Yahoo: [Delmon] Young, [Victor] Martinez homer as Tigers sweep Indians, 8-7

Center fielder Austin Jackson threw out Kosuke Fukudome at the plate to complete a game-ending double play and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in a wild game Sunday.

Delmon Young and Victor Martinez homered in a seven-run third inning as the first-place Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Indians. The Indians could have taken over first place with a sweep of their own, but leave Detroit trailing by 4 1-2 games in the AL Central race.
Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 37th save in as many tries, but it wasn’t easy. He walked Fukudome to start the inning and then hit Jason Donald on an 0-2 pitch. Jack Hannahan bunted the runners over, before pinch-hitter Matt LaPorta lined to centerfield and Jackson threw a perfect strike to the plate to get Fukudome by a step.

Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez (1-1) took the loss, giving up eight runs in 3 1-3 innings…

Ugh,Ubaldo. I hope you're just adjusting to a new league, home, coach, etc.

As for the primaries going the other way in the trade: Alex White will start for the Rockies on Tuesday vs. the Astros, and Drew Pomeranz's season is over after one sterling start for the Rockies' AA team. Pomeranz had an appendectomy.

I was rooting for Cleveland, so that was disappointing, but that was the most entertaining game I've seen all year. Lots of runs, big comeback by Cleveland, tons of close plays on the bases, Leyland thrown out after one of them, some snapping and snarling after Porcello threw behind Astrubel Cabrera, just pennant race ball at its finest.

I dunno. That trade still seems sketch on the Rockies' part even though most seem to agree they got a good haul for Jimenez. This is the guy that a year ago was allegedly going to anchor a rotation for a team that had a good shot at competing in a weak division for the next several years. And then suddenly, he's expendable even after they ink him to a reasonable contract? Something's off there.

Re: the game

I missed the first half, but what a wild affair. I missed the first 14 runs scored in the game and still managed to see:

1) Travis Hafner get hurt
2) Jim Leyland get tossed
3) Some horrendous baserunning by the Tigers
4) One of the finest defensive plays at home to end a game since Pudge tagged out JT Snow to end the 2003 NLDS

I'm still hoping for a tight race down the stretch since none of the teams in other divisions are obliging. But my god, the Indians are just a tedious team to watch offensively. It's been a while since I've seen a contending team so good at extracting so little out of so many potential scoring opportunities.

What a disastrous weekend for the Tribe.
