X-rays reveal small cheek fracture for Astros’ Erstad

Nebraksa cheekbone?

As a precaution, manager Cecil Cooper will hold Erstad out of Tuesday’s intrasquad game at Osceola County Stadium.

Erstad suffered the injury—near his right eye—when he missed a sinking line drive fielding balls off a machine Sunday.

“A ball kicked funny off the grass and caught me in the cheek bone,” he said. “I guess it’s precautionary more than anything. … It was just a line drive and I went to catch it. Well, I missed it. ”

...“They did find a small fracture,” general manager Ed Wade said. “It will not inhibit his ability to play.”

Other factors do that…

“It will not inhibit his ability to play.”

Clearly things are not going well for the Astros this spring.

Remember when Erstad was arguably the greatest defensive centerfielder in baseball? It's hard to watch guys get old.

At first I thought they meant the lower cheeks, from bouncing on the bench.

I was hoping for a Pixies reference but that's not bad either.

Erstad is on a team and Edmonds is still looking?

Erstad was still pretty good defensively last year. +19.4 in the outfield, according to UZR (per 150 games).

Erstad is in AAAA. Others are talking over/under on wins for the Braves, but what's the line for the Astros this year? Methinks it aint' 75. Thankfully there's the Pirates.

Guess this injury means Erstad won't be the impact player Astros' fans were counting on this year.

"At first I thought they meant the lower cheeks, from bouncing on the bench."

Wait, false alarm. It's not a fracture, just a crack.
