Yankees’ biggest challenge isn’t going to be on field | New York Post

It’s nice seeing the words “Spring Training” appearing all over.

Expectations are much higher this year. The Yankees are opening the ballpark an hour earlier for Spring Training, so fans can watch the home team batting practice. Probably won't make a lot of money off it - a modest boost on concessions - but it should make the fan experience a little better. Might be thinking of something similar at Yankee Stadium.

I haven't been to a spring training game since the 1980s, but back then the thought of making any money off of opening gates early would have been laughed at. Very low attendance, stadiums that were - maybe - a step up from a local high school, minimal concessions, no mascots / bobbleheads / theme days. Just fun to go sit in the sun, perhaps talk with some of the retired folks who had direct memories of the pre-war era players, and, simply relax while taking in a game that didn't matter to anyone. I can't fault the teams for capitalizing on revenue opportunities in ST, but I miss the old ballpark vibe in Winter Haven.

Hell, in some places back in the early 60's if you got to a regular season game more than two hours early, the chances were that you could sneak into the game without too much trouble, since there were seldom any police patrolling outside the ballpark. Did it many times at DC Stadium (later RFK) and also for Orioles games at Memorial. Watched an entire twi-night doubleheader there once from the grassy slope next to the CF scoreboard.
