Yahoo: Padres’ Carlos Quentin to appeal eight-game ban for brawl with Zack Greinke, Dodgers

San Diego Padres outfielder Carlos Quentin will appeal the eight-game suspension he received after inciting a brawl during which Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke broke his left collarbone.
After Greinke hit Quentin on the arm with a 3-2 pitch in the sixth inning of a one-run game, the 30-year-old bull-rushed the mound at Petco Park. Greinke threw his glove off, stood his ground and got trucked, swallowed by a pile of Dodgers and Padres who cleared the benches.
Greinke will have surgery and is expected to be sidelined for around two months.

Eight games, meanwhile, is among the stiffer penalties MLB has assessed for a player charging the mound – equal to what Nyjer Morgan received in Sept. 2010.
Major League Baseball, which announced the suspension and appeal Friday night, wanted to ensure Quentin missed the Padres’ series with the Dodgers that begins Monday – and a source expects the appeal to be settled before then. Considering the way Thursday night’s melee ended – with Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp and Quentin nose-to-nose in the stadium bowels, needing to be separated by teammates and security – the suspension would allow the teams to cool off before their next series June 3-5.

And it's Jackie Robinson Day on Monday.

An on-field race riot would be kind of retro, but still...

Kemp and Quentin nose to nose in the bowels?

There is no way Quentin is going to be allowed to play in the Monday game if only BECAUSE it will be Jackie Robinson Day, and having two teams possibly going at it wearing "42" on their back is not going to go over well with the Commissioner's office. At all.

F-U, Quentin. You're lucky it's only 8 games.

Sit down and shut up.

8 games? In the other thread did anyone think it would be this light?

Years ago, when I taught, I allowed students to request regrades of papers and essays - with the explicit understanding that I reserved the right to lower their grade if I decided I'd been too easy on them. I wish that were the case for these appeals. Quentin appeals it, and MLB decides that since it was preplanned based on his earlier comments, that he deserves longer than 8 games - especially since there's no way that Greinke intentionally hit him in a one run game - with a 3-2 count, iirc.

@6: Brilliant.

Btw, how many took you up on it? In a few classes I invited people at the beginning of the semester to commit to grading themselves. I'd get maybe 20% going that route.

Carlos Quentin’s Wikipedia page vandalized shortly after suspension announcement

Hasn't he suffered enough!

Excited Dodgers fans runs in the room: "Greinke's got a broken collarbone!"

Non baseball fan: "What?"

Dodgers fan: "After Greinke hit Quentin on the arm with a 3-2 pitch in the sixth inning of a one-run game, the 30-year-old bull-rushed the mound at Petco Park. Greinke threw his glove off, stood his ground and got trucked, swallowed by a pile of Dodgers and Padres who cleared the benches."

Non baseball fan: "Oh, now I see."

Quentin should have his prison taken away.

#8 - it probably averaged two a semester. I'd rarely change a grade up or down, though I think I did bump things up a couple of times. It deterred all but those actually seriously thinking I was wrong from asking for it. Frankly, grade enough papers, and you'll misunderstand a point eventually, so that's fair. It was just the "students" who obviously put no effort and then wanted to avoid the consequences I wanted to deter.

#5 I haven't read the section on player discipline in the current CBA, but the previous CBA said that past ruling for similar matters had to be considered. 8 games is the high end of what I was expecting.

And #6 I do know that some soccer players have seen their penalty increased when appealing discipline.

There's an item in one of National Lampoon's "True Facts" about a guy in China being found guilty of corruption, getting sentenced to 14 years and appealing. The tribunal hearing the appeal ordered him to be executed.
