Wrist Surgery For Carl Crawford

Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford had surgery on his left wrist in Arizona today. GM Ben Cherington said Crawford should be recovered to play “the bulk” of the season…Crawford felt soreness when he started his offseason hitting workouts around Jan. 1. He had an MRI that showed cartilage damage and arthroscopic surgery was recommended.

...Cherington did not rule Crawford being eligible for Opening Day. But it sounds like he could miss the early part of the season…we’re optimistic Carl will be progressing in baseball activities as we get into spring training and be in a position to be active and our left fielder in our lineup for the bulk of the regular season.

More good health news from the Red Sox crack medical staff.

On the bright side, maybe this has something to do with why he was so bad last year?

They did fire some people in the training staff, right? I have a hazy recollection of this happening back at the end of the season, but it might have just been the conditioning coach or something that they fired.

Since I was planning for Crawford to not give us anything more than a v.2011 level of production, this isn't really a net loss in my book. If he ever performs better than 2011 I'll just take it as an unexpected bonus.

On the dark side, wrist injuries always linger forever.

Well ####.

The Red Sox fan view on Carl Crawford's future is pretty amusing. The consensus seems to be the following:

age and OPS+ (projected future years in bold)
20 77
21 81
22 105
23 111
24 113
25 117
26 89
27 116
28 135
29 85
30 80
31 60
32 40
33 0
34 -100
35 -100

I can't stand Carl Crawford. This doesn't help.

And I hate John Lackey. I know that's not related to this thread, but I haven't said it in writing in almost a month, so I've got it out of my system.

And I'm fine with that.

[7] It always makes me think of Jeter in the grocery store diving into the shelf with all the pasta. I know that's not related to this thread, but I've wanted to say that for a long time.

Age 35 should be -200.

hee-hee

I realize I'm irrational in my assessment, because Crawford's sure to have a "dead cat bounce" year at some point (and why not 2012?).

Perhaps Crawford just needs to be... confused

So after being a $20M replacement player in year 1 of his contract, he's going to start year 2 by missing the first month or two? So the deal will be 8 out of 42 months complete without him providing any value at all over replacement. Pretty impressive return on that 140 million so far.

Suddenly it feels like the 90s at Fenway right now.

I'm in the process of compliling my 2011 review for my personal record. And I found myself wondering who I'd rather have (contract and all). Crawford for 6 more years and what, $120 mil? - or Vernon Wells for 3 years $63 million.

I guess Wells is the obvious answer, but I think Crawford at least has the chance to not suck at some point. I feel like it's closer than it appears at first look.

If we're lucky, he'll hit like post-wrist surgery Nomar!

Between Crawford and Wells, I'll take Crawford...he'll be back and producing at some point, and sometimes at a very high level. That can't happen with Wells.
