Yahoo Sports: Astros acquire Wolf

“My name is the Wolf. I solve problems.”

The Houston Astros, believing their season can still be saved, acquired pitcher Randy Wolf from San Diego on Tuesday in exchange for minor leaguer Chad Reineke.

Wolf, an NL All-Star in 2003, is 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA in 21 starts for the Padres this season. The 31-year-old is in his 10th season and will play for his fourth team. He previously played for Philadelphia (1999-2006) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2007) before joining the Padres this season.

Ummm.... I can't think of a more random transaction.

They needed another shitty pitcher to replace Chacon.

Wade is dumber than me - and I'm dumb

Is consistently being both delusional and stupid a virtue? If so, well, the Astros certainly do have their virtues.

Is Reineke much of a prospect? He's in the PCL, but Round Rock is one of the best pitcher's parks in that league, and his ERA was 4.41 (though with solid to good peripherals at age 26). I really don't know anything about him.

I agree it's not a brilliant move if Reineke is worth anything. They do seem to believe that it will give them a leg up on signing Wolf for next season if they want him, but I don't really buy that. I think he wants to live in Southern California, if any of the three teams want him, and will give him any offer vaguely comparable to what he's getting elsewhere.

I think the true ineptitude of the Ed Wade year(s?) in Houston will be that he was the only GM who even Pat Gillick was able to swindle in his 3-year Phils tenure. Good grief what a silly move.

There's so much funny stuff here for a Phils' fan. There's Wade getting Wolfie back for no particular reason. There's Wolfie going to that park when one of the reasons he left and wouldn't come back was, you guessed it, the park. It's nice to follow Slow Eddie from a distance.

Does Eddie have his blankie, Tomas Perez, in the Astros organization somewhere?

I actually met Ed Wade at the All Star Game pre party. I saw him walk by once, then later, convinced it was an MLB GM.

I said, "Hi Dan."
He stopped, looked at me perplexed and said, "Ed."

I said, "Dan O'Dowd"?
He replied, "Ed Wade"

I then blew it by introducing my friend, a native of Philly and Phillies fan, who missed the chance to knock him out.

I told another co-worker who looked interested, "He's the GM of the Astros." I said.
"Who?"

"He was the guy that got choked out by that pitcher". I said.
"Oh Yea. That guy!"

My evil side still wishes the Phils had picked that guy up just for spite.

Why the Gillick hate? The Phillies have been pretty good under his guidance, haven't they?

Apparently no team has picked him up - despite a number of teams being desperate for pitching.

In general, choking your boss has never been considered to be a good career move, so I can't say that I'm surprised.

Yep, but that's in spite of all Gillick's veteran acquisitions. Except Lidge (so far).

The Rowand trade with the White Sox was good, since there was no possible way no how that Jim Thome was going to have a place in the Phils lineup and they didn't have much leverage. This is forgotten, given the ensuing deal that sent Gio Gonzalez back to CWS, plus Gavin Floyd, in exchange for one year of a guy whose career had already been ended by injuries.

patrick,

of COURSE eddie poo has his blankie - he is in AAA - started the year on the ML club but he hit worse then towles and he FINALLY got sent down - for some middle reliever if i remember rightly.

reinecke actually had pitched quite well his last 8 starts, but seeing as how bourn and towles aren't in line for ROY, well, you just can't say this club sux the big fat hairy one and try out some more young guys, now can you?

noooooooooooooooooooo

MUCH better to trade for some MORE ultra shtty Proven ML Veterans who haven't been any good for 4 years

sigh

i hate ed wade and tal smith

and won't NONE of this stupid SHTT stop until drayton starts getting LOUDLY booed at the Box

and that fool ed wade wants to try to sign wolf to a long term contract

Am I the only one who gets Shawn Chacon and Jason Jennings confused?

Posted on another forum (not by me, unfortunately) in answer to the question, "What else should Wade and Smith do before the deadline?"

Take note of Von Staufenberg's failure and move the briefcase a little closer to Drayton at the next executive meeting.

I think Wade just saw how well the acquisition of Matt Morris went for Dave Littlefield and thought, I gotta get me some of that sweet sweet action.

Ryan, the short answer is "yes." But that performance has little relation to Gillick's "guidance." For the long version of what Crispix says well in #15, see here.
