.

You can only have one scoreless overtime period.

Then penalty kicks, right?

No, then the winner gets decided by the American Idol judges.

That's great news. And look, here's the cast of "Raising Hope" enjoying the new time start. That's "Raising Hope", airing Tuesdays at 8:30 Eastern/7:30 Central, right here on FOX.

So in order to ensure that more kids can watch the game, they move up the start time of the only game that isn't scheduled on a school night?
   11. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: September 30, 2010 at 07:35 PM (#3652187)
I meant "a bunch of games ending in a scoreless overtime period."
And THEN the post-game blather?
And THEN the World Series?
Ker-pleh.

What's the point of first pitch coming three minutes before the hour? 7:35 or 7:40 would make a lot more sense.

57 minutes of pregame show.

Will it still be daylight time on Oct. 30? If so, it means that if the game is in the Central Time Zone, there will still be some light (albeit not very much, and there would be more of it in Arlington than Minneapolis) when the game starts. (Of course, that was also true the last time the Series was played on the West Coast, in 2002.)

The ads will say the broadcast begins at "7:30."

You rope people in for the pre-game show but then by starting a few minutes before the hour hopefully the top of the first last 6-7 minutes and people don't see the beginning of NCIS:Tuscaloosa or whatever they were going to watch and stay on the game instead of watching a program for an hour then coming back to baseball.

Here's a novel idea, start the Saturday World Series game(s) at 1:35 PM local time, regardless of where it is played. I would suggest starting the Sunday game(s) then as well but since MLB has climbed into bed with FOX I figure that has as much chance of happening as me being elected governor of Indiana on the Socialist-Labor ticket. As someone said upthread, #### football.

Ummmm, a 1:35 Pacific start time would be assinine. That's 10:35 AM Eastern.

Saturday 4 PM Eastern makes a lot of sense, but I'm sure ratings are higher at 7.
   19. John Northey Posted: September 30, 2010 at 08:48 PM (#3652247)
I think snapper got that backwards - a 1:35 eastern time start would be 10:35 pacific. Still, what is wrong with competing with cartoons and having the game completed by mid-afternoon?
   20. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: September 30, 2010 at 08:57 PM (#3652257)
And it'd be bad to have it at 10:30 Pacific time, why?
When football's in season, people don't seem to have any trouble watching that #### all ####### day, morning to night.

You should've run on the Socialist Worker ticket, you silly Trotskyite, or is it the other way around? (All I remember that in New York state in the 1960s, you'd see candidates on both parties' tickets, and I figured there were always some socialist scuffles around a pre-gentrified Union Square.)

D'Oh! Yes, strike that, reverse it.

It's still bad. At 10:35 on a fall afternoon people are out doing stuff, errands, recreation, etc.

Ladies and gentlemen...my first act as your president will be to make the following proclamation:

"By law, all World Series games must start at 7pm Eastern on weekdays, and 4pm Eastern on weekends. And anybody that don't like it, will be boiled in baby oil."

My second proclamation involves Allyson Hanigan. (And the third and fourth, as well.)

Screw that - those of us on the West Coast like games when we come home, rather than just about the Eastern Time Zone.

I'd almost be tempted to vote for a Palin-Paul ticket if they could guarantee to put that into place. Except I'd switch it from baby oil to bacon fat.

I've never understood this knee-jerk "those of us on the west coast" argument whenever anyone suggests any change to the current start times. In case you haven't noticed, they don't wait until you get home to start the games now.

Yes, and it's ridiculous. Particularly when the games are played on the West Coast. I don't see why objecting to even earlier start times would be unusual. If you're a baseball fan and you're not pleased to be missing the first couple innings, don't you think it makes sense to have a "knee-jerk" reaction to a plan that would force you to miss more of the game?

Nope -- it can be no further west than Arlington, Tex., or Minneapolis. Remember, this year the NL gets games 1 and 2, plus possibly 6 & 7. I know by now it seems against human nature, but it actually happened.

You might want to learn how to spell either of her names before you give that one.

Well RMc stated his proclamation in Eastern Time terms, and Initials Guy's post was a direct answer to RMc. That's probably why.

In case you haven't noticed, they don't wait until you get home to start the games now."

As long as we're suggesting improvements, we might as well improve that too. I only mildly disagree with RMc:

"By law, all World Series playoff games must start at 7pm Eastern 6:48pm local time on weekdays, and no later than 4pm Eastern local time on weekends."

There. That's perfect. And yes, 6:48. It's my compromise between the time I want (6) and the regular 7:05.

Percentage of the U.S. population by time zone (percentages rounded up or down to nearest number):

Eastern 47%
Central 33%
Total Eastern & Central - 80.0%

Mountain 5%
Pacific 14%
Eskimos and Hula Babes 1%
Total Mountain, Etc. - 20%

Given the ending times of the postseason games, you'd think that these percentages were reversed.

I really like watching the NCAA Tournament in Hawaii. The last games finish up during happy hour and pu pu platter time and you can get on with your evening without that "What's going to happen in the last game of the Spokane Sub-Regional?" question gnawing at you.

Second proclamation: "Alyson Hannigan will henceforth spell her name Allyson Hanigan." (And, yes, the other proclamations do indeed involve baby oil. And whipped cream.)

Total Eastern & Central - 80%
Total Mountain, Etc. - 20%

Okay, so one fan in five will have trouble seeing the start of the games if they begin at 7pm Eastern. It's better than the other 80% staying up 'til half-past dawn, yes?

That's exactly the point that the networks ignore, in spite of all their supposed "East Coast bias."
   39. Moloka'i Three-Finger Brown (Declino DeShields) Posted: October 01, 2010 at 10:52 AM (#3652531)
35: They've already got the East Coast audience by that point, and if you don't want to stay up till the end, that's your problem (or so the network would say). I know next to nothing about this stuff, but I'm guessing ad rates peak between the 3rd and 7th innings, when people in all parts of the country are (or are able to be) parked in front of the TV.

(East Coast guy, in favor of earlier start times, especially on the weekends.)

More knee-jeerking, I see. Did I say anything about starting even earlier? I've long favored starting games at times that make the most sense for the fans where the game is being played (although I don't really get powderhorn's preference for 6 pm). But if I'm staying up all night watching on TV so that you can get to the ballpark on time, then you don't get to make me drive home from the ballpark at 2 am so that you can get to the TV on time.

And no, favoring a status quo that pretty much sucks for everybody most of the time doesn't make sense just because you fear that a change might suck more for some people some of the time.
