Yahoo!:  Fielder drives in game-winner for Brewers

MILWAUKEE (AP)—Prince Fielder singled in Rickie Weeks with one out in the bottom of the ninth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 on Saturday night for their second straight win.

Hindsight being 20/20 and all, I probably would have walked Fielder to face Hart, who was hitless.

Tyler Yates came in for the ninth.  Yahoo! lists Damaso Marte as the Bucs’ closer, but he doesn’t seem like a great option.  Said it before, say it again:  Joe Borowski fits here, at least for the rest of the season, without Matt Capps.

Maholm, the lefty who has a 2.43 ERA over his past seven starts, allowed only Mike Cameron’s solo homer in the second while giving up four hits and striking out six.

The one recent bright spot from the starting pitching, and it’s being wasted.

And

The Brewers then got caught in a baserunning blunder when Jason Kendall hit a chopper up the middle. Shortstop Jack Wilson threw to third and caught Hall in a rundown. Jose Bautista tagged Hall and alertly fired to first, where Kendall had made the turn and couldn’t avoid being tagged out by Adam LaRoche.

If Brian Schneider had done this, he’d never hear the end of it.

Braun was IBB'd to face Fielder, and they didn't even bring in a LHP for Fielder.

You walk Fielder to get to Hart, you load the bases w/ one out for a pitcher who walks a lot of hitters.

I like the JS beat writer's blog entry about that horrible DP:

After (Hall) was tagged out, Bautista fired to first to get Kendall, who was too far off the base for some reason.

I love the way that Kendall made such a huge mistake right after Anderson & Schroeder were talking about how he's definitely the guy you want up in this situation because of his veteran savvy. Of course, it won't stop them from swinging from his nuts in the future (as they seem to spend most of every game doing), but it was still funny.

"...where Kendall had made the turn and couldn’t avoid being tagged out by Adam LaRoche."

All the more reason to hate Jason Kendall.

I can't imagine Joe Borowski actually being a team's best option for closer.

"It's a dangerous play, it's a play that a veteran like Jack Wilson can pull, and there's not a lot of people that can make that play," Yost said. "Jack can, and he did. There was nothing we did wrong, either player. There's not anything that either one of them did, it's just a great, daring play."

Of course Ned thinks neither of them ###### up. Jesus.

And he got over 1,000,000 votes for the All Star game.

As much as I want them to, the Pirates are not competing for a playoff spot. Getting to .500 would be a very productive season for this franchise. There is no "closer in waiting" or any kid at Indy or Altoona that Borowski would be blocking. He adds another arm and a veteran presence to the bullpen, both of which are needed. I'm the first one to doubt Dusty Bakerism, but Doug Mientkiewisz's presence seems to affect the team, even without eye-popping numbers.

All that being said, I'd like to see Gas Can Joe in a Pirates uniform. It's the kind of gamble that works for a team like Pittsburgh: if it works, Huntington looks like a genius. If it doesn't, there's not an obvious answer to second guess him on. It's also the only team I can think of where Borowski can go, close games, and possibly revive his career again like he did in Florida. Of course I'd rather see a young reliever take the job, Crain or Delcarmen or someone coming over in a deal (thinking Nady), but I don't think that's likely.

Oh, and I just heard some guy on ESPN radio suggest the Rays trade away Brignac for a guy like Xavier Nady. I choked on my Coke.

Baserunning screw-up aside, he's been fine this season.

Gets on base at about a .350 clip, been one of the best throwing catchers in MLB this season, pitchers love throwing to him, he's not an ass like Estrada.

A rather servicable spare part.

Borowski sucks. I can't believe anyone could desire to see him on their team. If he can't help a team that has its sights on the playoffs, he can't help one get to .500. Or .250. He lowers the potential of any team. His presence in Pittsburgh would probably make the Phillies worse.

What you fail to realize is that white guys who don't look like athletes are good for at least 7 wins per year.

It's due to scrappiness and guts, as well as time spent in the minors. It's the not the kind of thing you can teach.

Man, sucks so bad it affects the entire state.
