Yahoo: Nationals sign RHP [Livan] Hernandez to 1-year extension

Washington general manager Mike Rizzo announced after Sunday’s victory over the St. Louis Cardinals that [Livan] Hernandez would return to the Nationals in 2011, lending some stability to a starting staff that will be without Stephen Strasburg.
...
“This year, I prove I can continue to pitch for a long time,” Hernandez said. “It’s a good year for me. I got to prove—and I said in spring training — that I want to come back and perform like I used to. … It’s happened right now and I feel really good about myself.”

Hernandez is the only active major leaguer to start 30 or more games in 12 consecutive seasons. He can extend the streak to 13 with three more starts.

MLB.com:

After Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Cardinals, the Nationals announced they have signed right-hander Livan Hernandez to a one-year extension worth $1 million plus incentives.

Good move on several fronts, admittedly made out of necessity as the team bides its time until Strasburg returns. Livan gives the Nats innings, he's still capable (though on a contender he'd be a back-of-the-rotation guy), and he'll probably be an aid for Maya once he enters the bigs, just as Orlando Hernandez has been helping Maya in the minors.

Washington fans love Livan's approach to the game and that he's also a fine fielder and hitter. Now, get Adam Dunn signed, please.

Abused Nationals pitcher: iron man. Non-abused Nationals pitcher: Tommy John surgery.

If you want a durable pitcher, sign a tub of goo.

Maybe they should strip him for parts.

I remember when Prospectus first tracked "Pitcher-Abuse-Points" and Livan owned it every year...they gave up saying his arm was going to fall off after about three years.

They signed a guy with a 117 ERA+ to a 1m/year extension? I mean, I know Livan is a near sure bet to regress to at least the mean, but that's still way cheap for a guy who's a good bet to give you 30+ 3rd to 4th starter level starts.

He's only 35? I thought he'd been around forever.

The previous 4 years his ERA+ was 84.

That's Orlando.

Or Roberto.

Or Roberto.

That made me go check b-ref to see if he was still pitching. I wouldn't have been surprised to find that he was the 7th man in the pen for a team like Arizona.

He's been around forever (since 1997), it's just that he was very young at the time (and Orlando was very old).

Oh, the irony.
