Ah, big contracts for relievers.

Glad the Cubs resisted whatever urge they might've had.

The change from the 15 day DL to 10 days seems pretty significant and yet went by with 1/1000th the talk of the no-pitch IBB.

4 - I'd be interested to see a study on the number of days players spend on the DL. The ten day DL does seem to be getting used more often but I wonder how often players stay there for the minimum.

They've changed the DL rules before and even so that doesn't change the way the game is played on the field. The auto-IBB opens the door to other results being accomplished by managerial fiat rather than actually playing the game, like runners on 2nd to start extra innings, that most certainly do change the way the game is played.

#6 - I'd argue that the change, over the past 20 to 30 years, of functionally expanding the 25 man roster through frequent promotions / demotions to AAA and the use of the DL does change the way they play the game on the field.

Count me as a Yankee fan who wishes Derek Jeter would just go away. Forever.

[9] In all seriousness, as a non-Yankee fan, I appreciate what Jeter did in his career, the same way I can appreciate what Cal Ripken or Ken Griffey, Jr., or Paul Molitor did in theirs. I had an NYY friend tell me "As a baseball guy, you have to watch the Jeter ceremony!" No, I don't, just as I didn't make it a point to try and catch Ripken's, Griffey's or Molitor's.

Jeter was a marvelous player, but he didn't walk on the Harlem River to get there as some NYY fans -- YR & Andy excepted -- would have you think.
