HOW WILL THE NATIONALS LOSE TODAY?!

That Scherzer v. Nola showdown looks delicious.

So I checked the full standings for the first time in a while:

The Orioles have been eliminated! The Royals have an elimination number of 1. Both are under .300.

Incredible.

Last night I went to the first half of a Durham Bulls vs Gwinnett Snappers double header. It was my first minor league game since they implemented their pace of game rules in 2015. You could really feel the effect. No one paid any attention to the pitch clocks, but everyone had clearly internalized the time requirements and the game kept moving at a really nice clip.

The Bulls only allowed two base runners (one hit, and one E-4 that was instantly erased by a nice 5-4-3 DP) and it was a 7 inning game because of the double header, which meant that the time of game was 1:43. That was nuts. (Edit: Game 2 had 10 runs scored and took 1:48, which is even nuttier.)

The Bulls' starter, Jose Mujica, looked like a classic example of a guy who could pitch forever at AAA and never have a real MLB career. His breaking pitches were nothing special, his fastball sat at 90, he doesn't have a strikeout pitch, and he absolutely pounded the zone early in the count. Great guy to keep a game moving and active, I selfishly hope he spends the next decade pitching in Durham.

I sat in row A, section 102, so maybe 20 feet away from sitting directly behind the catcher. I'd never been in seats like that for a game at this level. It was phenomenal.

Jorge Castillo @jorgecastillo
Gio Gonzalez, Matt Wieters, and Ryan Zimmerman all passed through revocable trade waivers unclaimed, per source, so they can be dealt to any team before the Aug. 31 deadline.

Hot properties!!

Hmmm...
   6. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2018 at 02:42 PM (#5732407)
Max Scherzer has allowed only 1 not-so-clean hit through 6 innings, with 8 K's, along with 3 BB, over 90 pitches. The pitch count and the state of the Nationals bullpen probably precludes any need to retroactively examine the official scoring. Nola hasn't been bad either, still 0-0.

TRIVIA for TODAY:

Among players who made their MLB debut post WWII (so, integration era through modern times), Barry Bonds has the highest OPS. At 1051, he is the only player over 1000.

Who is 2nd?

   8. jacksone (AKA It's OK...) Posted: August 23, 2018 at 02:47 PM (#5732417)
Pretty sure Mookie playing at 3rd would have had that. Ramirez's MVPness not shining through...

Trout could pass him (perhaps temporarily).

Correct on both counts. Sorry, I didn't know this was a repeat Q. Yes, Trout with a hot streak could move into 2nd, or drop as low as 5th, by year's end.

Hmmm...

Or not. Swihart seems to be an above average defender wherever he plays. Two good plays made at 1st so far.
   13. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2018 at 04:11 PM (#5732471)
Max Scherzer pitches a 2-hit beauty, matching Nola pretty well until Max surrenders his requisite home run to put the Phillies up with what would end up the final score, 2-0. I guess the offense figures that with Max pitching, why bother scoring runs?? Your 2018 Washington Nationals, ladies and gentlemen.
   14. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: August 23, 2018 at 04:31 PM (#5732483)
To be fair, Nola is pretty good, and pitched brilliantly today. For whatever reason, the sum of the Nats' parts just don't seem to add up to much this season. Outside of Scherzer, their pitching's super meh, so the team's just meh.
   15. Perry Posted: August 23, 2018 at 06:13 PM (#5732523)
Ian Desmond with a 2-run walkoff homer with 2 out in the 9th, 4-3 Rox.
   16. Perry Posted: August 23, 2018 at 06:15 PM (#5732525)
Rox now host the Cardinals for a series between two pretty hot teams who have both been winning a lot of games late.

I'll have to do that sometime soon, while my daughter still lives in Durham.

Besides a blistering stretch from mid-May to the ASB, this describes the Dodgers well. Since acquiring Machado at the break, they're 14-18 and sit 4 1/2 back of the D'backs, 3 1/2 out of the WC. Losing Seager hurt a lot, but it's HR or nothing on offense, and their pen is shot. Jansen returns from afib and gives up 3 HRs and to games to the Cards. Even if they squeak in somehow, good pitching will shut 'em down and out quick.

I guess there's gotta be a down year for perennial playoff teams sometime.
   19. Perry Posted: August 23, 2018 at 06:47 PM (#5732554)
Rockies and Cardinals now the wild card leaders and both 8-2 in their last 10. Should be a good series, I have a ticket for tomorrow and may just see what I can get for Sunday.

Tied with Scherzer in ERA in 12 less innings. Leads in Pitching WAR, FWIW. He's in the top 4 in most key indicies.

He might be better than pretty good, especially with that horrendous defense behind him.

The Orioles have been eliminated! The Royals have an elimination number of 1. Both are under .300.

The Orioles were eliminated on August 10 tying the 1932 Red Sox and, of course, the 1962 Mets for the earliest elimination date.

Moreland whacked his knee on the lip of the photographers well chasing a foul ball. Watching the play it didn’t look too bad, probably a bruise though I guess it could be worse.
   23. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2018 at 07:16 PM (#5732573)
Max facts:

James Meyerriecks @iofshinsplint
The Nats have been shut out in four of Max Scherzer's starts this season. They've lost those games
1-0 (June 26 @ TB),
2-0 (June 10 vs. SFG),
2-0 (June 16 @ TOR), and
2-0 (Aug. 23 vs. PHI)

Clearly, if Scherzer never allowed a run the game would go on into infinity because the Nats simply refuse to score any runs when Max pitches.

funny stat I ran across from Tuesday:

Reds are 1-15 in Homer Bailey’s starts; 54-54 with everybody else

anyone have an idea of how to fix this problem?

Not giving any more starts to Homer Bailey might be a good first step.

9-24 with a 6.31 ERA from 2015 on and the peripherals to match. Might be time to try something different

Braves challenge a Markakis line drive down the LF line that seems to pretty clearly kick up chalk, the call stands. I’m not sure how that’s a case where replay got it right.

Start Bailey against the Cubs. Odds are about 4-1 he gives up nothing but a solo HR.

Hamels has been an amazing pickup. It's going to be very hard for the Cubs to not pick up his $20mil option next year, even with already having 6 SP on the books (Lester, Darvish, Hendricks, Quintana, Chatwood, and Smyly). I bet the Cubs might do everything they can to make Chatwood disappear this offseason, and depth is good. That's also a shitton of money.
   41. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 23, 2018 at 09:11 PM (#5732631)
I don't think it would be smart to count on Darvish for anything.
   42. Zonk qualifies as an invasive species Posted: August 23, 2018 at 09:12 PM (#5732632)
At this point, unless Hamels suddenly falls apart, I think they definitely should.

I mean, he'll be another year older sure - but he's clearly the Cubs best SP right now.

Yu has an opt-out, doesn't he :-)?

Let Hamels start the 8th? I know Sept 1 is coming quick, but with all these consecutive games - and Mills getting a start tomorrow - wouldn't be a terrible thing to give one of the leverage guys a night off.

Javy is mostly a benevolent Javyer. I think it was in the interest of getting Hamels the CG for the most part, but also ensuring that he's closer to the cycle on the off-chance that things fall apart and he gets another at-bat.

the Mets and deGrom 2018 may prove to be the tipping point.
