WSJ: The Happy Heckler Can’t Be Heard Now in the Din at Tropicana Field

The now silent world of Robert “The Howl With One Vowel” Szasz. Jamie Tennyson writes hello.

But Wednesday night, in the Rays’ first appearance in a World Series, Mr. Szasz’s trademark jeers (“Hey, Why don’t you get a tennis racket? It’s easier to hit the ball!”) were largely drowned out by the cheers and clanging cowbells from the capacity crowd at The Trop. “He couldn’t even hear me,” sighed Mr. Szasz, sinking into his front-row leather seat after attempting to heckle the Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman Ryan Howard in the first inning.

It’s been that kind of season for Mr. Szasz. The more popular his team has become, the less he is needed. “I think he’s kind of lost his place,” says Peter Gammons, ESPN’s major league baseball commentator.

...Such was the case with Mr. Szasz’s attempt to taunt the Phillies’ Mr. Howard Wednesday night. Mr. Howard’s first-inning at-bat followed a two-run home run by the Phillies’ Chase Utley. The crowd was still groaning in dismay when Mr. Szasz started into his routine.

“Hey, Ryan. You gonna go back to back, baby?”

“What do you got, baby?”

No one seemed to notice. “They can’t hear you, Dad,” said Mr. Szasz’s 9-year-old son, Brent, who sat behind him.

“They can’t hear you, Dad,” said Mr. Szasz’s 9-year-old son, Brent, who sat behind him.

You mean hid behind him - with a bag over his head and holding a sign that reads "He's not my real dad".

Maybe he could team with Dickie V. The two of them could drown out the crowd.

Mr. Szasz, 42 years old, who owns a construction and land-development company in Clearwater, Fla.

Uh-oh.

I did this to Butch Biela of the State College Spikes at a Batavia Muckdogs game in August. Even sang him a song to the tune of Blister in the Sun. He went 2-for-5...

Uh-oh.

Scientology alert? That town creeps me out.

Did the WSJ editor KNOW this headline was a reference to Xaviera Hollander is what I want to know, or was it slipped by? Did the writer himself know it?

now go away or we shall taunt you a second time-a

Lassus, I'd have to almost guarantee that the editor recognized the reference to the Happy Hooker.

Being a dumb A-hole at a ballpark now gets you a feature story in the Wall Street Journal? Nice...

My thoughts exactly, #8. Why this guy is allowed to behave in such a way is beyond. For a team that was hurting for fans, you think they would have been trying to make it a pleasant environment to watch a game.

The Marlins certainly have a pleasant environment to watch a game. I figure the Rays were encouraging him in order to get some publicity, and to show that they have at least one fan, and because it was standard issue for teams to have fans like this a century ago so the baseball gods would not look kindly on the oppression of such things. But that is no excuse for being 100% annoying to the people who actually have to listen to him, as opposed to the people who read about him in the paper.

That guy didn't just hurt the other fans at the games. He annoyed the #### out of everyone who watched a game at that stadium on TV, too.

in the guys favor, he wasnt a constant heckler, he just picks out 1 target per game.

and for all the mocking the whole tampa baseball scene got over the years, I'm surprised people here and elsewhere havent been more supportive of ANY sign of fan-spirit, even if you dont like its specific manifestations (rayhawks, cowbells, this one heckler etc etc).

I was waiting for this article to show up. I thought about the guy the other day, and whats going on now was totally predictable.

For this guy, it's not about the game, it's about HIM.

This guy needs Ronny Woo-Woo as his life coach. He'll teach him how to be heard no matter WHAT.

I'm an Orioles fan. My favorite game in TB was when we had Sosa on the team. The heckler went after Sosa and was on his case the whole game. Sosa was pretty annoyed with him (much to the joy of O's fans, since I don't think most of us could stand him) and struck out several times.

That's precisely why I find him hilarious. He said something to the effect of "if you pick on everyone all game, it's obnoxious." Well, it's obnoxious anyways, but funny when it's just one guy getting some ridiculous and often nonsensical taunts thrown at him.

I can see why you guys are so annoyed with him, but I think it's totally awesome. Or at least it was before the team became serious.

I adore the Rays heckler. I hope they give him his own microphone next year. He's a tradition.
   18. Curse of the Andino Posted: October 26, 2008 at 12:08 AM (#2994703)
He wrote a book, self-published. I'm in St. Pete for the book festival here (uh-oh), and from all the Rays' jerseys around, I just gotta say, he missed a golden opportunity to sell a few copies.

(probably the only thing that would have sold today... things are tough in Tampa.)

I have no beef with Rayhawks nor cowbells, though I do find the sound of the latter to be annoying. This guy's antics are just inconsiderate.
