Yahoo: Capuano pitches 2-hitter, Mets beat Braves 6-0

Chris Capuano pitched the game of his life, tossing a two-hitter and striking out a career-high 13 as the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 6-0 Friday night in their final matchup before taking a break because of Hurricane Irene.
...
Capuano (10-11) slowed down the NL wild-card leaders and handed them their second loss in nine games. He had Atlanta hitters taking terrible swings all game, didn’t walk any of them and faced just one batter over the minimum.

Capuano threw 122 pitches in the first complete game of the season for the Mets.
...
An All-Star in 2006 with Milwaukee, the left-hander has been slowed by two Tommy John surgeries. This was the third shutout and fourth complete game of his career—the others came long ago, in his All-Star season.

Highest game score of the season, sez Neyer. Ugh. And Venters's scoreless streak is over. Alas and alack.

I saw the Angels-Rangers score and went to check my fantasy league to see just how bad Haren was for me. But then I saw Capuano's right below him so that cheered me back up a bit.

Is he signed through next year? I really would like to have him back.

AGony's OPS moves back below 600 where it belongs.

I love Capuano. Smart guy, funny. Obviously committed to baseball and loves it.

Way to go Chris!!

Not signed for 2012. For the right price (i.e., on a one-year deal), I'd be happy to have him back. If he wants two, then there are plenty of other guys like him Sandy can find for the back of the rotation.

But last night was great. I called the 96 game score right as it ended -- what surprised me was that Verlander hadn't had a higher score. Neat.

How many guys have ever come back from two Tommy Johns?

I'm hoping he pitches well the rest of the way out, as I like his approach to pitching. Although his peripherals have been solid (3.97 FIP, 3.69 xFIP), even with this game his ERA+ is only 86 (ERA is 4.43... I do expect Mets pitchers to gain a bit when year-end stadium factors come out, however).

Yeah, BBRef has Citi as a hitter's park this year. What's that about?

Citi was never severely a pitcher's park. It depresses HR (and still does this year), and the mediots think HR is the only component of park factors. But the HR just turn into doubles which aren't all that different for run scoring. Vice versa happens at new Yankee stadium, where HR are severely inflated but overall run scoring is only slightly so.

Part of my irritation with the FO this past offseason is that none of its moves had anything to do w 2012. It seemed reasonable that any deal with a pitcher like Capuano who, with his injury history was odds on to not do well in 2011, would include a club option for 2012, such that in return for the risk assumed the Mets might additionally benefit in a season in which they might have a shot at contending.

'Course, I don't doubt now that Alderson knew then the Wilpons were in far deeper #### than he let on, and he therefore knew that little things like a club option for 2012 were largely meaningless. With time, all things become clear.

At any rate, good for Capuano, it hasn't been a great season for him but I guess any season at all after 2 TJs is probably a pretty good one. Interesting that Cashman beat Alderson soundly in the 'picking up cheap useful pitchers' competition. It's unusual that a competition, however inadvertant, between GMs is both clear and clearly resolved.

Let's assume the Mets didn't propose a club option, which of course none of us know. Maybe Capuano had another offer and would have taken it had Alderson insisted on a 2012 option. But if they were looking only at 2011, I can't agree that Capuano has all that much to do with the Mets' '12 plans, and their success or failure, anyway. In other words, if I'm asking Alderson to look ahead to the 2012 Mets, having the chance to lock down Chris Capuano wouldn't have been on the list.

It was a hell of a lot more critical to 2012 that Alderson got rid of the K-Rod albatross to free up payroll, than that he got an option on Capuano. I'm not saying it would have been a bad idea, if doable. I'm saying it just isn't really the basis for judgment here.

Hong-Chih Kuo, for one, but he's not starting any longer.
