Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks to miss opening day with back injury

CLEARWATER, Fla. — New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks had a second cortisone shot for his ailing back and will not be ready for opening day.

Hicks was hurt while taking batting practice March 1.

New York manager Aaron Boone didn’t rule out Hicks returning during the second week of the season.

Depending, of course, on what’s actually in those shots….

The silver lining here is that the injury to Hicks will likely allow the Yankees to start the season with both 1st base possibilities Greg Bird and Luke Voit on the roster. Brett Gardner, who's having a good spring, slides over to CF, with Stanton playing LF instead of DHing. Bird & Voit are locked in a close battle for the starting 1st base job, with Bird at .342/.479/.658, and Voit at .294/.385/.676. Bird is the better fielder, and would be a left-handed bat in a mostly right-handed lineup, while Voit had the much better season last year. One can play 1st, and the other will DH for the first week or so of the season. Both have options left, and one is likey to be sent down (or traded) when Hicks returns.
