Yahoo: Rangers’ [Nelson] Cruz expected out 3 weeks with hamstring

Texas slugger Nelson Cruz is expected to miss about three weeks with another hamstring injury.

The AL West-leading Rangers say an MRI exam on Monday revealed a grade 1 strain of Cruz’s left hamstring. He is expected to get an injection from team physician Dr. Keith Meister that is intended to stimulate the healing process.

Cruz got hurt when running out a double in Sunday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angles.

Dallas Morning News: Lance Berkman among Rangers’ options while Nelson Cruz is out

St. Louis’ Lance Berkman is the top alternative should the Texas Rangers decide they need an outfielder to fill in for the injured Nelson Cruz.

Berkman is playing out a one-year contract. His salary for one month would be $1.33 million. Berkman is hitting .289 with 30 homers and 81 RBIs. He is believed to have cleared waivers, which are required for a trade.

Seems like Cruz misses 6-8 weeks annually with hamstring issues.

I'm more than a bit surprised Berkman cleared waivers, considering he's on a one-year deal.

Me, too. MLBTR linked to this article saying Berkman had cleared.

Wow. The Diamondbacks, Giants, Phillies, Braves, Tigers, Angels, Red Sox and Yankees could all use a guy like Berkman. I'm surprised he cleared.

That he does. He spends another ten weeks striking out feebly, and the rest of his time hitting like Rogers Hornsby. Hard to figure.

An injection to stimulate the healing process? Isn't that all that Andy Pettitte was doing?

Me too. At first I thought it didn't matter since St. Louis wouldn't trade him, but I didn't realize they were 10.5 games back.

How in the hell do the Giants pass on Berkman? And if I was the DBacks, I sure woulda claimed him just to keep him away from the Giants. Puzzling.

[8] Actually, the D'Backs couldn't claim to block the Giants since the Giants have waiver priority. That said, Berkman would be a pretty nice upgrade at first base for the D'Backs.

I find it impossible to believe Berkman cleared waivers. Unless there is some truth to the fact that just about zero MLB teams have ability to add money this year.
