Yahoo: Diamondbacks sign Overbay, put Nady on 15-day DL

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed free agent infielder Lyle Overbay and placed infielder Xavier Nady on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand.

Arizona designated pitcher Juan Jaime for assignment.

Nady was injured Friday night when he was hit by a second-inning pitch from the New York Mets’ Dillon Gee.

The 34-year-old Overbay was released Tuesday by Pittsburgh after hitting .227 with eight homers and 37 RBIs in 103 games. Overbay was drafted by Arizona in 1999 and played with the Diamondbacks from 2001-03.

Overbay benefits from Nady's bad break here... escaping the Pirates and joining a first place team. Juan Miranda was an internal option to replace Nady on the roster, I suppose, but the Dbacks seems to have read him his rights already. Hopefully Gibson now commits to playing Goldy full time at 1B and lets him get comfortable in the majors over the next 6 weeks. If Overbay starts at 1B more than once a week, this signing was a failure.

1k5v3L: you say "escaping the Pirates" but as I recall, he actually left a first place team, and has now joined a first place team.

This is cool because Overbay has never played in a playoff game in the majors. Here's hoping he hits in Arizona and gets his chance.

Hard for me to believe that Arizona couldn't find a better 1B lying around somewhere, but since this saves the Pirates a couple grand, I'm all in favor of it.
