Yankees and Brian McCann Agree To Deal

Brian McCann will be introduced by the Yankees at a news conference Thursday now that the catcher has passed his physical and his five-year, $85 million deal has been made official. The deal also contains a vesting option for the 2019 season.

McCann is a lefty and can hit. He had more than twice as many homers (20) in 102 games last year as Yankee catchers hit all year (8).

Are we kidding?

He'll probably hit 30 HR playing half his games at Yankee Stadium. They still should have kept Martin for half the money.

Wake me up when the Yankees trade for Giancarlo Stanton.

Yankees 2014 contract obligations in cap dollars (AAV of contract):

CC Sabathia $24.4 mill
Mark Teixeira $22.5 mill
Jacoby Ellsbury $21.9 mill
Brian McCann $17 mill
Derek Jeter $12 mill
Ichiro Suzuki $6.5 mill
Alfonso Soriano $4 mill
Brendan Ryan $2.5 mill
Vernon Wells $0 (Yanks will pay $2.4 mill, but for the purposes of the cap, Wells does not count).

Wild card
A-Rod $25 mill

Arb estimates
David Robertson $6.5 mill
Brett Gardner $5.7 mill
Ivan Nova $2.5 mill
Shawn Kelley $1.8 mill

11 other players at min. = $4.4 mill

=$156.7 mill

Because of pension obligations and bonuses, the number to beat to stay under the cap is around $180 million.

So the Yanks still have about $23.3 million to play with if they want to stay under the cap. $48 mill if they know A-Rod is suspended.

Well, another way to phrase that is that they have $23.3 to add 2-3 starting pitchers, a 2nd baseman, bullpen help, and (presumably) a starting caliber outfielder. That doesn't really seem like very much money.

They have Ellsbury, Soriano, Gardner, Ichiro and Wells. Why would they sign another outfielder?

When is the A-Rod verdict expected?

January.

I was actually assuming Gardner might be trade bait now, but I admit that's complete speculation. Seems like there would be a very good trade market for a center fielder of his caliber. I also can't imagine they plan to give too many at-bats to Wells or Ichiro, if at all possible.

Ask again in June when Ellsbury is on the DL, Soriano is back to his fade, and Ichiro/Wells are still Ichiro/Wells, but playing every day with Gardner in between them.
